Hamabe is kinda ugly and not charming.
Also, this show isn't that great. The characters don't feel strong and the setup is weak. They also didn't play up the fujoshi part that much so you wouldn't think Hamabe was one by the acting and writing alone. Even though I don't think she's cute, glasses really do make her look better. It's the first episode so my opinion doesn't matter anyway.

I’m desperate to find sources of japanese tv and films that are subbed and it seems my only option is to find stuff released by critereon or buy dvds from a website which apparently just burns all of their dvds illegally
Specifically I’m looking for historical movies and taiga dramas
I watched about 20 episodes of the nobunaga one but can’t find anymore episodes and the quality was terrible anyway
Should I just give up on this?

Anonymous started today. I don't think the theme of the drama was explored before in such depth, much like its predecessor Kyouen NG, but unlike Kyouen NG, this didn't feel as good. It might have not clicked with me because it felt like it's gonna be an episodic drama with the main mysterious plot teased a little bit at the end of every episode and I'm so sick of this kind of dramas. Was about to drop it but then I fell for the mystery trap at the end of the episode and now I wanna know the whodunnit.

It's definitely not what I'm looking for, but thanks anyway. What I'm looking for is some kind of drama with a "slice of life" genre. You see, I recently watched Maborosi and for me it was really a masterpice which can even be compared to Red Beard or Ikiru. The film have some quiet style, in which the plot goes at a slow, almost melancholic pace, and only after some time you'll discover that everything is a lot more than it seems at a first glance. It's really hard to describe my feelings after watching this films - Koreeda showing the main character as a middle-aged poor widow, who has lost her husband and now struggle to find a peace in her new life, and the film directed in such a way that it shows all the sorrow of this woman without any words. It's a masterpiece and a truly work of art.

I started watching thanks to this post, and I am currently 9 episodes into the series. It's absolute /kino/, sure there are some plotpoints that feel artificial, but the actress who plays Rika is incredibly talented, so it's easy to sympathize with her as she deals with her mental and emotional issues. The show thankfully focuses on Rika's depression, which is portrayed in a nuanced and realistic way. I'm kind of sad that this series is so underground

well, if you want a great japanese film director, and subdued familial drama you can't beat yasujiro ozu. i'm assuming you haven't seen his films yet since you mentioned kurosawa first instead.

as for that minimalist style in maborosi, koreeda was probably heavily influenced by taiwanese new wave director hou-hsiao hsien, the originator of that style, so go check his films out. i'd start with a summer at grandpas or dust in the wind. he also made a really great japanese language film, and homage to ozu, called cafe lumiere

you should watch moe no suzaku (1997), & other movies by naomi kawase. also check out sakura no sono (1990) and sorekara (1985)

Was looking for a nice comedy to relax with tonight and stumbled on this one. I was pleasantly surprised by the "one-shot" style it went for since I wasn't expecting it at all and it was done very well. Wasn't as impressive as one cut of the dead but I still liked it. Teruyuki Kagawa was a really nice surprise as well.
