Can we admit that the game's economy is a fucking racket, the players are mostly gaifags, and the combat system is completely unintutitive and broken?

This is a really bad MMO.

The combat system is a good idea in theory but complete shit in practice.

Rather than real-time point and click with skills, it's rock paper scissors point and click with an insanely steep difficulty curve and only one means of mob control.

The massive hitboxes make it impossible to do anything but try to time every skill perfectly, which may seem cool at first but becomes horribly frustrating, and it forces you to grind without getting actual benefit out of it, as even the strongest characters get ohe-shotted by mid-tier monsters.

Everything else about the game is good, but the combat is broken.

If it were broken, it would be broken for everyone. Most people are just butthurt they will die in 2 hits(and so will their opponent), instead of having drawn out battles in RO where their sinx hits something 100 times a second for 50damage crits while spamming potions until the creature finally dies later on.

I will further admit some hitboxes on larger enemies are fucked and making them switch aggro so much was a bad design choice though.

But seriously, you might die in two hits, but you can also solo a boss and never take any damage.

Hey there, I'm a long-time player of mabinogi, I've been playing since the first day of open beta, after the FilePlanet exclusive day.

I play Kirisa on the Ruairi server and, recently, the Alexina server.

You're pretty much spot-on, though I very much have to disagree about the combat system. You didn't pay attention to the NPCs during your tutorial newbie time, did you? They literally tell you everything you need to know.

After learning, you're then expected to take the knowledge and apply it during live combat practice against the "trashy" enemies around Tir Chonaill. The game is still quite forgiving at this point; even to newbies. Mistakes are expected; you're still new. It's okay to get knocked-out.

But the most important part is to recognize how you screwed up, and what you can do to avoid that situation in the future.

It's okay to not like the combat system. It really isn't for everyone, and that's perfectly okay. It is certainly not fundamentally broken. (at least, in terms of PvE. PvP is a complete mess.)

And yes, lag can be an issue, but I find that after disabling the Nagle Algorithm, the only "lag" issues I have these days are the times when the servers themselves are lagging so hard that mobs don't spawn in dungeons for up to 10 minutes. I play from East Coast US, and your location will definitely make a difference. I have a friend who plays from Australia and has roughly the same quality of connection as I got.

In any case, the system wasn't designed for any player to sit there and tank without preparing for the attack. It just isn't possible. But getting hit like that is always something to be avoided at all times. On the other hand, in the event you ARE using the Defense skill, along with a shield, and you're still finding yourself dying too fast...well..this isn't a problem with the game. It's a problem with your character. You should not expect to use Defense against a Metal Skeleton (a common mid-level enemy) with Rank F defense and expect negligible damage. It's going to hurt because your character sucks at defending themselves with or without a shield. Damage in this case will range from 50~120, depending on the quality of the hit, whether you have a shield, and if it triggers a critical hit...these are pretty high numbers regardless of how strong your character is.

As for making your character stronger, prior to the Generation 4 update, which introduced a whole lot of nothing to the world (Iria), Rebirthing your character is now free, so long as two conditions are met:

1. It's been at least one week since your last rebirth.
2. Your character is 20 years or older.

This means it's now possible to rebirth once every three weeks. Yes, cash shop players are still significantly more powerful, since they always paid for their rebirths prior to them becoming free. A character levelled 2000+ is not uncommon among the "big 3" servers, Mari, Ruairi, and Tarlach. These players are absurdly powerful...but it is not entirely uncommon to see them tripped up and dying to trash enemies. Some of them are actually really bad players. Some of them are actually really good. Regardless, stop complaining about cash shop and how it artificially makes players stronger than they actually are. It's been beaten to death, and it is true.

In the end, your character's "level" only matters up to a certain point. Once past this point, it no longer matters as far as making yourself an effective player goes.

These days, there are a LOT of players who are convinced (either from their own experience, or from another player) that spamming windmill is the only way to go.

It couldn't be farther from the truth. Anyone who knows me in the game will tell you that I very strongly disapprove of spinning in circles, killing everything.

It has some strong points; it hits many enemies, it has a large number of invulnerability frames, it does good damage....In short, it makes short work of groups of even the strongest monsters.

But it does not make you a good player. If anything, it makes you worse, as you're no longer thinking your way out of situations, and instead spamming the same thing over and over again. It promotes poor play, but promises inhuman killing speeds and large quantities of experience (A windmill-spamming player can solo the toughest dungeons with relative ease).

