Sure, you could say "Rika just wants to bring along a familiar face" but that goes against her just leaving Satoko to her own devices. The Rika she met was taken over by this witch in june of that year and she has been wearing her skin all this time pretending to be the same person.

Well, technically the original Matsuribayashi Rika had her head filled with the memories of other worlds and became looper Rika. So she's not really dead but her personality is heavily altered as a result.

If you die and a god puts all your memories in the head of a version of you from another reality, you have taken over their body and erased their personality, but technically your alternate self is not dead. He's just obtained memories out of nowhere that changed him into an exact copy of you.

Remember that looper Rika still had vague memories of what happened to the original Rika before she took over (like receiving a ball to the head or falling down a small cliff). She's a combination of her carried over memories and the memories her current body had up until that point.

Rika mysteriously forgot everything about Minagoroshi, maybe because of Hanyuu plotting something or because her plan to remember her death backfired and it was traumatic enough to make her forget that whole life. Bernkastel kept those memories during the joining fragments part of Matsuribayashi, but Rika herself forgot all of it. But Rika's words to Hanyuu in Minagoroshi made her change her attitude and she became much more useful to Rika in Matsuribayashi. So Rika's development was lost but she was able to convince Hanyuu to be useful before that.

Matsuribayashi Rika doesn't remember a thing from Minagoroshi and she barely believed Hanyuu when she told her about Takano or about Keiichi managing to save Satoko by having the whole village join him for her sake. So technically Gou Rika still hasn't gotten over that mindset you mention. This is even pointed out several times and the viewer is reminded of it in Nekodamashi (when Rika is surprised at Ooishi and Keiichi playing Mahjong, or Akasaka showing up at the store, those things happened in Minagoroshi too but she doesn't know).

From her point of view, she got lucky in Matsuribayashi thanks to Hanyuu. The last world she remembers is Tsumihoroboshi, where Keiichi showed her a miracle and remembered shit.

Someone in the last thread said that Higanbana takes place in a high school. What the fuck was he smoking? It's clearly an elementary school.

Higanbana never states which grade the characters are in, but some of them have budding breasts, so probably 5th and 6th grade. Imata sensei has a talk with Hikaru about how kids in the lower grades can't understand the "evil intent" of animal killers and the teachers have a hard time explaining it to them, implying that they are very young, like 6 or 7. The characters are often portrayed wearing randoseru in the (awful) manga and some official art. Yukari is taller and stronger than most boys which is something typical of preteen kids. The way the characters behave and talk also makes it clear they are elementary schoolers. They have rabbit pens in the school. They don't have to wear a middle school uniform at all (in fact, Marie fantasizes about wearing her sister's junior high uniform). Kanamori mentions that Marie will graduate the school next year and move on to a place where she won't be under his control, which only makes sense if she's in the last year of elementary. And the teachers constantly refer to the kids as children and say things that imply they are prepubescent brats, not teenagers.

How can someone read the entire thing thinking they are teenagers? Wouldn't everything, from the story to the characters, stop making sense three hours in?

Is it just me or does every Higanbana chapter have its own "answer arc"?

-Chapter 1 and chapter 11 are both about attractive teachers who seduce a kid and then take advantage of them to satisfy their darkest desires, and they end up killing them because they fear being found out. In both cases, the teacher is punished thanks to a youkai who took interest in the victim beforehand.

-Chapter 2 leaves you with an uneasy feeling about a certain character's fate and chapter 6 reveals what became of them.

-Chapter 3 and chapter 9 are counterparts and their main protagonists (and the youkai) are polar opposites of each other. The endings are also different due to the different natures of their struggles. One is about using escapism to deal with a harsh reality and the other is about focusing on reality to keep your mind empty and avoid thinking about depressing shit.

-Chapter 4 deals with a chuuni loli who struggles to make friends, while chapter 12 is about the same loli losing her only friend and learning to cope with it.

