Just my personal preference, it might not be your thing. Each game has its own perks. I liked Shoujoujo's tutoring and the heroines all had a different appeal, but the game has a noticeably older style. Oniichan Daisuki is more modern but the character designs are a deviation (took me a while to get used to the eyes) from older ones. Mebae is another solid choice but only has two heroines, your sister and a non-virgin school slut so be warned if you can't stomach that. She's a cute gamer girl though. Bishoujo is also a fine starter, but not very outstanding. There's also Mei Shoujo which caters more to weirder fetishes as you can see on vndb screenshots. Shoujo Ramune is quite infamous for certain stuff like the MC doing fucked up stuff and it having OVAs. Best heroine also has to go through something bad... Can't say much about Puu-san and Shoujo Kyouiku but I heard they're good.
I'd say get the game where the heroines look good to you. Or get a bunch at once, there's a torrent collection I think.

Shoukoujo has an HD release with reduced mosaics. But if you're using a smaller monitor the picture suffers from downscale aliasing so the original release might be better then. Bishoujo HD doesn't have that downscaling issue. Also make sure to get the latest patches from the Tanuki Soft website. Their games often have bugs.

Shoujo Kyouiku is good for something less rapey and "creepy" with a nice JC feel from all the heroines. For my own take, I's point to Grisaia as a really strong example of character design out of the gate.
All the important characters cut a very strong visual image that shows their personalities well.
Another VN I'd level on its character designs is Majikoi, which is much the same way.
Very strong, distinctive images for every character.
Also throw out one for Kara no Shojo, which despite having a "realistic" artstyle with muted colours is able to make a collective cast of dozens all look individualized.
Nukitashi is another VN I'd put into "good character design".
My point is more that it's really easy to get a sense of the characters just from the design, and that's what I think makes good character designs in general.
Any other games you people can think of which fit that?
