My most recent idea is the question of Mokou's experiences before coming to Gensokyo--the 1200 or so years in which she canonically wandered the Earth. I can imagine there's got to be something interesting one can write about that... maybe a bit of historical fiction.

I've been writing for thirteen years. Yeah, since I was twenty. I can't draw worth shit, though.

It really makes me cringe when someone posts any kind of writing and someone on /jp/ goes "Oh, sounds good, I liked how you X" when it actually fucking SUCKS. Godamn. I've read novels, short stories and professional work before and I know what sounds good and what's steaming pile of shit. Reading over certain plot synopses in the /jp/ project forums are simply unbearable. KS had a good initial impact in how it broadened interest, but too many people seem afraid of taking on a legitimate project. Joke ideas and adaptations are fine, but who really cares? Writers who are unafraid to start a project on scale with a Nasu or Ryukishi07 work are the only ones that can hope to give English VN production any credibility.

It's up to you writers of /jp/. Create while the potential is there and make it something worth creating.

I followed all of the OC threads on /jp/ that I saw. I don't do anything myself and don't find most of the art interesting, but it was nice to see people actually fucking DOING something. Some people, I don't know how many and it honestly doesn't matter since they're the 'loudest', completely disagree and will troll any such thread as soon as they see it. I'm not about to talk about such trolling being disheartening or anything (suck it up. That is all) but it's certainly annoying as fuck and hinders productivity. Then there's the whole anon vs attention whoring thing, where people can't decide if they should work in an anonymous fashion to avoid attention whoring or use names and a forum because it's a lot easier to keep track of shit when you have someone's name and a more permanent form of communication than an imageboard thread that lasts 12 hours.

Feasible, but the major problem is that there isn't a demand for English production of those types of media. Fanart doesn't need to be translated and since doujins are not major translation projects translation are not exceedingly rare. Sage anon has pretty much captured the argument to western fanfiction... the way it's done here has it's own set of problems.

The problem comes when you write something bad, insist it's good (whether or not you believe it yourself; although actually believing a piece of shit is good is significantly worse), and demanding attention for it.

I have the occasional piece in the Globe & Mail (lol milk bags), but I still write fanfiction in a fairly constant stream.

At least for me, the main problem with being a writefag is that I work well with structure, but I don't trust anyone enough to provide that. Whenever I try something noticeably longer than, say, 5-10k words, I inevitably get bogged down in organizing the storyboard and the text, fooling with the coding, being ronery about working alone, etc. That's not a job that a random can fill.

Maybe this is unique for me, but having a real editor works wonders in getting shit done, and it's a tough job.

I like seeing people post their fiction, their art, and their music. Also you writebros need to stop being so scared and start letting people read at what you write. That's the only way you're going to get better.

Here's the way I found to deal with that.

1. Get an idea in your head that will make for a relatively complete short story, or at least a very solid start. In other words, you should have the full concept in your head before starting. Example in this case: "Mokou and Kaguya forget why they are fighting each other, hilarity ensues."

2. Sit down, write as fast as possible, get enough pages done that you actually have a large fraction of the story done. Finish enough of it that you can tell yourself later that it's "almost done."

3. Think more about the story over the next day or two.

4. Wrap it up, post on /jp/ even if it's shit.

Basically you have to get far enough along in a short enough time that you can no longer convince yourself to give up.

I agree with this approach; I used it for a CYOA I was writing a while back (lasted ~25 pages before I got bored...). IMO there should be at least 1 or 2 full pages between most decision points, at a minimum--more like a visual novel, really.

From my experience, don't try to learn drawing with a tablet if you don't own at least an Intuos or Cintiq with decent size. Just draw on paper, scan and use your tablet to color and add effects.

Sometimes I write up stuff to mess with /jp/ and I really appreciate whenever writefags take a few minutes to dredge out some quality OC for us, even if it isn't very funny. A well-thought-out thread is like an oasis in a desert of japanese birds, dawsons, and one-liner troll posts.

Dear writefags and KS devs:

1. Stop trying to be Japanese. Don't use Japanese settings, terms, honorifics, etc. if you don't know how to use them. Watching subbed anime doesn't count as knowing how to use them. Setting your story in Japanese Anime High School will only make your story look like weeaboo bullshit.

2. Playing Tsukihime and FSN does not make you an expert VN writer. Stop trying to be Nasu (with pseudo-deep babbling and meaningless repetition of words) because you can't pull it off.

3. Writing a VN doesn't mean you should take every weeaboo thing you know and make some shitty recycled story out of it. I believe that you can make an original VN that only borrows a little bit from things you've read. I'm not really against the generic Japanese high school setting, it's just that you won't be able to pull it off. I wouldn't expect a Japanese person to pull off a believable suburban American high school even if they try to copy the Disney channel.
