I'm a British guy who lives and works in Japan (I've been here since 2010) and I have a couple of kids who are now at school. When I first started learning Japanese I used to spend a lot of time in the online Japanese learning community and coming out of that a decade later I thought it would be worth addressing something I see often online that I find pretty misleading.

This is basically the idea that we should largely dismiss the way Japanese schoolkids learn Japanese and focus on methods tailored to foreigners (particularly English speakers) which are claimed to either be more efficient or just better suited to the demands that foreigners face when trying to learn the language. It's a claim you'll see a lot, sometimes implicit and other times explicit - it's a widely held belief that things like Anki and RTK are "hyper efficient" and superior to traditional methods.

I expect this will annoy a lot of people so let me just say upfront, I already know what the counter-argument is. I've been reading this sub for years and I know that many people instinctively believe that foreigners shouldn't learn Japanese the way Japanese schoolkids learn, that the "Japanese way" is far too slow for what foreigners need, that things like Anki/RTK are incredibly smart and that if you don't make rapid progress with them it's because you're not using them correctly. I know the standard arguments.

However, having lived in Japan I've come to appreciate the problems with this idea. I noticed this first when, after years of using all of the things people recommend online, I started using books for Japanese schoolkids. If you don't know, Japanese kids basically have a Japanese class (Kokugo / 国語) and they learn a limited number of kanji in each year at school - e.g. they learn 1,026 kanji in the first six years of school known as the Kyōiku kanji (教育漢字). The way they learn these kanji is not, as many people seem to believe in the West, by mindlessly writing them out over and over again thousands of times until they remember them, but actually by writing them out a few times and then seeing them in the context of sentences. A typical exercise book, for instance, will show you how to write a kanji, give you a few words that use that kanji and then give you some exercises where you'll see words using the kanji in a sentence and have to fill in the reading or write the kanji to complete it. Right now the most popular books like this with my kids are those in the すみっコぐらし学習ドリル series. There are other books for older kids.

That's just one example, but using books like this was really the way I finally started to make some progress with Japanese and it made me appreciate that our western methods are actually quite primitive in comparison. Specifically, a lot of people think they're doing something incredibly clever with Anki, WaniKani and so on but what you're actually doing is living in a gameified bubble. If you take kanji, for example, the real process you need to master is not how to select the correct response in a flashcard drill about what a particular kanji means, but to use kanji actively - read sentences, write them in your own sentence, etc. The Japanese education system is set up in a logical fashion, built on years of evidence and experience, which gets kids to do this and it works. You can access native learning material by buying books on Amazon's Japan site, but there are also a lot of websites out there that simply allow you to download and print off exercises for free.

Most of the arguments that people make in favour of the western methods are fairly misleading in comparison. First, people claim that the Japanese method is too slow because we don't have the same amount of time as Japanese school kids have. This is illogical because Japanese kids aren't just learning kanji or Japanese, they need that amount of time to learn everything else (mathematics, science, etc.) It doesn't take an adult six years to do an entire 教育漢字 course. This argument also comes from the fairly naive idea that it won't in fact take you 5-10 years to get good at Japanese because our methods are so clever we can all make rapid progress. The reality is you're likely going to be learning Japanese for the rest of your life and still fall short of perfection so the appeal of firing through RTK in six months and "mastering kanji" is a bit misguided at the best of times. I've had several discussions with teachers here about RTK and while they are fine with mnemonics (there are many Japanese books on kanji that use mnemonics - it isn't a new idea) they find it completely laughable that we should be trying to teach a beginner the entire 常用漢字 when they're otherwise at the level of a Japanese toddler.

Second, the idea that the western methods are smarter isn't grounded in evidence - nobody has ever done a study on the actual efficiency of RTK, for instance, which, incidentally, was created in the 1970s by a guy who didn't speak Japanese with the aim of learning how to quickly write kanji to an English keyword (I say this because many people online seem to think it's an evidence based system for efficiently teaching people how to read Japanese written by a linguistics Professor - in reality Heisig has boasted he didn't even know the Japanese word for "dog" when he created it and that he just came up with it to prove a point to his tutors). Third, the idea that native methods are unsuited to foreigners is extremely limited in practice - it might be a decent argument against a pure immersion approach of the kind that babies use to acquire a language given the changes that occur in the human brain, but that's it.

But above all, once you strip away the fact that the online learning community seems to be ignoring copious amounts of useful material for rather dubious reasons, the thing that probably annoys me most about this line of thinking is just the sheer deluded arrogance of it. The success rate of English speakers learning Japanese is absolutely tiny. I don't know a single person here that is at a high level and credits things like Anki or RTK with reaching fluency. Most of those I know who are at a high level have used native material at classes or via self-study. There's this odd idea that the Japanese education system is backwards and full of people who aren't as smart as us and have never heard of our incredibly sophisticated methods. It's utterly baseless and someone really needs to say it.

TL;DR - Western methods for learning Japanese are about half as smart as we think they are, the Japanese education system is substantially better at teaching people how to read Japanese than most people recognize, don't live in a gameified bubble and don't be afraid to expose yourself to native methods/material.

it's the 2ch top 30 anime chart but with markings to show the shows which have jp subs available and what format the subs are, whether they are incomplete, etc.

i've also written a text version with more details (e.g. for partially available subs, which episodes are covered), but i wanna add some explanation stuff to it before i share it so i'll post that later
