I'd rather talk more about the stuff Anons posted about up there. How a fully backed and very promoted 40th Anniversary single didn't manage to sell alot more than than the one before it. They even had the hype from coming off of having a #1 last time too.

Well I think the answer is obviously complex, I think what you saw for this release was a more traditional promotion campaign, counting on appearances like Music Station to try and resurrect an older model of promotion. But by doing so perhaps they have trampled on what had been working for the previous release, like putting more money into the PV and having it played on the Video Music channels more.

In my opinion, I think Tsunku is experimenting yet once again, this time with the now graduated elder class. And I think he is now realizing he did the right thing by getting the entire group off the standard payroll. This is certainly not to imply the girls are worthless now, but they are more complex, with Nono hitting the young mother crowds and Mari with her audience, they have evolved.

It's funny how every time someone is supposed to make a comparison, he brings up achievements from almost 10 years ago obviously accomplished by people who aren't the same as today's lineup.
It truly shows that your current idols have no merit of their own and have to constantly piggyback their infinitely more popular predecessors in order to try and legitimize their position.

That's pretty much the size of it, and it's also quite sad to see how neither side of the business knows when it's time to pull the plug.

I'll also add that these past months have been an interesting period for an idol fan in that I have been able to witness both UFA and AKS pulling out all the stops to promote their latest singles, almost back to back. And while signing in for a mutual partnership with Yomiuri Giants, the extensive advertising on newspapers and the pre-release short concerts paid AKB48 off by netting them 140k copies (something unheard of since the days of Koi no Victory), nothing noteworthy came of Morning Musume's likewise money-intensive campaign project to pitch theirs in the way we all know.

Regardless of what you want to make of it there's no if and but about the results, especially on a popularity scale. To all intents and purposes they were playing on a level field this time around and MM even had the advantage of being an enstabilished household name.
I expect at least one of you to pop out to write off Musume's campaign as a trifling matter just because it didn't pan out well, however. As if I haven't seen all the pomp and circumstance surrounding it.

Singling out the election campaign as if Morning Musume fans have always been playing clean can only help you come across as a hypocrite.
By that token I could've chastised UFA for selling three versions of the same single, each with different content. And let's not forget about the fanboys - both in Japan and abroad - that were dead set on purchasing multiple copies only to see their single outsell Ayumi Hamasaki. First of all, with the exception of Music Station, most of the t.v. promos spots are not your big market time slots or shows. And even the Music Station collaboration with the OG's was really more of a sending off for the OG's than it was openly discussing and promoting the new song.
If anything the OG media campaign was never meant to sell the new single but rather remenisce openly.

Good new single, sales holding or slightly the same as the previous single placing it in the top Musume singles over the last couple years. Widespread t.v. ad campaign with lots of good moments, OG campaign which has been an added treat, watching Mari in the tricycle competition, watching the OG's & Ai-Gaki resteraunt special.

I very much doubt that they would ink a deal with a former idol just because they saw pics of her jobless, smoking in a pachinko parlor and felt sorry. They saw that she was talented, not very expensive since they obviously didn't pay Tsunku jackshit to buy her back catalog of music and that she would fit right in with the other pop artists over at Avex.
