I went through the trouble of trying to look for photo manipulation by running a few filters, and I think I found some good evidence. Notice some "blurry" spots on her face. These were most likely points they photoshoped and softened out.

All things considered, I would say neither. Idoling!! is the best.
Morning Musume will come to a point where sales numbers will be so poor they will no longer be able to break even, thus forcing Tsunku to put up the shutters indefinitely due to lack of funds. Akimoto will eventually sense that his group has gone over the hill and go the same way as he did with Onyanko Club, turning the girls loose and letting their own talent agencies handle their careers.
Idoling!!, on the other hand, will live on so long as Fuji TV exists.

Because the way Momoko is posed and the angle of the camera is strategic. You're meant to look at her round ass cheek -- that butt shot is not coincidental or secondary to the overall composition of the photo. Or in short, the delivery matters just as much as the content.

A photographer takes thousands of photos and has all the photo-editing tools at his/her fingertips. The model is going to look cute in many of them. So, you have to consider why he/she decided to go a particular shot and all the embedded visual codes in that shot. Also, the company is headed by professionals who know their audience, the other options in the idol visual world (including soft porn), and the various codes of visual culture. Just as there is a lexicon for idol PBs (bikini, bed, school girl, dress etc), there are standards for erotic messages. If you think about it that way or if you've studied how to analyze images (like in a media studies or art history class), then these weird things stand out a lot. I mean, ever wonder why there are so many images of bikini girls holding or drinking out of a garden hose? I've seen a really creepy U-15 idol photo where the girl is spread legged directly into the camera and, even more uncomfortably, wearing frilly short shorts (panties?) reminiscent of labia folds.

I think all of these points have pretty much been over a hundred times every time H!P puts out a photobook, so I'm not going to go too much into this. I certainly recognize that H!P photobooks have varying degrees of subtle sexuality to them, that this is done on purpose, and that they use the same types of imagery you mention. I just think the drinking out of a garden hose / sucking on a popsicle / spread eagle in panties shots are in a different league entirely from this particular picture. Yes, Momoko's butt is facing the camera and we're probably meant to look at it. So what, she's 17. She's allowed to have a nice ass by now. But it's also at the same time a very cute shot of her looking over her shoulder, which is a pretty classic pose meant to make it seem like the model is looking back at the reader. Like you're having a fun day on the beach with her (in a non- creepy stalker way).

I think it's the second sentence that is really driving the "disturbing and creepy" reactions. We all saw Maki Goto grow up, and while there was definitely a backlash against her slutting out, it paled in comparison to the acceptance of it. Kago is a 21 year old woman. This seems to be the general concensus at this board (judging by the reactions to this and the previous PB thread), rather than the thought of the PBs being "creepy" (though I can see where Trike is coming from).

I think a lot of it has to do with the style and production too. I see her PBs as trashy rather than sexy. Yes, she's 21 and should be able to be sexy now. Hell, if she wants to be nude that's okay too - but nude and sexy can be done tastefully. Not that I expect an super artsy nude book out of her, but something about the way these few previews and the majority of shots from her last book were done are very off-putting. They look like her boyfriend shot them in his basement / a hotel or something. They kind of make you feel like a peeping tom looking at them - like these are photos that leaked by accident or she was forced to do them by a sleezy manager. Thing is that Maki never really had the childish, cutesy character that Kago ALWAYS had, and it was a gradual move into things like Some Boys, whereas Kago left H!P still in huge sparkly dresses and pigtails and is now selling photobooks of herself barely covered is what's jarring.

That, and a lot of us still have the image of her being in Minimoni and doing things like binging on desserts with Tsuji and punching Mari in the crotch and gigling afterwards. :(
