ok, so I'm new to touhou games, and shooter games in general. I have most of this figured out, hold shift for focused movement and all that, but I can't figure out what this meter is for. can anybody help?

o shit serious reply

It's your Faith meter. You accumulate Faith by collecting the green star powerups that enemies drop. Faith directly affects how much spellcards and blue powerups are worth. Dying makes you lose a large chunk of Faith. In MoF, you can actually have a higher score by not dying and having a decent run as opposed having a great run with a death in the middle.

I know the red ones give you more dakka, as well as make it shoot faster. The green star ones must be the best, and the blue ones... I dunno, are they lucky?

>Green Faith

They increase the Meter you're pointing at in the picture. The higher it number, the better. Minimum is 50K

>Blue Point

The Blue ones give you points directly to your score. If collected near the top of the screen, the number will be yellow and the amount added to your score will be what shows on your Faith Meter. If you collect them below that, you're see a white number and the number of points will be a fraction of what the Fatih Meter says.

>red power

The more red points you collect, the more Power you have. Power works differently in this game since it's measured from 0.00 to 5.00 (where as before it was 0-128) Once you gain 1 whole power, you get an option based on the weapon type you select. At 5, you don't get another option, though all following power items will automatically turn into small faith items, or if they drop after a spellcard they will turn into yellow bordered blue items, which are worth full points even when collected at the bottom of the screen.

>> No.341161

Also, I forgot to mention the white bar that appears under the faith meter.

that bar will decrease constantly. It will slow down as you kill (not shoot, kill) Enemies, and will fill up as you collect items. It will also freeze during boss battles, since you're most likely not able to collect items or kill enemies constantly during that time.

If you run out of the white bar, your faith will drain particularly quickly, which means less overall points. This is where timing the item collection and killing enemies comes it, and it's also why bombing at certain places is beneficial to your score even if you weren't going to die anyway.

It's really complicated, but all of the Touhou Scoring systems are complicated like that. Heck, this is probably the second most simplified version since the Windows era began.

>> No.342216

MoF (most recent) and EoSD (6, least recent Windows game) teach better habits by encouraging bombing. (Though, MoF perhaps too much.)

PCB looks and plays a bit better in my opinion (art is tough to argue, the mechanics are more straightforward), but IN is actually sometimes too forgiving (deathbombing) or reliant on abusing patterns that can't be dodged by intuition alone (see: half of Extra, even more so than the others).

They're all good; Mountain of Faith is probably the best intro overall, though I recommend leaving IN aside until you can clear one or two of the others on Normal and avoid its Easy mode as much as possible (which is, to be honest, an absolute joke even compared to the other games).

Above all? Bomb More.
