what made kanji a lot more manageable in my eyes was the realization that you don't have to know radicals or how to write them at all, your brain can actually recognize them individually and in words by the general shape once it sees them a few times, which makes learning hundreds of them a realistic task. Another important realization for me was that while you might not know a word, you'll usually recognize if you've seen it before. With this in mind, I made it my goal to read often enough just to expose my mind to all these common words more, and to forget about "learning them" - just seeing them in the wild and translating them each time will stick the important ones into your memory. This improves your reading skill a ton. Third, if you don't already use an addon like Rikaichamp, do it ASAP. It makes up for the lack of vocabulary you'll have as a novice to reading, so you can read most things on the Japanese net, and this will solidify the grammar into your mind. Fourth, don't read stuff online you don't have some exterior context on - Japanese is a seriously context heavy language, stick to topics you already know to minimize ambiguity until your grammar is better. Finally, don't be afraid to toss sentences or conversations directly into DeepL as a last resort - sometimes it will click things into place or give you a definition some dictionaries (even jisho) leave out.
