Greetings anons, it is me, iceberg anon. As you can see, I'm still working on this massive clusterfuck of an image. The reason I haven't been posting much is because Ryukishi's wild ride that is GOU won't fucking end and has thrown a wrench into everything.
Also, this version of the iceberg hasn't been edited to account for all the new information presented by Gou. I've just kinda been tossing in entries willy nilly since I'm waiting for the anime to end so I can reorganize everything without it all falling apart when a new episode airs. That is why it is in a rather shitty state currently.
And yes, I know it is getting a little bit crowded, so I'm most likely going to have to make a completely new chart, or overhaul the entire way this iceberg is organized. Maybe something more in line with the design of the original conspiracy iceberg.

I would start by saying that I never had much sympathy for Satoko or Rika in the original. I had empathy for Satoko while reading tatarigoroshi and didn't think she was as fucked up a character as when watching Deen's anime adaptation. Gou just drained her entire character and made her into a cartoonish villain. In Gou she finally has an arc focusing on her and isn't just her suffering mostly off camera for the other actual main characters to worry about, basically if this were a VN she'd be the narrator now.

Keep in mind please that the beginning of the visual novel comes at a time when Rika has already gone through a lot of fragments and it seems like Hanyuu noted that she was putting more effort into changing things in the beginning, which is why she was so quick to throw up her hands in chapters whose events we know. In addition, in episode 22 Eua explicitly says that endless loops change the mind, affect the psyche and with each time the looper has less and less strength to resist fate, and looper literally starts to reject attempts to change something almost immediately, that is, if something even minimally goes wrong. It’s hard for me to view Satoko (and to a lesser extent Rika to) in Gou as the same characters from the original. They share the same name and look but to me they’re just different characters. I guess it’s just a product of how R07 views the WTC franchise post Higurashi. I think he’s applying the Umineko mindset to Higurashi, where Higurashi is like a sandbox where characters can act in any way they want and it’s okay because it’s just another fragment. Or maybe he just doesn’t put much thought into it at all and really wanted to write yuri Rika x Satoko for some reason

I'm calling her a plot device because the arcs that are supposed to be about her are mostly focused on the other characters dealing with her situation instead, all she's reduced to in them is a macguffin, something that needs to be saved, we're told that her mental illness makes her think tolerating Teppei will make Satoshi appear out of thin air, and because we don't see her own perception or thoughts or conclusions, that's literally all we get about her character in this situation. This post just tells me that you didn't like how things turned out and nothing else, you're basing your claims on emotions, hence dumb statements like "she's a plot device NOW" as an insult even though she's the opposite of that, an actual main character the story focuses on with her own thoughts, decisions and actions rather than something that the other characters strive to save. The story is also not baseless, we knew Matsuribayashi was a flawed ending because there were things left that weren't dealt with, we knew Minagoroshi and all its lessons were forgotten in it, hence Rika and Satoko committing the very specific mistakes in Gou that said arc had addressed which makes it clear that it was deliberate. Namely, Rika's being complacent and isn't being assertive like her friends had taught her while Satoko is being prideful and irrational all because of her severe attachment issues, the same mentality that made her tolerate Teppei instead of asking her friends (which was never dealt with in Matsuribayashi) and several misunderstandings (and misunderstandings are always what every Higurashi arc was based on). We've discussed this and pointed this out several times throughout the threads, where have you been?

Sure, I get that Satoko didn't really have as big of a role in the VN as, say, Rena or Mion, and I could get behind giving her a story of her own to resolve her issues, but I'm always going to be at least a little bitter over Gou turning her into an insane psychopath serial killer.

I think their characterization is plausible if you look at broad strokes and overall picture, but a lot of character development was not shown on screen and the details feel off. Details, especially how their conflict of interest was played out. Passione spent a lot of airtime dwelling on that conflict but didn't really go anywhere with it.

And then Satoko's transformation from normal JK to looper granny was way too rushed. Actually, not rushed. It was completely skipped. 100 years acknowledged with nothing but one meme face. They should have spend at the very least half an episode showing her spectating various fragments, how that affected her emotionally and drove her to her conclusion to heartbreak Rika.

I think some of the changes are just things he thought about after finishing Higurashi and is retroactively adding to the characters even though it wasn't in the original text, which is why they're kind of odd. The idea of Rika growing to dislike the place she was imprisoned and wanting to move on from it to something completely different makes sense logically, but it was never in the original text in spite of his endless monologues.

As far as Satoko goes, although I don't think her character is handled badly, it does feel like writing where reaching a goal was the primary motivation. I don't see what is so different about them. Satoko's whole character in Gou is that she wants to remain the same Satoko as in the original, playing games in the club, doing traps, living with Rika and so on. Except the world conspires against her, so the club stops allowing cheating and then ends, her traps hurt people, she leaves the village, Rika abandons her and so on. So if you're mad that Satoko isn't the same character, realize that Satoko is too. Now Rika in St. Lucia isn't that different from her Bernkastel personality, except she is being all deep and talking about fate and dice and doing her poems out in the open with people praising her for it instead of calling her a nerd and bullying her like they should. Plus we never saw what Rika was like after escaping the loops, but as soon as she got back she became the same incompetent defeatist who only does the bare minimum as always, so nothing changed there.

Rena isn't the narrator of Watanagashi, Tatarigoroshi or Meakashi yet at no point does she feel like a plot device, we see a lot about her as a character. Mion doesn't even have an arc of her own and she still feels like more of a character than Satoko just because we're always seeing so much of her.

That's precisely why she should have asked for helped, she knew she was being targeted by someone, she knew she had already died for so long, so why not try asking people for help? These are the same people who were willing to become accomplices to Rena's crime and help her hide the bodies, she knew they were THAT close. Telling them that she feared someone was out to get her isn't as unreasonable as Rena's claims about alien clones you know, especially since Rena's friends knew she was mentally perturbed beforehand and like you said, Mion had a perfect explanation for her claims, something that didn't happen with Rika's. Remember, Keiichi DID believe Rena's hodgepodge at first, so having someone know for a fact that they were false was absolutely necessary.