I literally can't do it. Even if I were given the skills necessary (Rank 5 or better Windmill; I actually have Rank 9, but I have Rank 9 pretty much everything), I cannot physically bring myself to do those actions without getting myself killed. The downsides to spamming Windmill...it makes you really easy to kill. You'll end up aggroing an entire room, you cannot take ANY hit without dying, and you're committed to it until the area is clear. It means you're never going to be at full power; you hurt yourself by 10% every time you use the skill. It's a vicious, but powerful, cycle of death for both parties.

So I play the "old-fashioned way"...the same way EVERYONE played back during Beta, the way EVERYONE played during Generations 1 & 2. I play with Magic and Melee, and combining those two, I am effective in combat with little to no risk to myself. While I'm not perfect (far from it), I do not get hit without being prepared often, and usually only when I pull more than one enemy. These situations are indeed very dangerous; but not impossible, to cope with.

As far as the differences between Melee Magic and Archery go...Melee has the advantage in PvE; melee attacks never miss. Melee also works very well with magic skills, provided you take the time to learn how to implement them into your fighting style.

Archery, on the other hand, is foreign to me. I know very little about it, aside from it takes arrows, a bow, and it takes time to "aim" your shot (which can miss). Higher "Ranged Attack" rank means you aim faster. Despite the glaring weaknesses, Archery has been the king of PvP since the early days. A well-played Archer is untouchable, and remains so today, even with the Assault skill.

In summary, the combat system is not unintuitive and broken. It just takes time to learn, and more time to master. Think of it more like a slow-paced action game than an MMO. It is significantly more rewarding and more fun to play than almost any other MMO out there, since you control what happens in a given encounter.

You don't HAVE to fight at all, really. You could just dick around with your friends, play music, build up a character with nothing but life skills. You will level very slowly (lifeskills do not equal much exp), but if you enjoy that more than combat, it's well worth your effort.

That's all I got. I'll answer some questions if you aren't ready to run me off yet.

Not really. There's hardly any reward other than the knowledge of how much of your life you wasted to make virtual items in a server that won't last forever.

Sure, people can donate money while you play music if you really consider that a reward, but there never has been and never will be an MMO that doesn't revolve around combat; you can DO things without it but not anywhere near enough to achieve the maximum experience the game has to offer. If you don't kill shit you'll never get to go through the generation quests, you'll never get even the lifeskill equips from running dungeons, and every time a mob just happens to aggro on you between towns, enjoy your walk back. There's hardly enough benefit to non-combat skills to make a pure worth playing.

Since you're actually saying this, I can say with confidence that you didn't play an archer. I did it, and boy does that come and bite you in the ass later on. G1 with the zombies who can only be hurt effectively by WM (remember, this is when G1 was new) and then again in G3 with the infiltration and no magic whatsoever. Haha, fuck me.

It basically revolves around stunlocking mobs with icebolt (or later on lightning bolt). For most enemies you can time it just right and they'll never get knocked back. For ones with magic resistance (I forget what the skill was called, mana reflector?) you might have to switch from the light-weight icebolt to firebolt and nuke away. Eventually it becomes better to replace your icebolt with lightning bolt, which at higher ranks has the same charge speed as icebolt but with much, much higher damage provided you have a decent chunk of int.

Then you get into advanced magic... great for soloing ciar advanced but it's costly. You will be chugging mana potions left and right (by the way, mana potions are the only potions NPCs don't sell so you'll be buying them from the jews in the market or farming mana herbs and making them yourself).

But even with all the bitching about the magic related combat system, I had some fun times with Hotglue. MMOs are best when played with good company, and I'd like to think Hotglue was good company early on.

And of course, dressup was always the best part of Mabinogi.

I suppose you're right. But my point is still clear; you really don't have to fight if you don't want to. Not everyone has to be "the One who Saved the Goddess" or "the Savior of Erinn" or other such noteworthy beings. Yes, you will be weak. Yes, you'll be a terrible fighter. But like I said; if you enjoy those things, and don't enjoy combat, then you don't really have a reason to complain. Life-skill players are gimps in combat, they're instead the social and economic butterflies; if they can't get materials themselves, they can hire another player to do it for them, benefitting both parties (or not, as the lol player economy is fucked to high hell).

