I don't have a real reason to be learning japanese, is that bad? (self.LearnJapanese)

submitted 4 days ago by Minisom

So I got interest in the language and culture like many when I discovered anime at around 13. I always thought the language sounded and looked super cool so I wanted to learn it. At the time I also wanted to move there like many young weebs do. At about 15 my mom got me some 1-1 classes. They lasted me for about a month or two. Due to financial issues I had to quit really early but still during this time I learnt hiragana and katakana fully.

After I dropped it I never thought of continuing it by myself, I just figured I didn't really need it. After a while I also got different interests besides japanese media so I never picked it up again.

Im 18 now and my best friend is learning japanese as part of her uni course. She mentioned once how it would be fun to be able to communicate in japanese between us, and thats basically all it took for it all to come back.

I already had a lot of interest in the language from before and this sounded like fun to learn together, also quarentine gave me a lot of free time so I figured "Why not?"

Since I'm studying animation at uni, when my parents ask me why I'm learning japanese it I always say "You never know, they have a big animation industry" but truth be told, I don't really want to work as an animator in japan. I dont even consider moving there in general anymore.

So essentially its been a couple of months, studying 1-2 hours a day and Its a VERY rewarding experience. I already know 3 languages but in my opinion, the more the merrier.

Thing is with how hard japanese is by nature, most people learn it out of need, they WANT it to have a purpose. Im just learning it because its cool and I want to gossip with my friend.

Would it be more advisable to quit and use my time on something else? Is it silly that I'm learning it even though I don't have a reason to besides wanting to?

TL;DR- Ive been studying for a couple months without a real reason as to why, and even though I'm loving it, would it make more sense to just give it up and do something else with my time?

A bit, because "radicals" doesn't cover every part of every kanji. The word primitives is used instead, because some kanji aren't radicals but are used as part of other kanji. Search up RTK, as it helps you remember kanji by the primitives that form it.

by the time you got to 3 weeks you would still be learning really basic stuff is what I mean, you'd have already encountered it in native content or core or whatever else you're doing on the side. if you already know any kanji you'll basically be wasting time doing nothing for multiple weeks. and it's not like wanikani's vocab section is useful, it doesn't make any effort to teach you what the word actually means past remembering the keyword

>>33074679

kanji.garden exists, it's pretty similar and it still has a paywall but you have a free month to binge as many kanji as you feel comfortable with and you can skip 大 and such. it's pretty much wanikani but better, I'd recommend that if you don't want to use a kanji flashcard deck which are free

I started doing sentence mining for a month and I realized that my immersion isn't as good as it used to be, now everything I do is watch anime with japanese subs to get 10 1T phrases, it takes a lot of time for me to find good sentences, should I just reduce the number of cards a day so I get more immersion or I just keep doing this? I know that watching a show with the target language is good, but ONLY doing it makes me a little unsure if I'm going to have good progress.

Am I doing something wrong? I need to watch between 4 to 6 hours a day to make 10 cards, I don't know if I will get easier over time. Because of this 4 to 6 hours I don't make only listening or only reading, I'm getting worried.

no because with more people being aware of the issues with opioids nowadays and that weed can be enough for certain levels of pain more people request to not be prescribed opioids if possible. obviously there is a need for some sort of reform of the entire prescription process and the influence big pharma has on it but giving end patients the option to have some sort of agency over what they're prescribed isn't a bad thing.

weed obviously isn't a wholesale solution to the issue and opioids will be in use for the foreseeable future especially for bad pain. but weed has its place in the whole thing. i work in a space tangential to this whole thing and the amount of anecdotal info i've gotten from patients is staggering.

still sucking ass although not that major anymore.
usually understand a decent part of more everyday dramas and anime (weird analyzing tool usually gives me about 75% line readabilty)
but i got this banking drama that's more like at a 30% probably due to all the long ass kanji words related to that that kind of topic

so i'm wondering if just letting it run with subs and minimal pausing it'd still be somewhat beneficial because looking up all the words would probably turn it into a long ass slide show

is it really fun watching stuff where u dont understand 70% of it lol when i was starting i just put stuff that was too hard for me in my backlog and came back to it when it was more appropriate to my level. as for whether it'd be beneficial, u aren't going to get a straightforward answer here. some people think pausing is good some people think its retarded, just do what u feel is right it doesn't matter too much in the end cause you'll still be good after ur 5000 hours of input anyways

it seems like both of you don't quite understand that if the doctors are going to prescribe opioids they are going to prescribe them regardless of what other painkillers there are otherwise they would've prescribed the other painkillers in the first place. adding weed to their options doesn't mean that doctors won't prescribe opioids since there are already alternatives

yeah, true. probably not. but if it's done well just watching it can be kinda engaging, too. maybe.
but yeah i mean just listening to shit should still train the ear, right? so at least might help with that. but yeah, i'll just watching something easier.

I mean there wasn't really the doctors prescribed it despite there likely being ways around it. but that's an issue with the doctors and has nothing to do with weed.

people who are into flatsos are actually retarded. here's what you do to turn your busty gf into an absolute w a s h b o a r d. start with her square to you and then grab her by the shoulders and turn her 3.14 radians and there you go absolutely flat surface.
