How I like to think of it, is that Mahjong is actually a team game. Everyone should be trying to bring the person in top place down or take it for themselves. It's understandable that beginners don't know how to make high value hands but making jew hands when you're not dealer means there is a less chance for you and everyone else to make an upset.

here's some advice to newbies:

1) never discard live tiles or dora tiles after mid-round
2) discard safe tiles if someone goes richii if you don't have a hand
3) study other player's pond to determine whether they are ready to win or to determine what kind of hand they have. most players go for 3 color straights closed hands which is an easy 12000.
4) nothing wrong with discarding winning tiles if you believe you can win this hand. however if you did it for the sake of winning a shitty hand, you seriously need to re-learn the scoring rules.
5) if you believe someone has a big hand, it's ok to spoil the win with a crap hand. that's strategy.

UN.Owen, it's nice you learned to play properly, now you need to learn about a few things: you undesrtand that calling a kan reveals a new dora, raising the value of the hands of everyone playing. If you're not close to victory, calling a kan is like saying : "hey guys, I'll give you some more points so you can win more easily".

I think that's not what you wanted. So you have 2 choices: you can calla pon and keep the fourth tile for later, when you're in tenpai or isshanten, with the possibility of discarding it if someone calls a riichi. Or not calling at all, and keep your hand closed.

But a kan with no value, that early in the game, is just reckless (see picture).
