I always liked how animated rain tanked the framerate. It was a bit uncomfortable, but it also helped with the atmosphere because that uncomfortable feeling is similar to being in the middle of the rain getting soaked. Also, seeing the raindrops actually fall is undeniably more immersive. Especially in the first four arcs, where the unsettling atmosphere of the island is really important.

Static raindrops and no framerate issues make the rain feel inconsequential and have no impact. You'd barely even notice if wasn't for the sound effects.

Those sprites were designed for the console versions, which were censored as fuck and removed parts of the story (especially in Higurashi). Why would Ryuukishi care about them fucking up Maria, fucking up the man from 19 years ago or ruining Lambda's design? Those are all changes they were forced to make to be consistent with DEEN's crap.

Ryuukishi didn't say anything about those bad changes because they were intended for a shitty console release with tons of censorship, so who cares about any of that when the core text is already bastardized? He certainly didn't expect his supposed "fans" to use those sprites in his original VN, making his neglect actually harmful because now they are fucking up his novel and not some censored lesser version of it.

This is what I always say. The sprite on the right is ambiguous and can be used to portray many different emotions. And Ryuukishi does just that, he uses it for when Maria screaming at someone but also when she's simply protesting about some unimportant thing.

When you simply swap all instances of that sprite with its exaggerated PS3 version, the sprite seems WAY too over the top and jarring in calmer scenes where the original didn't seem out of place.

This happens all the fucking time in Higurashi. Those sprites and their original usage rely a lot on ambiguous expressions being reused for different purposes. When you exaggerate the shit out of them for an early scene, they become jarring and unfitting in later scenes. For example, Rena's blushing face. The original is ambiguous enough to work as Rena blushing after hearing a lewd joke, Rena blushing because Keiichi said something romantic, Rena feverish because she's losing her mind, etc. The "updated" sprites are made without thinking about those other uses, so when you see Rena blushing in an exaggerated way that only works for actual blushing, it makes it look weird and out of place in her feverish scenes in arc 6.

This happens with many other characters and sprites, especially in Higurashi. It's all over the place and it's a major problem that harms the experience significantly, even if PS3fags and Steamfags have no idea what they are missing out on and still enjoy story. You can tell they are feeling a bit of cringe in places where the original looked perfectly fine.

Ryuukishi wrote the scenes and chose the facial expressions with his sprites in mind. He thought "hmm, I need to make Rena look like she has a fever, and thankfully I have this early blushing sprite lying around that works perfectly here".

The PS3 artists simply recreated the sprites in their own style without thinking about that. It was a 1:1 swap without consideration for the changes in ambiguity and subtlety that could make the sprites NOT work perfectly anymore in the same scenes.

Ryuukishi chose to use the same sprite for different purposes because the sprite had that kind of ambiguity. You can't just redraw the whole thing in your own style and expect it to remain as ambiguous as before. Especially if you actually exaggerated the fuck out of it.

They also take you out of the scene Ryuukishi described in the text. Remember when Rika is lying there dead and she looks up and sees the ghosts of her friends looking down at her? EXACTLY when this like is on screen, the console version shows a CG of their ghosts (looking nothing like ghosts, btw) which has RIKA in it, seemingly looking at the screen because we are seeing this from Hanyuu's point of view and she's telling her to join. This would all be fine if the fucking CG didn't appear right when RIKA is dead on the ground and looks up to see them.

They took a CG that portrays a scene that happens five minutes later, when they invite Hanyuu to join after Rika has regained hope, and they put the fucking thing in a place that makes no sense, with several lines on-screen directly contradicting it, simply becayse it's a CG that shows the ghosts without caring about anything else.

You can't defend this shit. It takes you out of the immersion, contradicts the text and prevents you from imagining the scene described because a totally different image is forcing itself on you. An image that isn't supposed to take place until five minutes later.
