Okada wrote the book on "otaku" he and his ex-buddies at Gainax are basically responsible for the word as far as I'm concerned.

So if anyone comes up with a degree he'll be giving them out. A little late I think, on this Okada agrees: there is no otaku culture now; everybody goes after their own thing. We have no "nationalism"; we're like a bunch of tiny neighboring rival tribes often fighting with one another over dfc/bfc, /a///jp/, primary/secondary fans, touhoufags/kyoanifags, what have you.
