So I've seen some other people posting their 7 months progress and I thought that I would do the same.

I have been following the Refold/MIA/AJATT/Antimoon (whatever you want to call it) method for my language acquisition journey. For people who are not familiar with immersion learning methods this essentially means that I have entirely focused on comprehending native material (reading and listening) and have not worked at all on speaking or writing.

I grinded a lot of Anki in my first 3 months (especially the first month) and went through the following beginner material: Kana, Recognition RTK deck, Tango N5 deck, Tango N4 deck, Tae Kim's Grammar Guide, The Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar, and the Tango N3 deck.

I do think it is important to note that I never did any grammar drills and instead only used the resources to mine the example sentences and put explanations on the back of my Anki cards. Having said that, I do think that going through the DoBJG was helpful for laying a foundation of knowledge and was extremely helpful to consolidate a lot of the material in Tae Kim.

Since then I have not used any premade decks and have just been sentence mining from my immersion. I went through the monolingual transition gradually while finishing the Tango N3 deck (2k to 3k sentence cards) and I found that after about 2 months of regularly using the monolingual dictionary and making monolingual cards when I could I was able to virtually have all of my cards be monolingual since then.

Anki Stats: currently I have ~5000 sentence cards and I am adding 15-20 new cards every day (upped recently from 10). About 2000 of these are monolingual sentence cards. My retention rate for my sentence deck is 88%, average time per card is ~20-25s. Generally Anki takes about 60 minutes every day right now but I think that this will grow to 75-80 within the coming weeks due to upping the amount of new cards per day.</wbr></wbr>

it's not particularly difficult and it doesn't have many obscure kanjis whatsoever, it's mostly normal japanese
it has 1-2 sections where if you want to fully understand it you need to know some classical japanese, but mostly it's at a level where if you can watch anime you can read muramasa
it's actually pretty easy to understand in terms of plot and the scenes are extremely descriptive so it's hard to miss things, it's not a weird vn like subahibi

i'm reading on my kindle and there is an interesting flashcard function with it that i am using
it's different from anki in the sense that you can just mark something as learned and never see it again, it adds everything that you are looking up which is nice
so what i do to pass something is, i read and look shit up, and on a later day when i see the card, i will see if i can form a sentence with the word on the card and if i can i put it away, no srs nothing and while the learning effect of course is less doing srs is only good for very specific information that you need to remember rather than skill building and language skill building for which this kind of approach is better, of course for japanese i still think srs is the best way to boost your reading ability and increase passive vocab, but i wouldn't use it for any other language only making use of this srs light recall approach i described above
