Well, as someone who just finished Tsukihime for the first time, I gotta say that it was pretty damn fun. Obviously, Nasu would go on to make much bigger things, but those things won't necessarily be better. This story, just like Kara no Kyoukai, doesn't try to be an epic tale of defending humanity, or even a single city. It's just a story of weird people and their weird issues, which makes it more relatable. It doesn't try to be about paranormal things like vampires, it uses those things to tell a story, which is an important distinction not every writer understands. It doesn't have a huge cast, but every single character matters, everyone here is believable, imperfect, and goddamn charming. It's not the longest VN ever, but it feels like every scene has a purpose, even when seemingly nothing is happening. The artwork might not be the most technically impressive thing I've seen, but I vividly remember the mannerisms and faces of every single character, and for those events which didn't have a CG artwork, my imagination painted it very well, which means the writer succeeded at what he was doing without using art as a crunch. And most importantly, it left me with things to think about, like any good story should.
Yeah, Tsukihime is a damn good novel, and it deserves its lasting legacy. Now I'm wondering how the remake would manage to update it properly.

What would it lose? You don't get Kohaku's and Hisui's backstories, but they're pretty much irrelevant to the story of Tsukihime. You also don't see red Akiha, but that's because she has no reason to go red.
The same applies to Far-Side, by the way, since Ciel and Arcueid are irrelevant to those routes. Neither side depends on the other since they don't really interact, they're simply two sides of the same coin (or moon, if you prefer).

A lot of that stuff is actually foreshadowed in Dead Ends, and there's also the mystery of what happened to Sacchin. They are pretty irrelevant in Near Side, but they are still there and a part of the story, so you can't pretend they aren't the way you can with Arc/Ciel, and IIRC Shiki's background is vague until Akiha's route. It also adds to what Roa is as a being and an essence in SHIKI's dominance over the personality and its interaction with Akiha.

With Far Side, there's the mystery of who that blonde girl was at the beginning and Akiha getting possessed not making as much sense, but much like the characters, you could know nothing about the dead apostle stuff and the drama wouldn't be much different.

Are you seriously ignoring the fact that the Far-Side is literally unavailable without first finishing the Near-Side? It's impossible to play through the second part without playing the first part. Without the first part, Roa is never even mentioned, the main heroine is completely abandoned, Ciel is also abandoned, and pretty much the entire world outside of the Tohno mansion doesn't exist.
Saying that Near-Side routes in Tsukihime are "expendable" is beyond silly. It's like saying that you only need to play through Heaven's Feel, while Fate and UBW are unnecessary. You're cutting out such a large chunk of the world that you might as well not read Tsukihime at all.
Without Far-Side, Tsukihime would still be Tsukihime - a story about a boy with a strange ability who meets a strange vampire princess under strange circumstances, and they embark on a strange journey together. Just like FSN would still be FSN without Heaven's Feel, but not the other way around. That doesn't mean that Far-Side routes are bad, or inferior - they're just telling a different story, the one not related to the *main story* of the game.

First of all, she was practically proto-Rin, but she became a victim of the worst writing Nasu did in Tsukihime - he turned her into an exposition dispenser. Rin was the same, explaining to you how the world works whenever necessary, but it was paced way better and didn't feel like Rin-sensei was constantly calling you for afterschool teatime with a lecture about Holy Grails. With rewrites and added screentime, Ciel would have more time to show the player who she actually is as a character.
Second, her past is fascinating and we don't get nearly enough of it. Ciel is by far the most tortured character in Tsukihime. She was forced to slaughter her entire family and village by Roa, abandoned by him with memories of her actions still intact, then taken by the Church, where she was constantly brutalized in the most imaginable ways for fuck knows how long, never had anyone to fall back on, and when you meet her, the only wish she has is to fucking die. Considering how much time Shiki spends lamenting Kohaku's past, it's ridiculous that his reaction to Ciel's backstory goes about as deep as "well, she had a rough time", and when Arc literally rips Ciel's intestines out in front of him, my dude gets mad, but not too mad. I guess it's common sense - when someone performs Kano's fatality on your waifu, you gotta keep your cool.
It's kind of obvious that Nasu could not muster enough emotion to write Ciel's route similar to other girls. And I'm sure he realizes that, so I'm interested to see what happens to her in TsukiR.

I'm in the middle of playing through Tsukihime, I completed a couple routes, and suddenly my audio broke. I unzipped the OP zip file and ran it, and it worked fine, so I went to the original's save files and copied them over to the new Tsukihime version and the audio broke again.
I tried a third time but left out envdata, gloval.sav and NScrflog.dat, keeping only the story progression saves and the sound was fine.

Tsuki was a work he poured his soul into, but the development was plagued by problems of both people involved. Nasu in particular had to write it while surviving off Takeuchi's emergency rations because he had to leave his real job if the novel was to be ever finished. So it was quite a miracle that Tsukihime actually saw the light of day, and was such a monumental success. After reflecting on something made in such conditions, a writer like him would surely have an entire heap of things that he would tweak, add, or remove to make a better story, with all the newfound experience, time, and resources.