Furthermore, you should never get attacked going from point A to point B; a field mob will not aggro you unless you're hanging around close to it. The only time where that's an acceptable excuse are the rare times between Dunbarton and Emain Macha, when the Mini Bear field boss spawns in Osna Sail, with his mob of Sheep Wolves that aggro you in about a second. Otherwise, you never even have to touch combat if you choose not to. It's a choice, friend.

As far as GRINDANogi...well...hit the poles outside of the Tir Chonaill school for a while for an easter egg. Greed only leads to more grinding, and it's what inspired me to keep playing the way I do; so I can laugh at all the players who do nothing but pride themselves on being the best LIKE NO ONE EVER WAS. I'm not going to disagree that the community is terrible+1.

I also play good music from assorted vidya gaems, that I either made myself, or transcribed/edited for quality myself. Also original songs.

That was what I had in mind when I said it, at least. I won't disagree that it doesn't happen too often though. Just the whole feeling of helplessness that comes from being killed like that before you know what happened just because you CHOSE to neglect the ability to defend yourself is enough to discourage lifeskill-only play.

On top of that is the fact that if you choose to go that way, at the beginning you'll hardly get any AP. If you hardly level up or just don't at all, the only time you'll get AP is from aging so you'll have to WAIT for weeks on end to be able to do anything. Meaning you won't be having much fun since the only options you have are to wait - as in not play it at all until Saturday - or go engage in - guess what? - COMBAT. If you're going to pride yourself on not killing mobs at all or whatever then you'll not even be playing at all. After a few weeks of endurance you'll be able to log on and play some music, make clothes or whatever, but ultimately consistently playing it isn't something that's going to happen without combat, unless you just idle in towns but in that case it's less of you playing an MMO so much as a chatroom.

My point here is that combat isn't forced down your throat, but neither is playing at all. The two go together. Maybe someday there may be a grindfest with a huge amount of non-combat minigames that are actually rewarding, but Mabinogi isn't it.

Sort of both; equips all have DEF ratings and such and you can't wear robes over armors like you could in Mabi. So if you're a tank, you'll probably be wanting to wear armor in actual combat. Caster gears aren't much better than costumes like the meido outfit and various others so it really doesn't matter too much what you're wearing.

The possession system is the main factor why you're not going to need fancy armors, since you can just go inside someone else's equipment and significantly minimize the damage you take. Plus, if you get a shaman or two to possess you and just run around near mobs you won't have to worry about being hit at all, so you can just wear whatever the hell you want.

There are equips by level that give you better stats and such but ECO's more lenient on it than most other MMOs since the thing most likely to kill you in PvE is lag. In CB there was a giveaway of this godawful-looking armor and everybody wore it so there was no fashion originality, but from the stuff I've seen sold in towns and the modelviewer I can say I'm pretty sure there's a big variety in clothing.

tl;dr armors are better than clothes but it doesn't really matter since there's not a big gap in the numbers. Unless you're an elitist.

>Apart from the better than wow pvp, ( pvpve isn't all it's cracked up to be ) with badly balanced classes ( the second best healer class is hailed as the main healer of the game, as the healing prioritiser is overkill. ), dps classes can be ranked easily and all pve is essentially tank and spank.

Since this game seems to have a pretty large PvP focus I hope to dear god by the time it goes out live the classes are pretty balanced and overall content is pretty polished. If the game itself isn't decently polished all the way until endgame I have no real reason to even bother playing. I've played a lot of mmo's, and spotting the cancer which will lead to a game's downfall is not hard.

Well, that's true, but if you're actually going to PLAY it you're forced to spend months building up your character whether you like it or not. After about 20 or so levels levelling turns into grind, and after a little while of that grind takes the plunge into impossible. With AP rewards gradually decreasing with age and only 1 AP per level which has become impossible to get to without new skills, you pretty much have to either give Nexon money or wait it out. And even if you do a paid rebirth, it's still WAITAN GAEMS. That's all I meant.

Also,
>You can get a moderate idea of how the game plays in a matter of days, to see whether you'd like it or not.

Bad idea. Doing that these days shows you nothing but botswarms and Naruto music spammers. Shit's shit. The mechanics are actually enjoyable I'd admit, but the horrific community outweighs the fun you'd otherwise be having now.

If you're actually playing the game, character build-up comes naturally.

If you're just trying out the game, you don't need to spend more than a week playing it to get a good idea of how the game plays. If you like it, you would continue playing.

That's pretty much exactly what I was saying. There's no need to commit more time into playing a game you're not liking, there's simply no logic or reason in that...and you can figure out whether or not you'd like the game after a matter of days with it.

