Her art was getting good too, not that it already wasn't outside of a monthly series, but she seemed like she was becoming more comfortable with the pace of drawing monthly. I really liked her designs for Ran.

My conception of the series was Okuu and Orin try to solve a mystery using the evidence they can find and come to decent but wrong conclusions and then Satori shows up and reads the mind of the real culprit and then explains how Okuu and Orin got it wrong. What we got instead sucked.

Character mystery is actually a pretty good concept and I'm actually surprised ZUN could pull a detective story using a mind reader without giving Satori a handicap (instead she has to deal with unique culprit and she has to gather clues from the victims).
Mystery doesn't have to be about murder or "the culprit is among us guize XD". Finding the nature and motive of the culprit are enough and you know these two traits are what distinguish Touhou characters (even if what they did are usually harmless) so at least it'd be like how Touhou canon story is usually written, albeit in different format and is actually closer to the game storytelling.
The last chapter was sorta picked up too with how much info we got about the culprit and Reimu finally about to get physical. I hope someone else continued the story.

Despite all the flak she got I liked the art. I think it's nice that ZUN picks lesser-known artists instead of just the most popular or obvious choices, it's in the doujin spirit and you get to see them improve as time goes on. Still, the fact the artist herself made the call to back out of it due to poor health out of the blue is a bit suspicious. Isn't she supposedly really young? Maybe the weight of responsibility was too much.

Yeah, I just realized it's nothing amazing, but we're so get used to mystery where the culprit is right behind our nose ala Scooby Doo but at this point it's an overused trope as well used mainly for wow factor.
This is more akin to a chase but it's not a bad concept, especially that the culprit is a ghost whose modus operandi is possessing other people to make them collapse or do her bidding. It's also could be a baseline for horror mystery.

Even if Moe and Aya are pretty talented artists, I don't want it to be an old one (and ZUN probably doesn't too).

As much as I want Zounose to be in, this doesn't feel like a story that will go even as dark as FS, so I'd rather not until something like FS comes in again.
With a character design change, either Ameyama Telegraph or ZAZENBEAT just feels like a straight upgrade of the current artstyle.

If I were to recommend a more unknown artist, Amidakuzu. Doesn't seem like it'll fit that well with his artstyle though.

It's seriously really hard to tell where it'll go next, I guess the story succeeds being a mystery in that sense.
Call me crazy but I don't feel like the spirit would be successful in possessing either Kaguya and definitely not Eirin. My best guess would be that Reimu goes to Eientei, but the people that gets possessed are Mokou and Keine so the culprit still gets loose.
It somehow still felt like CDS was still in the midst of warming up, if the culprit really was going to be revealed in the next few chapters then I would have no clue what would CDS be about afterwards.

I don't know if this sort of medium shift would be more or less awkward than changing artists partway through. Do we have any idea how long this manga was planned to on? I had the impression we were still pretty close to the start, especially if they were actually going to go through all the maingame events in order.

A decent number of 2hu artists have made r-18 manga, it's not going to be too much of a surprise if that happens.
Ironically though, around more than half of them have made r-18 material but not for Touhou. When compiling a huge list of Touhou mangaka I just found that to be an interesting recurring trend.

This is very sad. I actually really liked this manga and thought the character designs and clothing were really cool. It was neat to see all these super girly clothes on the characters like it was a shoujo manga. We also got to see Flan for the first time in forever and Tabard Chen.

CDS author has health problems severe enough to axe the manga. Machikado Mazoku author semi-regularly skips her chapters due to poor health as well, What is wrong with mangakas? Why are they so sickly? How bad can their conditions be?

I wouldn't be surprised if CDS ends up rebranding, like how the original Sangetsusei manga changed titles once they got a new artist for it. Even so, that was a slice of life manga and not a single storyline, so I'm really wondering what ZUN will do...

At least we still have this month's chapter, though. Hoping the artist manages to recover soon despite everything.

Terrible news. I hope the artist recovers soon and fully. This was my favorite of the manga and I enjoyed everything about it, the art, the mystery, the bones, all of it. Hopefully it could pick up at a later date, perhaps with Ginmokusei still on board once recovered.
