I went to a language school in Japan. We used Minna no Nihongo, 中級へ行こう、TRY! series (starting from N3), and the 中級から学ぼう series. During breaks from school like spring or summer break they gave us photocopies from the sou matome books for practice exercises.

I have learned much more from immersion/referencing in DoJG and random Japanese grammar blogs than I ever learned in language school. Seriously don't waste your time or money on textbooks or classes, just read and do fun stuff in Japanese.

You can learn grammar without a textbook. There are lots of very good grammar blogs online.

You might say that Japanese is a high context language, but academic Japanese is often extremely detailed and specific in a manner that actually needs pairing back for conversion to natural academic English.

iKnow made the original core deck. it's good but not perfect.

qm made some improvements on it and called it core3k. better but not perfect.

I made some improvements on that and called it core 2.3k. it's better but still not perfect and I have documented future improvements.

it's an incremental improvement sort of thing, not really so much of a "choice paralysis" situation.

Different decks have a different number of words. Some have 2000 words, some have 6000 words. The decks are usually made by different people and thus have individual differences. Some might have images, some might have pitch accent data, etc. Some decks might be directly exported through a script, some are made manually. Some decks have lots of mistakes. Each deck is a little bit different. That being said, fuck premade decks.

This graph can be very encouraging because you can recognize 85% of words in media just by learning 2000 of them. However, don’t get discouraged by the second half of the graph. Yes, going from 90% to 95% means doubling the amount of words you know from ~3000 to ~6000. That 5% gain might not seem huge… but it is HUGE! At 90% you’ll look up every 1 in 10 words, at 95% you’ll look up every 1 in 20 words. That’s doubling the amount of words you can read without looking anything up!

Honestly I don't know why I'm wishing you luck. Luck is not a factor at all - If you want to marry a Japanese girl and start a family you absolutely can. The only thing preventing you is maybe geographical location, and if you take a look at Japanese immigration laws you would know that luck is not a factor for moving to Japan (Unlike America which requires you to literally win a lottery). Why I’m quitting WaniKani

When I started I really loved the system however over time it has become counterproductive. These are a few reasons I’ve decided to quit.

- many of the kanji I’ve learned or studied are useless. I live in Japan and have shown the kanji I’m studying to my wife, coworkers, and friends (all Japanese). Several people didn’t know the kanji in the lists or don’t use them.
- the kanji lists aren’t organized by stroke order, frequency of use, or JLPT tests.
- the enormous amount of time it takes to study the kanji has become detrimental. I could be studying the grammar or speaking or listening or literally anything else.
- the last one is on me. I don’t really enjoy it anymore. Honestly, I don’t really “get it” when it comes to Japanese. It’s never clicked for me.

In fact, I only live in Japan because of my family and have no particular interest in the language. This app has made me frustrated and annoyed and made me enjoy learning Japanese far less.

After over two years I’ve only ever managed to get up to level 16 or 17 and had to reset several times due to the overwhelming number of kanji in my study queue.
