3075629 No.3075629 [Reply] [Original]

It may not make it into the history books, but it'll probably be mildly exciting to see it happen.

Zoom

In just a few minutes, the time will be 12:34:56 and the date will be 07/08/09.* This is only going to happen once so we figure it's news worthy enough to make the site on a slow Friday.

So, what are/were you doing when the clocks read 123456789? Let us know in the comments section below! If you missed it, well, don't worry, you didn't miss much. Just the time really.

Screenshots at the ready, everyone . . .

*Note: We're going by ET here, so if you're in another time zone where this hasn't happened yet, consider this article a sticky note. Set your alarms now!

One of the worst things about imperial in physics is the fact that kilograms and pounds are NOT equivalent units; kilograms = mass, while pounds = weight (i.e. force due to gravity). Pounds are thus comparable to newtons, and there's some other unit I can't even remember the name of that's the imperial unit for mass.

Of course the difference between mass and weight doesn't really matter as long as you stay in Earth's gravity; so like I said, imperial is fine for everyday use, but attempting to do any scientific calculations with it is a joke.

What. Mass is different from "weight," which is an observable effect of the attraction between two general masses.

Weight is going to be exceedingly different depending on the gravitational attraction you are experiencing, and therefore is not constant. Mass is constant, and thus is a measure of the object.

Something on Earth will weigh less on the Moon. This is elementary.

>> No.3075950

>>3075832
No, even though the units of measurement are different, they remain consistent values. Okay, except for barrels. And the nature of the item you're measuring. And all that crud from back in the day when the imperial units were all based on measurements taken of the king, and thus changed and had to be updated every time the crown was passed on, or were based on measurements of your own body, and thus changed from person to person. Still, for every SI unit of measure, there's an equivalent unit in Imperial (or American, there are plenty of difference between the two systems and SI, and it gives me headaches), so you can remain completely within whichever system you're using. Converting between them uses simple multiplication by constant conversion values.

>>"This shit is 234 pounds and is 323oz tell us the density?"
That's not enough information to find the density. Pounds and ounces are both units of weight (1 pound = 16 ounces). Still, it's easy enough if I assume you meant 323 ft³. 234lb/323ft³ = ~0.724 lb/ft³. It's still just taking weight and dividing by volume, nothing special needs to be done to calculate so long as you keep your units properly noted. As long as you have the units listed, if a conversion does need to be done, it can be.

Fun fact: Pounds existed before we discovered gravity, thus, it had originally been a unit of weight. Once it was known that weight was a result of gravitational attraction between objects, the pound was quickly redefined to be a proper unit of mass.

I screwed up in >>3075950

>> No.3075988

ounces are also a unit of volume, as well as a unit of weight.

And simple calculations like this example of density are fine because the imperial system just uses a unit that consists of the units being divided or multiplied (like newton-meters vs. foot-pounds for torque).

The problems are:
1) when you have to switch between units where the imperial system doesn't have a simple conversion.... All SI units on the other hand can be converted without having to mess with constants that have to be memorized; for example a liter is just a cubic decimeter, while a gallon doesn't have any neat relation to the cube of the imperial length units.

2) when the calculations involve addition and subtraction... in particular anything that uses temperature MUST be converted to Kelvin because it doesn't have a proportionate relation to Fahrenheit (or Celsius either)

You're thinking of the fluid ounce (fl oz). Yes, it's retarded to have the same name used in blatantly different measurements, but they are differentiated.

That last bit about Kelvin reminded me that sooner or later, yet another shift will happen in the measuring systems that will be even larger than the adoption of SI. We've finally been able to pin down a few of the "absolute" values, such as absolute zero for temperature. We're getting close to finding out the minimum values for the passage of time (which is the interval at which change can be observed. A shorter time wouldn't have any change, and thus debatably couldn't exist), and of mass. If we can pin down enough of these, a number of the constants (actually kludge factors) used in physics should, theoretically, vanish. At that point, a system of measurement can be adopted that will be as close to perfect as you can get, as it would be based upon the fundamental properties of matter. Even SI had to kludge and use the Earth as the basis of its units of measure (one meter = one ten-millionth of the distance from the Equator to the North Pole).
