Who's Reimu then in Grimsokyo? Is she supposed to be the one enforcer in the land who keeps things in order? What's her role in all this? She clearly cares about the wellbeing of Gensokyo. She solves incidents, she creates the Hakurei barrier to prevent anyone from coming in and she created the spell card system so Youkai and humans could fight danmaku duels rather than kill each other using their full power. Is she supposed to be the benevolent caring "good guy" in this story, or is she just an asshole who murders Youkai indiscrimanently and doesn't give a shit if humans die or not?

I mean, it’s not like he keeps his politics secret. AFiEU was practically a pro-immigration manifesto, and the entire character of Miko is a satirical/blasphemous interpretation of one of the “Founding Fathers” of Japan, who is so highly revered that he’s literally a god. That… doesn’t strike me as a conservative attitude. It’s like making George Washington an Islamic Alchemist: American conservatives would burst an artery at the thought of that. He made his version of Hell literally just unchecked capitalism, a supposed “meritocracy” where people born with advantages simply trample over the weak and there’s very little social mobility no matter how much effort you put in. The Heavenly gods that imperial authority in Japan has historically been derived from are portrayed as assholes.

Also Touhou is fundamentally feminist in that it posits a world where women can hold any position in society, have any kind of personality or hobbies, don’t need to define themselves in terms of the men in their lives, and that’s so normal that it’s not even worth commenting on.

And in his interviews, he’s even more blunt. Okina was inspired by his disgust at the discrimination he saw towards disabled people. He talks about how it doesn’t make any sense that alcohol is legal while marijuana isn’t. This is a little harder to cite, but I’ve heard that on his radio show he once interrupted his co-hosts to chastise them for making a homophobic joke.

Now, I’m fully expecting someone to chime in that “you’re just imposing your American values on him! Conservatism in Japan means something completely different!” And true, I’m not an expert on Japanese politics, although I’ve heard some horror stories about Abe. But if Japanese conservatism happens to embrace immigration, feminism, gay people, discriminated people, social safety nets, ending the war on drugs, and diversity in all its forms, then I’d be happy to call myself a Japanese conservative. Incidents tend to be pretty serious. Complete them and suddenly you're having a tea party with the final boss. That's kind of a consistent rule throughout Touhou, harmony.

She seems to not fit in too well with either the human village or youkai. She does often fire at youkai indiscriminately and her allegiance is 'generally' towards the village. She's welcome there and they treat her as an authority, but she doesn't seem to be familiar with many people.

But most of her 'friends' are youkai, or at least she socializes with them far more than with any human besides Marisa. Since she lives outside of the village she has a similar understanding of Gensokyo as youkai and can more easily socialize with them.

She'll protect the village form anything but if a person gets attacked outside of it then she'll likely not do anything about it.

Her primary duty is 'balance' and ensuring the status quo never gets shaken up. Considering the human village is basically a cultfarm for use by what are more or less demonic entities, and she knows people occasionally get spirited away into Gensokyo and eaten, you could easily take the perspective she's more harmful to humans than good despite being their protector.

All of the above seems to go for Marisa as well.

In Touhou nothing is really serious, except when it comes to things realted to Yukari and the Lunarians. Those tend to be pretty serious.