-Chapter 5 is about an asshole kid who gets bullied for being a fucking smartass prick and takes his frustration out by torturing small animals. A youkai approaches him and helps him mutilate his bullies in revenge. In the end, Higanbana punishes him for it and he meets with a terrible fate. The chapter as a whole is disconnected from Marie's story (she barely does anything) and only serves to demonstrate Higanbana's particular sense of "poetic justice". She's the star of this chapter.

Chapter 14 feels like a counterpart to that. It's about a kid with artistic talent who gets bullied for being too nice, but he vents his frustration by drawing beautiful things. Higanbana becomes friends with him and is intrigued by his attitude. The bullies fuck the kid up and leave him blind for the rest of his life. In the end, Higanbana punishes the bullies and eats them. The kid grows up and has a relatively happy life despite his disability. Once again, the chapter has fuck all to do with Marie and is all about how Higanbana became the person she is now.

-Chapter 7 and chapter 13 are about Yukari dealing with different manifestations of bullying, from both sides, and ultimately reaching some sort of temporary "solution" to the problem. They complement each other really well and are probably my favorite set of chapters in the VN.

-Chapter 8 and chapter 10 are both chill chapters where nothing significant happens, a whole bunch of past and future characters appear as cameos, there is quite a bit of comic relief and Marie's character is explored in a subtle way as she interacts with the illusion of the old school building and the characters in the mirror world.

I find it interesting how Ryuukishi only introduced half of the ranked youkais in the first night. When I started reading, I assumed that each of the chapters would introduce a new youkai to Marie and by the seventh one we would've met all of them. But instead of being formulaic like that, Ryuukishi found excuses to avoid introducing half of them.

In the first chapter we meet Higanbana. In the second we meet the Headmaster. But after that, he comes up with a dude who isn't officially ranked but is the second "in the shadows", fucking Sakunoshin, and a newly born dude who is trying to usurp Marie's seat and ends up getting killed. The sixth chapter doesn't introduce anyone and by the seventh we finally get our fourth youkai.

It's funny how there's that huge stretch between the 2nd and the 7th without any officially ranked youkai being introduced.

Higanbana is objectively the "weakest" work of R07, due to its nature as a series of short stories. It doesn't even attempt to reach the level of a massive WTC story with a huge cast of characters and a setting that becomes more and more familiar each episode. It's not a proper linear story full of incredible moments and lovable characters like RGD.

And yet, despite my absolute love for all of his other works, Higanbana is the one I can't stop thinking about. I love its music, its atmosphere, its characters, the individual stories, the child characters, the youkai society and their powers, how it perfectly captures the subtle feelings of insecurity and fear that come with being a kid... Damn, I don't know why but I fucking love Higanbana. It's incredibly comfy and immersive despite being depressing as shit. If his other stories are crazy emotional rollercoasters, this is like a deep plunge into a dark abyss. I just want to know more about this world.

There's like two routes I can see Gou going down and both of them are kind of shit and are entirely pointless, one is it just being a continuation of Higurashi with it being a sequel and the other is it linking Higurashi to Umineko. The first one is pointless because Higurashi was already a self-contained story with a perfect happy ending, we didn't need a continuation that throws Rika in through the loop again, and the second one is pointless because we already have Saikoroshi-hen along with Umineko that links it already. Plus Gou has spent the first 19 episodes basically just doing Higurashi again anyway with the only link so far being Featherine who I'm willing to be won't even introduce herself as Featherine and instead as like "Oyashiro-sama" to keep it vague. I feel like R07 was genuinely a better writer than this but now I don't know.

I don't remember the details of Rika's memories in between fragments. If you're right, it's kinda fucked up that the main story ended with the protagonist not learning from her mistakes and still getting a good ending because everyone carried her to victory. And if she did learn, it's even worse that a sequel backtracks on character development to justify it's existence.

Whether it's 24 or 26 I don't think it'll be more than that regardless of pacing.
