I think its going to be a hard thing to deal with. You can't have people just going into VR machines, even if they hooked everything up so you could just sit in one until you die there would still be stuff on the outside other people would have to deal with.

Then there will be cases of people dying because of malfunctions, and probably people getting killed by people outside of the machines for their money or they consider them worthless.

And national defense, I mean all social contracts break if basically someone wants to spend life in a pod.

The people who would be liable to do this, guess what, ALREADY DO IT. You're posting on a board filled with them.

So yeah, I'm 2/5ths through Snow Crash. I don't really expect to see perfect simulation in my lifetime. But I'm already living as close to it as I can. Escapism + online communication + solitary study and contemplation. This is living.

Now I'm going to speculate. Tl;dr warning here. Computer technology will directly interface with our brains, that's a given. A particular set of mental faculties that the ultimate sim tech will leverage are those associated with dreaming. Consider the ability to dream up completely immersive, more-vivid-than-reality scenery. Far beyond the 'photorealism' attempts of videogames. But, to my knowledge, there's no need for the brain to render the scene down to all the fine details. As far as I can tell, you just experience a feeling of realness, and details only need to be generated if and when you choose to closely examine them. And they're made up of recombined bits and pieces of recalled real life sensations and percepts.

So the main challenge is to find a way to artificially control this. Lucid dreamers will know that natural techniques are currently quite workable. The separate computer component is essential. Because lucid dreaming is (or can be) ultimate freedom, while games are defined by restrictions (rules). For persistent/online spaces, a coherent objective description of things would need to be enforced.

Well if there is a workable brain-machine interface, your sexual pleasures will no longer be limited by your physical body.

Think about it, your body have to recover after an orgasm, but if it's stimulation directly beamed into the pleasure centre of the brain, there will be no reason why you have to recover, or 'cum' at all. Simply flip a switch and you can experience the most intense orgasm for as long as you like.

Well you can be harnessed for other things too. Let's say we use this technology to come up with a little gadget that is pluged into your brain as you go about your normal business. This gadget modifies the wiring so that the sensation of 'pain' is completely elimated biologically. The only thing a person feel is different degrees of pleasure. So that:

Fucking your waifu - more plasure
Burning your fingers - not so much pleasure

People would still function as they do now, only there's no pain. We've created a paradise where suffering on a biological level have been conquered.

Well, people understand pain the moment they are born (circumcision anyone?), at that point they haven't experienced pleasure. So one would think it works the other way around too.

Could be used for other useful things too. Suppose we make another gadget that can plug into your head and it's a parallel processing unit, greatly speeding up all mental operations of your brain.

You wake up and you immediately recognise something is different about the world - everything seems to be happening in slow motion, you will now have to listern to your favourite touhou track on your ipod at 8x speed just to enjoy music as you know it. I mean, even these days you have your regular people who don't fap to futa then indulgers like us after deeper sexual gratification, imoutos, waifus, impossibly perfect and stylized women. Guro, futa, etc.
