Try writing out the ones you know just four or five times (use a stroke order guide at first), and you’ll probably find you have an easier time learning new ones.

Manga? Not nearly as much, since manga tends to use much more colloquial language and not too many Chinese compounds, and the vast majority of language there is obviously that of the speech of the characters. Unless one of those characters is a Confucian scholar or something of that nature, his speech will be, well, very speechy.

Incredibly inefficient. Sentence cards provide you with the big triple punch, offering an unbelievable four hit combo if you read the sentence out loud.

1. Individual word learning

I’m gonna catch hell for this, I’m sure, but this is one of the reasons I think RTK is worth the time: it separates the (usually single, basic) meaning of a kanji from it multitude of readings. That’s not a bug, it’s a feature, trust me.

Now, if I were learning a Chinese, it would not be worth the trouble, since the vast majority of characters in Chinese have only one reading in any given dialect.

if you arent a brainlet then all you really need is to grab a small core vocab deck, and write out the kanji for your first 500 reviews or so (doesn't even have to be from memory). once you've done that, your brain will have gained the capability to instantly recognize the main components that come up in kanji, like being able to instantly pick out the 3 components shared between the kanji in these words 飲む 欠ける ご飯 返る , enabling you to tell kanji apart from one another.

and once your brain can do that, learning new words along with their kanji will be 一石二鳥 the whole rest of the way, especially if the words have a sentence for context. the kanji meanings can come from learning the japanese words they appear in. no keywords or mnemonics and shit necessary.

if you can do that (anyone over 110iq should be able to) then RTK is unnecessary and overkill, and wanikani is unnecessary and overkill. just do vocab and read whatever.

I've been learning Japanese since December. I've tried learning Spanish and French in the past, but the tasks felt so mundane. In comparison, they're not much more than replacing English vocab. I stopped due to boredom. Everyone warned me that Japanese was too hard, and told horror stories of how confusing it was. After using websites or apps like Drops for a while, I was afraid I wouldn't get any further. I was looking through language learning blogposts and articles for weeks. The last one I read was one that you wrote, that linked this YouTube channel. After watching a few videos, I was confident that I could actually learn. In the foreseeable future, I might actually be able to communicate with this tiny island that puts out such amazing creative works. Games, shows, movies, graphic novels. I really look forward that point. And now, I look forward to the journey to get there.

kanji mnemonics at the end of the day are just there to remember what radicals go where. eventually they just fade away and its just radicals although they can help in a pinch. if you need mnemonics for kana you're legimately ngmi though

you use a mnemonic if there is something specific that gives you trouble. it's meaningless if you do it for everything and just wastes time while filling your brain with extra junk instead of just remembering things by association.
I learned 40 kanji a day for ~3 months and since then I went down to 3 kanji a day because it's not that important anymore. during that time my retention rate was constantly around 95% without mnemonics. it's still like that now

let's say it's not a kanji where you can just instantly know the reading because of a common element like how most kanji with 反 in them are pronounced はん and you can just remember any exceptions.
in that case, you can still narrow things down a lot while breaking them down radical by radical. for example if I learn 捉 and 括, I can associate them with each other and remember which is which between the two, rather than picking from the set of all kanji. or with all the 雨-radical kanji, I just remember that snow has 雪 that thing on the bottom, 雷 has 田, 電 has half of 竜, etc. I don't think that's a very good explanation but that's more or less all I do. I subconsiously/consciously group kanji up with similar kanji and disambiguate from there.

Well, of course you didn’t. You were listening, so that language simply didn’t occur.

Anything which appears in spoken language can obviously appear in written, but a giant chunk of language which is perfectly comprehensible in written just doesn’t show up in spoken because the homonyms are far too numerous. As you read more and more, you’ll encounter a great deal of entirely new vocabulary for that reason.

It’s a strange concept, but some language is, for all intents and purposes, written-only. A good example of this would be Classical Chinese. Perfectly understood in its written form, but incomprehensible (except for very well-known phrases) when spoken.

