Honestly depends on person to person and how much time you invest into it. Are you willing to spend an hour to thirty mins each day refreshing and expanding what you know? In a few months you could easily read most stuff with a little Jisho help. TYPE-MOON works are usually a little harder to read due to the way Nasu (and for newer works, Sakurai) write. If you see yourself reading more Japanese Novels and VNs it's a great use of time. It can take some a year to read something like Yotsuba, some only a few months. Once you get to that level, anything after is just learning Kanjis. Mahoyo is pretty well written (think young adultish equivalent in English). The English patch will probably be out by the time you're able to read it.

There is a big difference between not liking pure romance and "I have no interest [in] romance in general". The former is fine (pure romance isn't my favorite genre either), but if you actually have "no interest [in] romance in general" I will stand by the statement that the medium is not for you. Mahoyo. Pretty much everything about it is incredible. The writing/prose is the strongest I've ever read from Nasu. The characters are complex. The plot is fantastic, and the presentation is amazing. Chapter 12 is unquestionably one of the greatest climaxes in Type-Moon history. I only consider the end of HF comparable.
