But it has been stated by multiple people in the industry that steam makes up the vast majority of sales for games that are on multiple storefronts, so it's very much worth trying to put your game on there for the chance that it might get approved.

With the Steam ban, I'm curious what the numbers end up looking like for Evenicle 2, since the series has name recognition thanks to the extremely successful Steam release of the original and they managed to get (and still have) the demo for 2 on Steam to let people on the platform know it is upcoming.

We can't even remotely discuss numbers until we found out what storefront it'll be on, if there will be mosaics, and if there will be any cut content. Then there's also the potential issues with the translation which can absolutely cost sales. I can safely say that Evenicle 2 will not turn a profit for alicesoft simply because of how much they spent on rushing through it. Hiring 3 translators and multiple editors is fucking expensive and comes with its own set of problems.

My initial predictions ASSUMING it got on steam put it at best at 35% the sales of the first Evenicle based on current market trends, though more realistically it was about 15%-20%. Without steam and with them keeping mosaics and selling it on an obscure storefront I expect sales between 5%-10% of what Evenicle did. This might sound like i'm crazy lowballing it but Evenicle on steam sold an obscene amount of copies, this isn't even taking into account the number of sales on MG's official storefront either. The steam sales numbers were leaked for Evenicle when Arunaru bailed on MG. I believe he said that at the time it sold about 15,000 copies on steam whereas most Alicesoft titles only sell about 1000-1500 copies.

>> No.33787730

>whereas most Alicesoft titles only sell about 1000-1500 copies.
1000-1500 copies on Mangagamers storefront* Which is why Alicesoft decided to cut out MG for the release of Evenicle 2 and do it themselves, since Alicesoft probably only saw 10% of that in royalties.

This is just speculation on my part but I feel this will have big consequences on Alicesoft in the future. If the Evenicle 2 sale numbers are a massive dissapointment we might see them follow the Lilith route of going all in on gacha. Rather than translate their VN's they might choose to only release their gacha in the west.

>> No.33794578

>>33794377
I don't think that will be the case specifically in regards to Evenicle 2 given that Alicesoft themselves very clearly acknowledge that they've massively changed up how the title was handled compared to Evenicle 1 with the retention of mosaics, unmentioned censoring of their demo release, and completely different publisher. They've most certainly realized that they've massively shot themselves in the foot with Evenicle 2, if only because of Steam telling them to fuck off and now they have no storefront they can release it on because they themselves told MG to fuck off like steam just did to them.

That is assuming that it was a decision that MG held animosity towards. Honestly I don't know if it was ever like that, if I was in MG's position I don't even know if I'd want to pick up Evenicle 2, what with their backlog of Alicesoft and the departure of one of their main translators. To be honest I thought of it as a 'best of both worlds' scenario, where MG can get more work done on Rance and Alicesoft can get us Evenicle 2 in the mean time, but what a catastrophe it turned out to be.

Either way, though, MG comes out looking good regardless. I mean, sure, Arunaru shat out questionable translation decisions left and right, but we always got the games without cut content and usually with a lot of engine improvements because MG hire some dedicated programmers for the Alicesoft titles.

It would be funny if, in the end, Alicesoft has to publish it on MG's store. I mean, where else is it going to go? JAST, maybe? I dunno.

You realize they made over $600,000 on Evenicle right? What kind of company wouldn't want to pick up the sequel to an insanely profitable title. That's like saying Sekai Project wouldn't want to publish Nekopara 2 or 3. That's absolute lunacy.

What I mean is picking it up so early. If I was in MG's position, I would have waited or another year or two before approaching Alicesoft for licensing. Maybe that's why Alicesoft went and did their own thing. Maybe they were just inpatient.

>> No.33795904

Honestly, despite how everyone seems to picture some animosity between the two companies, I feel like an adult version of Evenicle 2 would have ended up on the MG store eventually, either via patch or complete version.

Although seeing how being rejected by Steam meant a delay in the release date, they were obviously weren't ready for an uncut version at all. I can't see them releasing a built to Steam unless it was basically near the end so they probably cut more stuff out if it's that bad a delay.

Another reason could be that that initial goal is the base amount they want to make purchasing and shipping physical goods worth the effort and time in the first place.

I've noticed that in games that have a primary focus on the heroine, I tend to lose interest once they lose their virginity. I think that to me the appeal of a heroine is innately tied to their virginity, and once it's gone I lose motivation to continue. I've tried thinking of counterexamples from my experience, but they fit the rule. For example one of my favorite VNs is Clannad, but once you get to the point at which Tomoya and Nagisa have sex (which is quite late, about halfway through After Story maybe?) the primary focus of the story has shifted from Nagisa to Tomoya, so it didn't cause a problem for me. Or in a "plotge" there is something else that is the main concern, so my interest can be maintained. But for moege and things of that sort I find routes almost impossible to finish. Even if I'm enjoying it, once the H-scenes start I burn out almost immediately and drop it.

It's probably more that when the sole goal of the game is to "get" the girl, once that's done (and usually you get your first lewds one minute afterwards), there's no goal left. And there's nothing worse for motivation than having nothing to look forward to, especially when the writing is generally meh.

The number 1 problem of cation games for example. Got the girl? Here, have a bunch of not connected boring and random slice of life scenes with random ero here and there. No goal, no structure, no anything.

The reason you don't have that issue otherwise is exactly that. Those works still have goals and reasons to stay. They have more of a structure. Shitty moege fall into the trap of no more motivation a lot. Some don't, but that's not too common.

I agree that in moege it's a serious problem, though I don't really think that it's so much a virginity thing, but rather that the "thrill of the hunt" is usually all the game has going for it aside from, well, moe. Once the girl has been conquered, the girl game no longer has much to offer. I mean, it's quite normal for moege to plateau in terms of enjoyability once the initial hump of interesting relationship development is over, as that's all they're usually capable of. Afterwards the drama usually becomes more melodramatic, or they come up with some nonsensical plot development that is just stupid, or... they don't really do anything at all (Snoreworks). It doesn't really help that the protagonists of these titles are usually wet blankets that don't offer much in the way of actual chemistry or character depth, so their interactions post and pre coitus are usually pretty weak.

It might not be a moege, but I still feel like Damekoi was a far better girl game than most. The relationships were actually interesting to read for me, even though they were rife with the kind of melodrama that would usually piss me off. I think it's because the protagonist and heroines were much stronger characters than usual. There was actually something going on there. Though I know some people here really disliked Damekoi so I'm probably in the minority on that.
>>33835557
For me, virginity isn't really as important so long as they don't make it a weird issue. The Heaven's Feel route was struck me as weird, because Nasu really harps on about Sakura's lack of virginity quite a bit in the story. I don't remember him focusing on it nearly as much during Kohaku's route, and it was a lot less irritating because of it. The difference between Sakura and Kohaku is that in Kohaku's route you don't get a whole lot of detail about what happened to Kohaku. You get enough that you understand it, but the game doesn't dwell on it. It's more about the psychological effect that it had on her. But in Sakura's route it's constantly shoving in your face what happened to Sakura. You're constantly getting more details thrown at you, even up to near the end of the game. It felt like Nasu was trying to work through some kind of personal emotional complex rather than write something meaningful. Like the thing that bothers him about it is the sexual details so he wanted to make those as extreme as possible, far beyond the scope of reality (the thing with Kohaku was something that could have been real, barring the supernatural justification), so that he could try and cope with it by making her still be "pure" at the end.