Just taking your specific suggestion, 人 and 者 are extremely different in meaning.

Just trust me on this: every time an attempt to “simplify” the script is made, not only do things become even more complicated, the “simplified” script NEVER actually replaces the old one; it coexists alongside it.

And now you have another set of characters to learn. That’s what happened with that ugly mess called “simplified Chinese”.

That’s how we get crap like 干果 getting translated as “fuck fruit” (because 乾 and 奸 both got collapsed into 干) and meaningless crap like 叶 replacing 葉.

>> No.33575208

An explanation that doesn't become clear from your own experience is likely false confidence that'll make you feel worse if reality betrays your expectation later.

One of the best reasons to get a lot of contact is you stop treating the language like an area of study and have no ability to make an intellectual disconnect from it.

You can't say "Why does it work like that?" anymore.

You start just getting used to it because you become more intuitively aware that no amount of complaining makes a difference, and that getting used to it really is enough, instead of trying to intellectually frame it.

I am often caught between wanting to give people answers to questions like "What does this word mean? Why is it different?" because I know someone with less experience will do it instead and likely make the situation worse and not wanting to give answers because I know that if they actually think they understand the explanation without getting more experience of the word then I'm contributing to a harmful pattern for learners just by 'helping'.

Teaching people to rely on answers and acting like being told the answer is enough to understand - is bad.

1. Because they will overstate their understanding from lack of experience
2. Because if they don't understand the explanation they'll think they're stupid

I’m more of an immersion learner and one area that has been quite difficult to practice was reading. I live in Japan and do get assorted reading practice but I have always been intimidated by finding fiction to read. The sheer amount of vocabulary and kanji in most novels that I don’t know puts me off. I want to read fiction but I thought I should find something for younger readers to give a challenge without being overwhelming

The first attempt wasn’t quite right. I bought some short story books for junior high students, which I could grasp the plot but the details were lost on me. I’d describe it as i+2 The point of this is to practice and build up my confidence, so I decided to go a bit lower. I’ll definitely return to these later though!

Today’s trip proved more fruitful. I got an elementary level book from the same collection as the first two and an encyclopedia of Japanese urban legends. I’m definitely most excited about the latter! I already read about “Hanako-san of the Toilet” and I am thoroughly entertained. I’m so excited to begin my foray into Japanese fiction!

For those who have read books in Japanese, how did you approach it? Slow and steady...or headfirst into the deep end?

my middle school offered japanese and i took it and the classes were complete shit not even taught by a native i nonetheless aced it all but quit after two years and didn't touch japanese for a long time until i finished high school
then i suddenly remembered that i once tried to learn japanese and thought i might take a look at what i can do still and google how to learn japanese and came across tofugu and a blog about how some dude used akb48 akbingo as immersion material
and i got into idols and found the akb48 general on 4chan and went there for two years and watched idol variety shows, at first english subbed yet slowly but surely getting into unsubbed stuff and following their twitter accounts until i finally got sick of the whole idol shtick, found djt on the same board, read about the input hypothesis (which i intuitively knew was correct since i learned english the same way) read 25 vns, watched 300 anime, read 100 lns and 300 volumes of manga and now i know japanese

i originally used to visit 9gag then switched over to r/dankmemes but jumped to /r9k/ when after i saw a few funny-looking screenshots of frogposts from there shared on r/4chan. after that i started browsing /pol/ and just when the whole MAGA thing erupted i saw the "Trump will make anime great again" pics and the Awoo girl so i went to /a/ and /jp/ for more information on this conservative anti-libtard meme-authority-approved form of entertainment.
i also saw some anime recs charts on 9gag roughly around the same time so i decided to watch a few classics like fmab and cowboy bebop.
at some point i also came across based homofascist icon yukio mishima so i decided to learn japanese so i could access his works and proclaim independence from the spirit of the ever-fleeting present and assert myself as a warrior of amaterasu.
