Hello /jp/, can we have a vocaloid thread?

I've been trying to make some music using vocaloid, but I've found very little in the way of english-language tutorials and learning resources. Most of what google brings up is extremely old tutorials for previous versions of vocaloid, or lame fansites and forums.

Probably asking the impossible here, but is there a particular trick or technique to get a really natural, human-like sound out of the software? Yuukiss seems to have mastered it with his "vocannaindesu" video http://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm3472911 but I can't make head nor tail of what he's doing given that I can't read japanese. Anyone feel like offering some pointers?

I'll be very surprised if you get any real help.

Me too but the fact that someone was able to produce /jp/'s themesong using vocaloid gives me at least some hope

To make a vocaloid sound more human like you have to play with the pitch, volume and voice vibrato, the trick is having the voice vibrato play nice with the next syllable, 60% to 80% is a good start.

Read some of the tips in this site:

Is it possible to record your own voice and turn it into Miku's?

Use UTAUloid software. I dunno how, but you can with it. Then you can hear your ugly off key robo-voice alongside Miku's if you can compose with it.

VocaLis is apparently in alpha testing right now.

You can find videos of people who've been allowed to test it on nicodou, sounds pretty good.

One of these days it should be out for the rest of us to use, but until then you have to edit all those parameters by hand

So here's a little song I covered with Luka

Can anyone give me some tips on making it sound less shitty and jilted?

>> No.3391803

>>3391687
When in doubt, add sound effects. Echo works. Or make raise the music volume to drown out the voice.

I didn't click on your link, by the way.

>> No.3391822

There's a software called Mikuvoice or something like that. If you use it to open a soundfile it'll show you the pitch and vibrato of the voices in it. It's what people use to make vocaloid covers.

Well here's another of my attempts with luka, this time a simple song in Japanese. Tips & advice to make it sound good would be appreciated

That's where the mixing comes in. You got the composing part down just fine. Maybe some EQing for Luka and some delay or reverb? Here's a general idea for what each frequency range does in a handy chart (but of course it isn't the law as everyone's mix is different):

http://www.recordingwebsite.com/articles/eqprimer.php

And it's been a while since I've heard that song! I think you did a decent job with Vocaloid itself. Since you got guitar/drums, then maybe some compression (on everything) could help too. Just get some ideas from the original song (in terms of mixing).

Guitar sounds nicely played and needs another channel as well. Not sure how heavy you want it to be, but you can't do wrong with one rhythm guitar track panned hard left and another panned hard right (with one track being EQed differently and very slightly delayed). Really heavy metal songs have even more rhythm guitar layers (usually 4).

Thanks for the help. What DAW would you recommend? I'm currently using audacity but it seems a little limited with regards to mixing stuff. It's probably just that I suck with it though

And yeah, there's already 2 guitar tracks on top of each other. I'll try panning and delaying them next time.

Yeah I already knew that, that's why I'm looking for advice from people who can make less shitty vocaloid tracks than mine

The voice sounds pretty out of tune, especially in the lower registers. Fixing that first will probably make it sound a good deal better.

Any idea what parameters need to be changed? The actual notes are right - I just lowered it an octave from the pitch Paul sings at, but you're right that it sounds out of tune
