This is the shit reality of "Japanese" learning Youtube channels.

I studied Japanese and I can tell you that you should NEVER listen to any Youtube channel.

Yes, there are some good introduction videos which tell you the basics of Japanese like it's a SOV language and that it has three/four writing systems, but everything else is a time waste.

If you want to learn Japanese you either learn the language in around 8 years or you just waste your time. And guess what? NO ONE can learn for you.

That's why every smart person uses RTK, Anki, and textbooks to progress and only starts the "immersion" part after they are already on an advanced level.
All those channels who say things like

how do you guys like your hot chocolate? first and foremost i make it with milk because i'm not a tastelet nor am i poor. i am usually okay with making it plain but it's not bad to spice it up once in a while.

the things i've done before are:
-the classic, marshmallows. i usually like to melt the marshmallows into my hot choco to make it creamier, since i don't like really like how they feel in my mouth by themselves. these two opinions of mine lead me to the obvious conclusion that in my case, smaller marshmallows are superior. they melt faster, and if they get in my mouth, they're not much of a bother.
-whipped cream. this is my go-to, since i can have the creaminess of marshmallows while not having to deal with actual marshmallows. but sadly, i don't have access to authentic whipped cream all that often.
-candy canes. okay, that sounds really weird, but hear me out. i know that peppermint hot chocolate mix is a thing, but it's usually much more expensive than regular hot chocolate! i may be rich enough to have milk as the base, but i'm too poor to afford actual peppermint hot chocolate. also, the only time i even do this is around the holidays. i just have so many candy canes due to family so i have to use them in some way. and melting them into my hot choco is the best! it's a nice minty taste.

think about it this way: fluency is nowhere near native level - fluency should be your basic goal. fluency is typically defined as 10,000 words. Idk where that number comes from, but let's go with that. if you only learn 10 new words in a day then you will reach 10k in 3 years. if you read books, play games, watch tv or browse the web in japanese every day surely you will stumble across at least 10 words that you don't already know. if you can manage 20 words then you can reach it in 2 years.

from the point of fluency it will be even sooner until you reach native level as you will already have a large understanding of the language. natives know around 30k words (some know more, some know less).

yes there is more that goes into being fluent than just vocabulary, I understand that, but output ability, pronunciation and grammatical understanding are very basic skills and you should have no problem acquiring those skills within the same amount of time that it takes to learn 10k words.

however, vocabulary makes up the large majority. if you have a good vocabulary you can still express what you want to say without the grammar being entirely perfect. your speech can still be understood with an accent as well. file kanji under vocab because studying kanji in isolation is a hug time waste. you're trying to make an argument that doesn't matter at the end of the day. it's not as if you're going to just sit down and learn 10-20 words in a day - you're going to read books and watch tv and talk with people and post shit online and somewhere within that learn 10-20 words.

I live in Japan and use Japanese in my daily life. I know probably around 20,000 words and based on my experience I think the 10,000 guy is mostly correct. When I finished the JLPT vocabulary lists (N1 puts you at around 10,000 words) I felt pretty fluent and had no problem whatsoever communicating with my peers however my output wasn't as "artistic" as what my native level peers were of course able to do. But I was able to pick up more words just reading books and living my life and I feel pretty close to native level now.

Update on the light novel: I got a call from the publisher this morning and they greenlit my book. The potential artist liked what she read and agreed to do the character art, we're going to have a meeting next week about character designs. She will present some draft designs and I get to approve and give feedback before she draws full illustrations for the retail version. The editor said there's not any huge grammatical problems (or not any more than usual) but I will be getting some feedback and have to rework anything that he finds problematic. I'll keep you guys updated but if everything goes smoothly it will be released towards the last quarter of this year.