You don't NEED to have a billion levels to figure out if you like the game; you just need to spend a little bit of time doing the tutorial quests, and play in a few dungeons with people. Sitting in town (musicspammers) or on the very outskirts (bots) is not playing the game.

>Sitting in town (musicspammers) or on the very outskirts (bots) is not playing the game.

I don't mean actually being around them so much as encountering them in general; seeing the starting area filled with bots isn't going to help the player start out with a positive outlook on the community, and when they go into town and hear Naruto/Bleach music it's probably not going to help things along unless they're a potential Naruspammer themselves.

>There's no need to commit more time into playing a game you're not liking
My point is, that doesn't just apply to the gameplay. The shit community is more than enough to drive players away now, and it's to the point where it's obscuring the otherwise good gameplay mechanics. While ECO had a bunch of stupid people at least they weren't throwing it in your face by replacing your background music with the same shit. There's also the general Gaiafaggotry and the fact that if you plan on doing the generation quests you're eventually going to HAVE to ask for their help for the, what was it, ideals?

You are the WORST kind of player; yeah, you're the smug little fucktard who just can't WAIT to be first goddamned person on a server to get some achievement so you can enter a dick-waving contest with other players, holding your title or piece of equipment above their heads like it makes you better than them somehow.

>but it's still not playable consistently unless you have at lesat rank 9 everything

Exagerration doesn't work on /jp/ now? Well okay, here you go. My point was more along the lines of it's not very fun to play if you can't kill anything, bro. Running into dungeons with rank F skills and dying hundreds of times is futile compared to just waiting a few weeks until you can actually hold you own. In fact, the example you just described was pretty much the whole server in Mari and 95% of the reason I stopped playing it.

Poor Mabi suffered from the same flaws as Runescape: you CAN grind with other players, but it's really not required or even encouraged most of the time. You can play it by soloing, but first you're going to have to put forth the time to get to a point where you actually can solo. But I think I'll go ahead and say something ridiculous just because I want to keep a debate going.

Paladins are overrated.

>> No.3120229

>>3120189
That's still incorrect. You can still be an effective fighter even with Rank F everything; you'll just be weak, and things will take a while if you're alone. You make it sound like it's completely impossible to do anything without ranking up your skills. That just makes it easier.

Hell, I could kill Golems at Ceo Island at total level 20. It took me quite some time, but killing them was not out of the question. It's dependent on your ability as a player, not the strength you gain from levelling up or having absurdly powerful skills.

In Mabinogi, you have to walk before you can run. Once you know how things work, you can manage some impressive things even as a low-level character.

I'm in Rabbie Basic getting my Experienced title right now, on current/total level 43 actually. Got my Golden Egg and everything, and I've just entered floor 3. There are ways to cheese this title (for example, putting the egg on a pet/in bank+remote bank coupon and putting it in your inventory at the boss door), but I prefer doing it the real way because I don't suck at the game like over 90% of the community.

True as that may be, I'm not talking about playability in general here; I'm talking about FUN. If there's anybody who seriously gets enjoyment out of spending hours to do something that would take anybody else five minutes, most of that time being spent on respawning and walking back with an almost empty lifebar due to wounds just to be killed again, speak up now.

Being underlevelled for a challenge is one thing, but going through a dungeon that's moderately difficult for decent-levelled parties - say, Math - at level 1 with all rank F skills is just plain stupid. Even suggesting that you have the MAD SKILLZ to do that in the first place just boils back down to the whole fancy achievement dickwaving contest. Bragging rights are all you'll get out of having 'skill' just like bragging rights are all you'll get by spending stupid amounts of time grindan every actual skill.

Of course, I have a pretty valid reason to whine about 'skill' and timing since I played an archer and never bothered going through that process to remove the lag. ;_;

OP here; for the record, that last rant was the product of an absolutely *terrible* Math run, combined with getting scammed out of a rare armor.

I've been playing Mabi since G1, though I didn't play all that much then. It *has* been fun and enjoyable at times, and I pretty much like everything else about the game - the presentation, the character development, musicspamming is fun, believe it or not, but there's just too much grind worked into every single aspect of the game, and being severely punished for every combat mistake you make is really frustrating, and a severe DETRIMENT to learning the game.

The only way to overcome this is partying, and obviously we know that 95% of the userbase are 13 year old little shits who jumped over from Maple Story and Runescape.

