It's decent, but reading it straight through is sheer endurance. In total, it's over 2,000 pages worth of English. The interest level varies greatly from one book to the next. For example, some book are absolute drags to read, like the one where Pliny lists every single town and village in the Roman Empire at the time of writing (c. 70 AD), or the one where he lists literal thousands of (mostly magical and superstitious) remedies, most of which read something like this:

However, there are parts that are extremely interesting. For example, the Romans had visited with the people in modern-day Sri Lanka, and they were amicable with them. There are also some remarkable astronomical facts reported in another book, like how the Greeks had calculated the circumference of the Earth within 95% accuracy.

Overall, I will be glad to have read it, as the entire work is important in the history of encyclopedias and the history of Rome. It's one of the first works where someone tried to compile ALL the knowledge of a given civilization. While a lot of it is inaccurate to the point where there is quite a bit of literal gossip and hearsay published in it, the fact Pliny undertook such a massive project 1,500 years before a concept of scientific organization had arisen is really astounding.

If you want to check them out, here's a link to a cracked copy of every single Loeb Classical Library book. That's probably the most forward translation to use for the Natural History, since Loeb has a translation of every single notable Greek and Roman classic work, including extremely long multi-volume sets such as Livy and the like. I'm personally checking out copies from my uni library, but unless you have access to an academic library, it'd probably be hard to get access to physical volumes of Loebs.

You have to wonder how all these weird little folk remedies came into existence. Some magical or other prescientific ideas make a lot of sense, like the doctrine of signatures (rhodedendron cures jaundice because it's yellow, walnuts are good for headaches because they look like brains, etc.). Others like hermeticism have a lot of shit that doesn't make sense from the outside but is internally consistent in a weird and esoteric way based on lots of complicated counterintuitive rules. And then you totally random folk cures like this. How do you get from "pinkeye" to "wing of bat"?

Well, to be fair, the specific example I used was fictitious. I made up the example I used based on the thousands of remedies I had read in the Natural history. There is a brief essay on Roman medicine at the end of the book, explaining how classicists reconcile Pliny's advocating so many dubious practices.

In essence, Roman medicine was based around the notion of popular, or folk, medicine rather than evidence-based medicine. Some of the Greeks, such as famed doctor Asclepiades, practiced evidence-based medicine. However, Pliny tore into Asclepiades' methodology, likely not an objection over his view of medicine so much as because Pliny was skeptical of the Greeks, seeing them as a bunch of prancing, lala sissy men as many Romans of the time did.

Some concepts common in Roman popular medicine were the ideas of magic numbers (chief among them three, seven and nine), the idea of "transferring" a disease to an animal through its mutilation (it was thought that the bodily complaint of the patient would depart with the animal's death), and the use of wine, honey, and hydromel as popular balms or drinks which were infused with substances supposedly possessing medicinal properties.

Yep, precisely this. Nearly all of Pliny's remedies are folk remedies and superstitions obtained through his many, many authorities. Pliny himself even expresses distaste and suspicion of their efficacy, as he refers to whole books passively, where he would write something like "It is reported that..." or "It is said that..." instead of directly stating "This cures that."

One remedy which I found very entertaining though is his personal suggestion to wear a woman's breast band around the head to relieve headache. Picturing an obese, old Roman man constantly dictating every thought that comes to his mind to a scribe slave while wearing some poor slave girl's bra as a turban is pretty funny.

More or less. I took four years of it in high school, culminating in getting a 5 on the AP Latin. I haven't practiced it in ages though, I'm studying something very different at college right now.

I still have a lot of appreciation for the Classics, but at this stage of my life I'd prefer to just read translations. The nice things about Loeb volumes is that they're bilingual: Latin on the left page and English on the right page. Occasionally, I'll glance over at the Latin and glean a bit of the sentence structure lost in translation, but usually I just read the English straight through. The translators Harvard employed to compose the translations do a fine job, although they smooth things out, so if you were to take some of the English verbatim from the copy of the book, the professor would likely know you cheated and didn't translate it yourself.
