I majored in chemistry at a Japanese university in Japanese, and now I work at a chemical manufacturer where I deal with Japanese customers in Japanese on a daily basis. And let me tell you:

It's okay. For some people it's easier, but it's not only about your skills. I got JLPT N1 four years ago, and I still struggle at the konbini sometimes. Japanese is not an easy language. (At least for a person who speaks a European language, like me)

Please don't give up and know that you're not alone in this.

Also, if anyone is interested, please feel free to use the comments section to find people to practice speaking Japanese with. I'll share my very first video of myself speaking in Japanese, and I encourage you to do the same :)

I really suck at learning with books. I've made 1000x more progress using Elon.io than I ever did with Genki. The problem for me with Elon is that it doesn't seem to be following JLPT so while I've learnt a lot of N5, It's also moving prematurely moving me to N4.

Everything about Elon is perfect from the lessons to the revision section but I feel it's teaching me things I don't need to know yet in lieu of N5 material.

For instance, I say そうですね (is that so?) in conversation all the time. DESU, most people don't even notice. It drives my wife crazy though because she isn't learning Japanese so I'll ask her questions in Japanese and she'll get all cranky: "I don't know what you're saying!!" *.* To be fair, she isn't mean about it, she just starts laughing.