Yes, I know "lern2play", but not all "lernin2play" is created equal, and being killed by kobold mobs because of a single strategic mistake gets frustrating after a while.

Also, the "lol windmill everything!!11!!!" people are fucking retards. Yeah you'll clear a room, but good luck dealing with multi-aggro, which is literally instant death unless you're amazing or have a party ready to back you up.

You get prefix titles for skills for ranks 1st dan and 3rd dan, but you need to take this one advancement arena exam that requires you to have a rank 1 skill and there have to be at least 3 other applicants in the same skill and you have to outscore the others to actually be awarded dan exp. 3 applicants only has 1 winner, 4 has 2, 5 has 2, 6 has 3 and 6 is the max. I don't quite get the hate about the combat system. Monsters have different brands of AI that have them attacking different ways. Some are dumb and just rush you, others change their tactics based on what you've hit them with, others circle around you, others keep their distance, still more try and get you to walk into set up windmills or counter attacks. And more.

Your side of it is knowing when to counter, defend, attack, use a spell etc. Which spell is important, sometimes you want to piss a monster off and make them rush you and many monsters get pissed off by a single icebolt so you can use that then set up a defense or counter. Windmill is the only ability that throws this all off. On one hand melee did need an AoE. On the other hand windmill, especially at its highest levels, is just plain overpowering.

Other abilities introduced like the shield charge, magical defense shields, and even final strike all factor into the above. Outside of Windmill it's an intricate system that requires you to learn the attack patterns of different mobs and respond accordingly. It doesn't even require the usual trinity of healer/dps/tank because healing isn't required and you don't really tank in the traditional sense. Everyone's going to get hit at some point, so everyone has to figure out how to deal with damage, and everyone needs damage.

So there's really just pseudo-tank and DPS rolls with the ability to self heal through spells or potions.

Besides Windmill, the only truly messed up thing in the game, is the issue with lag. And the issue with lag isn't an issue with mabi, it's an issue with western connections being BEHIND THE TIMES. You can't blame Mabi for our connections not being updated to sensible levels of speed. More than that there are several lag fixes, that require absolute MINIMUM know how of computers. These lag fixes work for most people, and for my connection (8000dl/800ul) it put things exactly where they needed to be.

So I just don't understand the hate about the combat. I understand the hate about its community and game economy being behind... but I don't fucking get the hate on the combat system. Is it perfect? No. Is it a hell of a lot better or at least more creative than the same bullshit we get from every WoW clone out there? YES.

I think the problem is how the game uses space.

To me, no matter where you fight, your options do not fundamentally differ from the options you would happen in a narrow room with the door locked on both sides. Once a monster aggros you, you can't run, you can't easily evade the monster's run, you just hope you can get the right skill loaded at the right time.

Also, while ranking up life skills may be good in the long run, the grind is even more horrendous, and eventually, you need to fight a little bit to get to say, mining areas (Barri, etc).

It's pretty easy to underestimate knowing the whole dungeon layout beforehand or knowing where every single mimic, lost elf, artifact, dedication stone, and face changing statue, along with their times are. Being able to see your combat power and compare it to a monster's can come in handy when you want to try and figure out when something will be weakest/weak/normal/strong/awful/boss. Even being able to zoom out more helps out drastically since you're able to see more. One of the greater things is the bitmap font. Normally foreign versions use bitmap font, but for whatever stupidfuck reason, Nexon America tried to use some laggy as vector font, so if you have the bitmap font like normal your char/chat/skill windows won't lag at all.

Metallurgy really helps a lot with refining now. In fact, there are several mods that make metallurgy even easier: Purple Unknown Fragments (normally same color as iron so it's confusing) and Turquoise Mythril Fragments/Ores/Ingots/Bars (Normally they're the same color as gold) and finally names over metallurgy spots, since normally they're invisible, but a simple propdb.xml edit fixes that.

You can run. Elves can run. Humans are slower, but use of something like a quick icebolt stun (why would you have trouble loading that in time?) allows for more freedom of movement on some monsters. Now, there are mobs you can't stun or on whom magic won't work, but then you have other skills to help you move around. And even a magic immune monster will be knocked back by a firebolt giving you some space.

I don't know why you'd have trouble with charge time. There are lag fixes that remove lag time so you charge faster, and upping the skills makes them charge faster too. You should be just fine. And that's just magic. You have plenty of skills to get some room with. Windmill is a great way to make some quick room to breathe, countering will knock an enemy back (counter then defend and move back away as defense loads in - defense should charge in time and after a windmill they aren't likely to smash and there's breathing room besides).

