I checked out a preview of RTK1, and after reading the introduction and the first few pages of the kanji list, I can see why it's so derided. It's especially irrelevant today because if you don't know the reading of a kanji, you have no way to type it, and if you can't type it, you can't look it up (except by assembling it bit by bit on sljfaq's multiradical lookup tool or by scribbling it into Google Translate or by some other annoying method).
