I`ve been studying Japanese for a little under four years. I studied kanji with rtk and created my own Anki deck for vocabulary, so while my reading ability is high enough to read light novels fairly well, my listening ability is god awful when I actually talk to native speakers. I have been teaching English in Japan now for about 4 months, and I still feel I cannot understand a large percent of what people say to me. I feel like I can understand when people talk directly too me about fairly simple things or ask my basic questions, but when it comes to more casual conversation, I get completely lost.

I dont listen Japanese at home very much anymore because I like listening to things I can relate too after being around teachers who speak now English the majority of the day. I used to think I would be one of the super hardcore AJATTers who comes to Japanese and makes no English speaking friends, but instead it seems like the opposite is true, except that because I live in a tiny village, I cant make very many English speaking friends, leaving my only option internet videos. I know this probably comes off as really whiny, but I would appreciate the perspective of anyone who has drastically improved their Japanese listening skills and you found to be the most effective. Thanks in advance.

I'm using the core 3K deck with Anki. Is it possible to have the sentences show before the answer for the word? Some cards will show the sentence with the kanji, usually if it happens to be a different reading of the kanji. I'd like to do that with each card. I've attached an example of what I'm talking about, you can manually edit each card to add the sentence before the answer, but doing that each time is annoying.

Hmm...not to be bold, but I don't think this has happened to me yet, usually I can get a word down if I happen to see it over _outside_ of Anki. What's difficult is remembering all the readings for something like the kanji 行 or 生 (those are easy since they appear so frequently, I'm just going off the top of my head). I thought having sentences in that case would make it easier, since I'd hear the different readings each time when learning the card, and have the sentence to remember the context.

Until you start studying kanji, you'll have to memorize foreign sounds

After you study enough kanji (I would say over 1000), you'll memorize meanings that translate in your native language

So you'll be in a position where you almost instantly understand a new term at first sight, regardless if you know how to say it. So with kanji you'll acquire vocabulary faster than just memorizing foreign sounds

You need to learn vocabulary and especially grammar, but just don't put off studying kanji for too long
