What's the max # of action fans you can get? I've managed to get it up to 5 through satisfaction bonuses but it's difficult to raise satisfaction much higher without wasting a shitload of time, and I don't know if there's any more fans available anyway.

Shit, since when does Iga attack you after you take Uesugi? And if I conquer them, then it'll be 5 gourds down and then shit gets crazy.

I played a First Game and just let people attack me before killing them off, so by the end I was so weak I decided to start over instead of taking the "pity" option of having the boss weakened.

In my second First Game attempt, I did pretty much the same as you're doing right now. Took Tanegashima before Mouri could grab it. I think I fought Akashi before Tenshi, but the order doesn't really matter. I'd suggest finishing off Tenshi and immediately declaring war on Akashi before the game chooses your next opponent for you.

Now I'm stuck with problems of my own. I conquered all of Takuga and Mouri so I'm still not up to 5 gourds broken, and I think I could delay the 5th gourd for quite a while by going against Miko, Tokugawa and Imagawa before attacking a gourd house... but in the meantime, turns pass and my score goes down. I'm thinking character clears aren't good enough to counter all the points I'll be losing by delaying it further.

There's gotta be an "ideal time" to break the 5th gourd, right? After the temple event there'll be 10 more turns before the Demon Army appears and then I'll have to clear two more territories to get to the bridge...

This game is killing me!

Don't expect to get any points from the first game except for the route clearing.. But if you really want some, End game option is the way to go. Just give it to everyone any may be you will have 10-15 more points by the end.

If anyone is willing to mod the game slightly, I have a favor to ask. I'd like to have all of Rance's sprites and portraits replaced with Duke Nukem. I feel that several others and I would enjoy this game much more with the Duke as the main character.

Yeah, I've been giving +2 points to everyone, but at this rate I'm not sure it'll do me any good. Oh well. I figure it'd take almost no time to clear to the bridge if I break a fifth gourd and take one Shimazu territory before the Demon Army claims the house.

This person is correct I believe. Scouting does not show Kenshin when she joins another side for one battle since she joins after the you commit to battle. She won't show up if you use Rance though I believe. Scouting only works when attacking the Uesugi House.

Honestly before playing the game I expected to like Kenshin the most, normal seeing all the hype surrounding her.
But she was a terrible character, really fucking bland.
And Ran is horrible, her story too.
In the end Kou actually had a personality, a drive, she managed to get back on her feet in an awesome way after tasting despair, she is the true star of the game.
