Games to test your Knowledge:
http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/mahjong/mahjong_e.html
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/scorequiz/yaku.html
http://arcturus.su/tenhou/scorequiz/

Please read 2-3 sites before playing and even then try the singleplayer games first.
Playing without knowing what you do is not only frustrating for yourself but also for your opponents, a player that left because he couldn't ron for his no Yaku hand or because someone ron'd his discard just kills the whole fun for everyone.

Usually, a game lasts around 30 minutes, so please, if you're not going to stay until the end, respect the other players and don't join a new game.

Also keep in mind that Mahjong is more a game of "not losing" than straightforward winning.
Furthermore you play with 3 other people and luck plays a big part in it, so dont expect to win more than 1 out 4 games, especially not as a beginner.

If you read some of the linked sites and still have questions feel free to ask.

Chitoitsu isn't great anyways. Since you can't call on tiles you have to rely on your own luck and hope you don't miss too many pairs or you'll never get it in time. If you do get it, it's barely worth any points unless you have the dora as a pair or riichi and hope for tsumo or uradora, which locks you into an otherwise great variable wait. It's a fun yaku that you can use to target tiles that people are likely to throw out, but it's not really worth it unless you don't have any other options.

wasn't specifically meant for you, just in general, since i think most (including me) didn't know where it stands/how to read it (and only saw your post after writing that one)

but yeah Chun would have been the obvious choice, but i didn't want to give up that hand even if it meant i would need some crazy luck.
Couldn't decide between 4s and 4m and should have gone with 4m because it was safer thanks to those discarded 7m.

In retrospect i think i should have discarded either the 3m or 4s to keep both pairs alive [and even then i probably would have done this] since i needed the Yakuhai from the chun or a dora (both +riichi) to be able to win with a direct hit and everything together to win by any other players discard.
In the end it was foolish to think that i would have to luck to become first with that hand

Give up that hand?
That pair of chun is what dragging you down.

Imho you can discard them for defense and for the chance to reach silent tenpai (pinfu maybe even tanyao).
It's still early in the round. The chance that your toimen has a shitty wait is fairly high. You could easily get a wait that makes your shimocha deal in without the fear of dealing in that riichi.

Do you seriously like to wait for a single yakupai?

I'm not saying I play perfectly. Not at all. I only say, in that situation waiting for someone to deal that single chun is desperate.

>I'm not saying I play perfectly. Not at all. I only say, in that situation waiting for someone to deal that single chun is desperate.

And i'm just a newbie presenting his oppinion, getting corrected is actually what helps me most in such situations

But for Pinfu i would have to draw either 2tiles that make an edge wait before i go into furiten for it or another Pair.
But a Yamiten Pinfu Dora 1 wouldn't have been enough to win even with a direct hit would it?

Going for a Tanyao would have been the other possibilty because i needed the dora for it and such it would have been 3 han without the riichi, but i would have also need to draw another Pair or possible Straight/Triple.

Seems equally unlikely to me, so i guess it depends on the mindset of the player, but since the whole thing already needed almost perfect draws the safer tanyao variant would have been most likely better

>> No.3334683

Because the Pei was the only tile left, I was hoping someone would toss this out as a safe tile. So declaring a richii was required to camouflage my hand and i had some draws left. Got a Tsumo instead.

>> No.3334724

>>3334622
Yeah. you would need perfect draws but in 4 tiles you could have (with perfect draws of course!!!) tanpin aka 1 dora 1, if you tsumo it's a mangan, if you riichi it's a mangan. With both it's a haneman.
If you can hit your shimocha you won.

It's another thing that we now know that east's wait wasn't really that bad.

I seriously don't know what I could say anymore that's not complete bullshit to discuss this even further. colon uppercase P

4 man. The dealer's riichi is unlikely to be among the manzu. Even if it was it felt like 4-7 wait and he just dealt 7. The point leader is not afraid of the manzu, which is encouraging.

4 man will turn dangerous towards the left (Was it shimo or kami?) in the future, better deal it now.

The riichi is probably 1-4-7 pin (since it isn't 3-6 pin), 4-7 sou or 2-5 sou in that order of dangerousness. With 2-5 being safest to deal against.

I would still deal 1 pin and 5 sou, if I got 4 pin for a riichi. Without 4 pin I would deal the chuns. Besides the point leader is going for end tiles, the chuns are hard to collect.

Then again, I just don't like third place, which is a realistic possibility with, which makes me too urgent here. A more defensive strategy (dealing the chuns) is probably correct.

As a part of teaching myself mahjong (and introducing myself to wonders of javascript), I wrote hand calculator (since I couldn't find any suitable for my needs around). It works in browser and is completely client-side -- if you like it, you can download and use offline. There are probably some bugs and inconsistencies, and it lacks some options yes (there are no ways to change rules for example), but it's good for a beginning player like me to study which hands bring what score.
