I always thought when it comes to the Meta-World that the personalities were separate entities, and that Beatrice was just the culmination of ghost stories and witch tales that Yasu and the servants created. But at the end, all of Yasu's constructed personalities like Shannon/Kanon/Beatrice are there but Yasu isn't.

The PS3 version makes the demon party at the end of EP2 so fucking awkward-looking and bright. There is no atmosphere and you can see the background so clearly it breaks the immersion of there being tons of demons and goats everywhere. It definitely felt and looked much darker in the original because of the filter, and the blurriness gave you an idea of the place without it constantly contradicting the narration with an extremely clear picture of an empty room.

I can see newfags finding that scene underwhelming if they play with the PS3 shit. It's a shame, they really are missing out.

I always thought that while magic definitely 'exists' it only exists in that everyone is in the Meta world and journeying on to Golden Land after the murders. So all of the logic battles over witches and magic with Battler/Beatrice/Bernkastel/Lambda/Featherine all happen but they're arguing over forgeries and fragments and murders that have normal human explanations and were written by humans. At least that was my understanding.

I think that's just because r07 didnt give much focus to the characters. I couldn't give much a shit about any of the gauntlet knights. There were so many with no distinguishing personality. I only began to care about a couple after reading the data fragments--why r07 threw characterization there like an after-thought is beyond me. I'd say that it's just the first phase, so he couldn't explore them much, but Ep1 of Umineko had a ton of characters and all of them were established well as soon as you met them and given good characterization through the episode (not to mention Ciconia's phase 1 was longer).
I feel worried. I really want to get invested, so I hope Phase 2 grabs me.
It would be amazing is r07 ditched the groundhog day plot device and Phase 2 picks up right where 1 left off. If he didnt make me care about the characters because almost all of them just fucking died and stayed dead, I would worship him.

That's pretty much my feelings on Ciconia as well. I didn't start caring about any of the characters until the Data Fragments and even then I'm not exactly hooked on any of them like I was with Higu or Umineko. I think the worst part is that even if R07 was sacrificing characterisation for worldbuilding or something he really didn't do a good job.

There are interesting concepts in Ciconia, like the future internet selcom or the incoming apocalypse, or the transhumanist shit that is going on with the meat labs, or the whatever the fuck 34 is doing in her lab with Mario, but the actual Big 5 factions that it focuses on are just so incredibly boring and bland. R07 basically just took modern day nations and then slapped them all together in a big union that spans continents in spite of historic rivalries and then introduced a single meme element that justifies all power dynamics. In fact the only nation that seems to have changed in any meaningful way is Japan as it was split in two between the AOU and the COU, but this isn't really elaborated on or explored in an interesting manner. It's a shame because this could have easily been an incredibly interesting part of Ciconia if Ryukishi just made the big five factions stand for like different nuanced political or cultural or philosophical ideals and then had the characters within their respective nations come into conflict over it, or if the respective conflicts between the countries that the various factions fight over were interesting and elaborated on in any way and made us want to take a side. But nope, the closest thing we get to a country with different ideals is the ABN and their ideals are 'being religious'. I know it's a meme at this point but compare the factions of Ciconia to Fallout New Vegas in which you have the NCR and Caesar's Legion and Mr House. All are nuanced factions with different goals and objectives and are just incredibly interesting overall. I suppose it might be entirely irrelevant in the end with Phase 1 just being the prelude to what is a post-apocalypse novel where none
of the factions really matter, but even then the apocalypse as it was shown in Phase 1 was also boring. I don't know about you, but the scene where all the drones are reprogrammed and start massacring people and end up killing like 3 billion people across the world feels like it should have been shown more, to play up the fact that this was the deadliest and most destructive day in human history and was a world-ending event. And yet all we see from it is like a 3 minute segment from the ABN where they talk generally about it and a part where Toujirou sits around doing nothing because he figured out that if he stands still he won't get killed. Maybe it was intentional and I'm being overly critical before everything has actually been finished, I dunno. I'm rambling.

As for characters, I think the only fun character scenes were Super-Homo Gayden trying to rape Miyao, and maybe the Okonogi photoshop challenge. I think the ONLY characterization we got for most of the cast was that video editing challenge. Meanwhile half of Higurashi is club activities and everyone hanging out, and Umineko beats you over the head with character archetypes and motivations so hard you could write an essay about every character by the end of episode one.

