1. Same Touhou newb, only NORMAL MODO this time around.
2. >Deathbombing also has a penalty.
>You shouldn't be dying with any bombs left.

w8, wut? Anyway, are there any other Touhou strats besides the one at poolshmer?

>Deathbombing also has a penalty.
>You shouldn't be dying with any bombs left.

No conflict here. Deathbombing has a penalty but it isn't as bad as the penalty for dying. Also, if you have enough foresight to tell that you won't be able to dodge something, using a regular bomb before something hits you will have less of a penalty than a death bomb.

Scrub it for awhile and play reimu.
Don't focus on hitting the boss, just not getting hit. The homing shots will wear the boss down eventually. The non-multitasking should help you. Once you're used to it, then you can start paying attention to hitting the boss again.

>> No.322857

You should try Seihou first and then move on to Touhou. Much easier to start with and to get the hang of the whole curtain shootan genre.

What I'm not getting is "death bombing" period? Is it bombing on re-entry?

If you're just starting and not playing for high scores don't worry about the bombing penalty. Just focus on dodging/not dieing.

>> No.322863

The penalty for bombing is less than the penalty for deathbombing, which in turn is less than the penalty for dying.

So you should learn to recognize situations where you're fucked and bomb your way out. Death bombing is for when you get that nasty "surprise" hit.

>> No.322864

>>322860
Deathbombing is when you bomb RIGHT AFTER getting hit. If you hit it in time you'll use a bomb instead of a life.

>> No.322867

this is a good point. Vampire team is kind of hard to get used to, and Ghost team is just a complete bitch. Border is best choice for beginners, since they have homing, which magic team does not.

Magic team has the malice cannon, but that's still not something that's very easy to pull off without practice. Or turbo.

>>322860
Deathbombing is using a bomb after you get hit but before you use a life. Very difficult in any other Touhou game but pretty easy in IN. Border team gets the longest death bomb window.
Try one out first-hand. Pick border team, go for spell practice on a stage that has a good amount of danmaku stay still in a bullet's path, and bomb as soon as it hits you.

also PCB has a ridiculously tiny window for getting it unless you have superhuman reflexes.

Two thing before I'm at it again and you all won't see me until tomorrow:

It's been my experience that you have to actually hit bomb before you're hit--and I don't mean just think about hitting it, but actually, definitely hit the key before the bullet hits you.

And that's deathbombing in PCB.

2. I'm not really getting this Gauge thing either. What's the point of it?
The gauge states your status as phantom - human.
If you're >80% human you get time orbs by killing, if >80% phantom by grazing.
Youmu is different (30%?) cause she can only reach 50% on either side.

>> No.322946

>>322925
Shut up.

>>322920
IIRC, if your guage is above 80% (?) on either side, you'll gain time orbs. Unfocused side, for hitting enemies. Focused side, for grazing.

>> No.322947

>>322920
Time orbs: i.e small items you get by hitting enemies while or grazing. For more, you have to learn about the gauge at the corner. Read that at the wiki...

I swear I just applied that small thing, and instantly became good at IN.

>> No.322952

If you get your time point quota by the end of a stage, time advances half an hour when you finish instead of a full hour.
The gauge slides towards the side you're using the most. If the human side is at 70% or more, you get time points for shooting things. If the youkai side is 70% or more, you get time points for grazing.

>> No.322965

>1. Besides dying, what affects the end stage time?

I assume you mean when the clock goes ahead a half-hour to an hour after clearing a stage? If you collect the number of time tokens it asks for, it'll only increase time by a half-hour. If you don't collect them the amount, time will increase by an hour. Game over at either 4 or 5 AM I think.

>2. I'm not really getting this Gauge thing either. What's the point of it?

Gauge is dependent on which character your using more. If your at -80% or lower(human), you'll get time points for hitting enemies with your bullets. If your at 80% or higher (youkai), you'll get time points for grazing enemy bullets.

>> No.322968

This isn't quite obvious but try to go unfocused during the first stages, since there aren't enough bullets to graze, you'll have to get your time orbs by attacking unfocused. On harder levels boss battles, it's more useful to graze focused.

I said nothing bad about youmu. I said the Ghost TEAM. You can't play solo characters (or aren't supposed to be able to) until you've beaten the game with all the teams. And Youmu/Yuyuko is just fucking ANNOYING.

Youmu alone is difficult to get used to, but people who are good with her are REALLY good.

Playing Yuyuko solo, always focused and at the bottom of the screen, minimal left/right movement only.

Also, I observed that in 80%+ youkai side, you get time orbs from shooting REGULAR enemies. The time orbs obtained by grazing only takes effects in bosses.

Also, I suck. But then again, I was doing those goofy conditions, so yeah.
