It's a pointless test but anyone who is actually good at Japanese can pass it easily (except for maybe the stiff grammar parts of n1). even people who suck and can't speak Japanese can pass n1, so of course someone who is actually good should be able to pass it easily. the guy who passed the top level of kanken can't even speak japanese he just memorized scribbles.

For most of my Japanese reading career (4 years now) I’ve averaged about 30 minutes of reading most days, and I definitely felt improvement up until a certain point. But that improvement has been stagnant for quite a while now and I’d been wondering why my reading flow and pace wasn’t really improving that much anymore.

Then I decided to challenge myself quite a bit more than I ever have, aiming for 3 hours of reading Japanese a day. Mostly light novels, and if I read manga I’d count it as 2/3 the amount of time since I know manga involves looking at pictures and stuff (some might find that silly, I think its just more accurate for me personally).

Anyway, I found that after just ONE day of reading for 3 hours, the next day my reading felt so smooth, fast, and near effortless compared to before! Now some of you might be thinking “duh doing something for longer would make it easier” but heres the thing, that was ONE day.

It’s not like I’d never read 3 hours of Japanese before (probably around 800 hours total by now), but the 3 hours was always spread out over a few days to a week. Yet somehow, doing that much in a single day, turned on something in the Japanese-reading part of my brain that hadn’t been activated to that extent before.

So this taught me something I didn’t quite realize prior to this experience - its not only the amount over time that counts, but the volume over a given period of time. つまり、3 days of reading 3 hours a day, appears to be more powerful than 18 days of reading 30 minutes a day - even though they both add up to the same amount of time!

Just thought I’d share that for anyone who’s been stagnant in some area and has the time to do longer reading days (or whatever you want to practice - probably applies to listening, writing and speaking too) here and there to give you that boost in abilities! I personally think I’ll be happy if I can get in 2 or 3, 3-hour reading days a week, even if the rest are the regular 30 minutes or so.

Thanks for reading. Please share your thoughts and experiences!

I had a similar experience to you regarding the whole first falling in love with some romanticized idea of Japanese culture I had in my mind because of anime and that sort of stuff, then trying to learn Japanese, and finally ending up realizing that Japan isn't what I imagined what I thought it was. Early on, I also got attracted by many videos and articles I saw on Japanese culture where stuff that I'd seen in anime appeared (like takoyaki, people wearing yukata while going to summer festivals, hanami, and tiled roofs). This is probably gonna sound pretty stupid and obviously unrealistic, but because of this sort of stuff, I imagined Japan as some eternal happiness fantasy land full of cute schoolgirls having fun everyday lives. I also sometimes imagined myself getting to married to a traditional Japanese Yamato Nadeshiko wife because I'd seen memes (all of them made by Westerners who'd probably never actually been to Japan) claiming that Japanese women are more faithful and better at cooking than Western women.
The fact that many AJATTers/MIAers talked about how they were learning Japanese through anime didn't help either, and the more I noticed that Japanese words used in anime are also used by real life Japanese people, the more I felt like I had to keep on watching anime so I could eventually discover this supposedly great country.
Then I finally encountered real Japan and real Japanese people. I ended up having to accept that Japan is a real country, full of real people with real responsibilities and issues, and that even though many elements of Japanese fiction are inspired by real life Japanese culture, there is a strong difference between them, and that manga and anime are no less fictional for Japanese people than they are for anybody else.
In contrast to you, what I ended up hating the most is Western otaku/weeaboo communities who spread myths about Japan being just like anime and who take 日本人論 claims about Japan being a unique country with a unique culture at face value.

Oh BTW, summers in the Gulf Coast of Mexico are usually just as hot or much hotter than in Japan.

Due to my work i don't have much time. My free time is really small, just one or two hours at night. Sometimes more if I'm lucky. So what I do is:

Whenever I'm working on my PC...

Listen to music if I need to be creative
Listen to podcasts / YT / audio books / online tv if i just want to pay attention to something.

Looks the same but it's not. If I'm just wanting for creativity, not all noises work for me. Only music moves me to what I call my "creativity zone" and that doesn't work with videos, podcast or others. But on the other hand, my work most of the time is pretty automatic. I've been doing this for years so i don't need to think too much what I need to do, pretty similar to driving when you're a newbie vs years of experience haha

In my reduced free time i try to do things like...

Read a light novel or manga i like. Novels are still hard so I'm on the easy way.
Watch any kind of visual, insert here anime / YT / cartoons / drama...

For mangas i have some of them i bought from Japan. I got the ones I love, this way i was pretty sure i would read it because i love them.

same question basically we all know there are lots of similar looking kanji and going down the recognition route we often never really learn which exact ones are being used in a word its just the general shape and compound combination that triggers recall of the reading and meaning

what im wondering is if practicing writing somehow helps you remember the exact kanji being used in words you havent explicitly practiced writing or if practicing writing somehow lets you passively pick up the ability to write words you recognize but didnt practice writing as you see them in your input later on
