a lot of bullshit, exaggerations, fake news etc. i'll give one example: recently english news sites were talking about the law in japan that married couples have to have the same name. a lot of sites were reporting that the law requires that women take the husbands name and that it's a sexist law but that's not true, they can use either name or even make a new name. the law is not sexist and treats both the husband and wife equally.

japan times in particular has been known to push the views of whoever owns them. they have faces some controversy in the past for changing views on certain topics when ownership changed. japan today rolls with the "weird japan" shit (but then again, who doesn't? even the new york times and the new yorker share weird japan shit).

i stopped reading western "news" altogether, but especially when it's about japan. lots of news stories here every day that they ignore because it's not weird enough or doesn't make japan look bad.

prep schools have industry standards they all operate the same way with little variation. if you know how japan works at all you'd know that, but on a personal level when i was researching schools to apply to i went through the curriculum of all of them

the reason its easier for babies to learn japanese than for adults, is because adults are more biased towards their native language.
if you hear the word "nihon", your adult brain immediately identifies the individual sounds "n" "i" "h" "o" "n" and focuses on that, while ignoring other aspects like pitch accent. but a baby doesnt care. the baby doesnt even know what a sound is. the baby just mimicks what the japanese person says without bias

once you become aware of this, you can learn like a baby too. just turn off your brain and actually listen.