The only thing I'd agree on is the lifeskills. They were the only thing in the whole game I actually considered a grind. I've heard people talk about grinding levels or skills in Mabi and it confused the hell out of me. I've never seen a MMOgame where levels mattered so little. Some skills at their max may take some time but it was never anything that everyday play didn't cover save for the maxed r1 of things like Windmill, and other advance skills which you never actually "NEED" at r1 - it's just nice.

I hate when people use "creativity" as an argument point. Creativity does not automatically mean it works.
But it does work...

It's creative and it works. So what's the problem?

And how is it frustrating? The two worst things about the combat system are lag (which is not mabi's fault, it's the fault of western connections being way behind the times) and the other thing is windmill being "too" useful so as to be nearly overpowered (and not in the traditional sense more as it's one of those skills that's so useful everyone has to have it because it's just so useful so many places - I view it as the only truly unabalancing factor because it exceeds the usefulness and power of many Advanced skills but has nothing remotely close to the cost of them, fireball for example has a huge charge time and massive mana cost to counteract its AoE knockback and its huge damage).

Windmill is the only real issue for me, since, after applying lag fixes, I no longer have lag issues unless it's one of those times when something's truly up with one of mabi's servers. And then they get around to fixing it. It might not get fixed right away but they fix it regardless.

>>I simply do not believe a game should EVER have a 3-6 month learning curve to get to an average level.
Well it doesn't so.......? I can solo most dungeons (within limitation) right now. It only took me a couple of weeks when I started out to get to that point. Mind the dungeons then were much simpler than now but I was soloing dungeons then. And now that there are harder dungeon i can still solo the new ones that a person can reasonably solo. I meant you can only rebirth to 17 as the MAX age, you can always rebirth from either 10 to 17. You'd just want to rebirth to 17 if you were using free rebirths just so you'd only have to wait 3 weeks until you could rebirth again. Age ups occur at Noon PST on Saturdays always, regardless of whether you're on at the time or not. You have to relog/change channel to actually age up if you are on at the time though.

Personally, since I can rebirth weekly I rebirth to age 11 (Age 11 is more dex per level and I'm mainly a ranger, plus it's still 5 ap from age up on saturday), although age 10 does have better luck bonuses per level.

Multiaggro is what Windmill is for. There are other ways. As a pure mage I dealt with it by getting the lag fixes and high ranked spells that just made me very very very fast. People used to be amazed t how fast until the larger portion of the community finally figured out how to apply the lag fixes for themselves. That was before I started on melee skills though. Windmill is much more efficient for multi-aggro and while I had few deaths prior I now hardly ever experience anything resembling death.

Windmill is bread and butter for multi aggro. Trust me, this game doesn't throw "anything" at you that there's not some skill that allows you to deal with it somehow. And then you have to apply the tactic and timing properly.

>Really, the fact you can rebirth could make Mabinogi pretty much one of the most ungrindable games ever in existence.

That all depends on how you define grind. Grind really isn't the act of killing mobs over and over so much as it is the act of constantly repeating a single task to achieve something. In Mabi, probably the best way to get AP is by rebirthing to age 10 and waiting.

THEREFORE, you can grind by not playing, which is repeatedly performing the task of refusing to log on.
Mabinogi is the most grind MMO in existence.

Ogres are easy mode. That's just firebolt+counter/defense/move back directly after firebolt for one second then hit the defense or counter as is applicable. Windmill isn't needed for ogres at all unless you're fighting more than one at once. Though it is fun to play tennis using windmill with the ogres.

The reason you're charging is due to the queue system. Stop over clicking. You may not even realizing you're doing it. The queue system registers multiple clicks as attacks and will then try and apply that many attacks after a firebolt. Sometimes if the server is lagging (or you are lagging) it can register a single click an extra time or two but lag fixes should fix your end of it and the server does not lag all the time, in fact I haven't seen server lag in over a month.

I have no idea why you'd have trouble with Goblins. This is why I said what I said. If you're having trouble with Ciar Normal, of all things, it just makes no sense. This is the second simplest Dungeon in the game. I had that place down by my second week and I didn't even have Windmill trained back then. I think I'd trained meditation Ice Bolt Firebolt Magic Mastery and Ligthning bolt, and nothing else, the first time I ever beat Ciar. I have many more skills now, and it's far easier the way I currently do it (one shot everything in every room with windmill, and fireball the boss room) but all the way back then with no AoE at all (because I didn't and still don't tend to use lightning bolt's aoe capability with multicharge) I still managed it.