As for Keith I don't think it ended well for him. We weren't told anything about his fate, but I assume he either fled, got killed or maybe, just maybe, ended up working for the new Primavera.
For Butler I'm not sure, we aren't sure how the deadman's switch of Gabriel works, perhaps someone managed to defuse it or perhaps not. Regardless I doubt his future happiness with his sister being dead and all. If he goes down it would be so devastating that I assume that someone would cover it up for him. There is no way the government will allow that scandal to become public.
I have no clue what you are on about regarding the Wandering Dogs. Zel probably went to live a humble life with her father again after a while. As for whether Nina and Charles followed her I doubt it. Sure, they were her friends, but life goes on. Why would they follow her to a foreign country on the other side of the world? They had positions in Primavera waiting for them.
I don't know if I liked the ending, it felt very rushed. It needed an hour more at least. Leaving the future vague and not concluding everyone's story is fine, but don't ignore everything and just end the story like that. I am seriously pissed at Ryukishi, feels so unsatisfactory.

I assumed he married Meryl because they had many scenes together in the latter half of the story, including the one in the hospital where they see each other in a new light . And they also appeared next to each other in two separate shots in the Last Season OP. Plus, they kept Wayne's wife a secret early on when Julie asked about it, but they teased her with the answer. Since it wouldn't mean anything for her if it was some random girl, it has to be someone in the story. And I'm pretty sure it's not Jeanne herself (although they are practically the same age, around 25 or so, since Jeanne left home and married really fucking young). So out of Zel, Nina and Meryl I assumed it must be Meryl. She probably abandoned prostitution at some point and settled down with him to become a more mature person like she promised him. Also, his wife never shows up in the future when he's in his 80s, so I assume she's dead because she was a heavy drinker in her youth (Wayne didn't drink much). They never make it clear why he's raising his grandkid to be a fucking mafioso, maybe all his children are in the mafia too. Or dead for some reason.

I think Keith is dead. Without Alan's support his sniping skills are too specific and not that special, so Primavera wouldn't take him in. They would rather purge him because he's proven himself to be a fucking traitor that went against Madam Rose and he's a fucking nutjob by the end of the story, especially after the gut punch of losing Alan. Being a co-dependent schizo who has lost Alan and Richard, he'll probably end up commiting suicide because of the guilt. The GDS would also be after him because he's the one that killed Meixue in such a horrible way, and now he got Alan killed too. Meijiu has already lost his composure and had an innocent woman murdered to free that coward Butler from Gabriel's control, so I'd say he's turned into a worse person by the end of the story. It would make sense if he searched everywhere for Keith to fucking obliterate him and avenge his sister.

I think Gabriel's colleages were in America. But regardless of where they are, Butler has already lost most of his underworld contacts and is in custody after the death of Gabriel, so it would be hard for him to prevent the whole debacle. Maybe the director general and the other officials managed to stop it, but it's unlikely because they were unable to touch Gabriel during the story and had no idea what to do, to the point that he was comfortable ordering the police to do all sorts of illegal shit and nobody had the balls to stop him. They couldn't have prepared anything for the event of his death because it was so sudden, so I bet they all went to prison for corruption, hiring murders and dealing with mafias. Plus, the future Tokyo is very Chinese-centric culturally speaking, so I bet the massive scandal following Gabriel's reveals affected the upcoming elections and the Americans lost the capital to the Chinese.

Well, it's possible that Charles and Nina stayed in City 23. But keep in mind, Nina wasn't really that happy being a disgusting prostitute and only did it because she had no other choice. And Charles spent two years preparing to become James' right hand man and learning very specific things from him, but his boss is dead now and he's back to square one. Just a pickpocket with skills he'll never put to use because his future path was derailed by James' death. Neither of them were good at fighting or using guns, so they'd be pretty shitty mafiosos and die easily. It's possible Wayne told them to get out of that business because he felt guilty about turning all his orphan kids into mafiosos and getting them killed in Richard's false flag operation. Also, they seemed pretty enthusiastic about following Zel all over the world and wanting to be with her when she had to leave for the first time, so I assume they would still feel that way. Especially now that their future plans are ruined and they've seen the scary side of mafia feuds.

I personally loved the ending. It did feel a bit rushed, but I like the sudden stop (it was a story about Madam Rose after all, not about the entire history of Primavera). It allows you to come up with any fate you want for the characters, and it makes sense because Julie will never met any of them. They were people that surrounded Rose, not the focus of the story Jeanne is telling her. I also find it interesting that she kept her prostitute and mafia boss past hidden from her grandchild. I guess it's not something to be proud of.

If you want more story, you could read some of the fics in Archive of Our Own. DarkLadyoftheNight (I believe that was the name) wrote a bunch of stories that continue past the ending. Some of it conflicts with my own interpretations, but the writing is really good and everyone is susprisingly in-character.

The Higurashi manga is a very fast read and still conveys a ton more information and events than the anime, anyone could read it considering normalfags read all 1000 chapters of One Piece, BNHA, SNK etc. and everytime a new chapter comes out or is leaked it makes top trends on Twitter. Obviously Higurashi isn't as popular but still, the point is that they can, and it does trend in the west from time to time.