Not playing and waiting is pretty softcore "grind"ing to me and that would take a long ass time if you didn't level at all during all that since the AP from age bonuses isn't that high or fast. I was thinking more along the lines of not having to kill as much as other games in order to level up as being what makes it less grindtastic. I prefer lightning bolt myself but icebolt is more useful for most melee characters due to being cheape (I started out at a mage).

This is the basic idea of it. Charge 1 icebolt. Enter room. Maybe there's a chest, so you open chest and quickly run to a corner (if you can't get to a corner before thing aggro you you're an idiot) that is least occupied. Find the closest target that might aggro. Icebolt him and draw him to you. Set up a defense or counter as you prefer and start the defense/counter cycle of killing it.

Later 1 handed will be better if you dual wield, but early on two handers are great. Here's why: N+1. N+1 is a combo in which you time for your first swing, so that you don't use the second swing your weapon would usually go into. instead you wait, just enough time, for the swing to end, but not enough time for the mob to attack. Then you do the full combo of 1 attack and 2 attack. This turns a 2 hit weapon into a three hit weapon.

To add to this, the defense/counter cycle WILL NOT work on certain mods, such as those with a spell or with a ranged attack like a bow or crossbow. This is why you keep Icebolt in your pocket. You get it high enough to charge quickly. One icebolt hit usually causes a monster to charge you (though some react to stuns differently, you need to learn this). I have icebolt at r1 these days, but before the rank limit was removed it was only rank 6. The thing it even at a veyr low rank it's useful in this way.

If something is about to range you, you charge icebolt to stop it and try and get it to charge into your counter or defense.

>> No.3121129

>not having to kill as much as other games in order to level up

... Because you can get high enough level skills to kill mobs more easily just by waiting to get more AP. On top of that you always start at level 1 after rebirthing and exp rates don't decrease (or at least not that I know of) so you always have an easy 1 AP per level for the next 10-20 levels even if you're only online for a couple hours. You don't have to do very much to get shit done if you do it right.

>Like at least you actually see results unlike Maplestory or something where you have to kill for a couple weeks just to see some improvement in the form of a level...

But goddamn I agree with this. Then again, you still spend a similar amount of time by the waiting method, it just doesn't expend as much effort.

I would also like to say I like the fact that I've only ever worn clothes and never used armor and I can do well simply because most of Mabinogi combat relies on you not getting hit, even if you do hopefully you go into deadly status, which is pretty likely. You do have to worry about damage or crit enchant though. I do hate the fact that you couldn't really have "tanker's" or "healers" or some kind of support class in the game though.

You ever play progressquest?

Why is it even a problem though? I remember easily getting high levels through just lazy play over the course of the old three week waiting period on rebirths. Getting to the 30-40 level range gets you that much ap over three weeks plus whatever you got from waiting for age ups that provided ap. Using that method you should get plenty of ap with very little effort. I never found it to be much effort and I didnt used to have all that much time to play at all so it isnt even a huge time investment.

Armor Does help mind you. I've seen people take hits from the Gen 3 Dragon and barely get scratched with high ranks of defense + full armor. Armor can be useful. I won't say you "need" armor because you're right, it relies mostly on you. You never need the armor if you've got your tactics down enough to rarely get hit. So just the same I've seen people take down that same Dragon without ever getting scratched.

Personally I make a campfire, load my r5 fireball, and wait for the Dragon to fail charge. Then let loose.

At what point did that appear and if it was later, how much time was it until after you logged in onto your character?

That, uh, was what I was saying. I don't remember saying it was a problem, did I? All I said was that it takes less effort than other MMOs to get to high levels; just time. So there's really not much to pride yourself on for getting rank 1 skills and level 2000+, since anyone can do it.

Want to grind a bunch of mobs for AP? Go for it.
Want to wait weeks until you get AP without doing anything? Sure, why not.
Want do do both? Nobody's going to stop you.

I never really said it was bad, I'm more or less complaining just to be complaining. The longer it keeps a discussion going, the better. Speaking of which I think we'll need a new thread soon.

But honestly I haven't played it, though by the way I play Mabi I might as well have.
