I've also had to deal with franchises I like being ruined by exactly what I said, the devs listening to a very vocal "elite" minority of players (see Total War). For non event maps, it's about people with shit tons of time.They will break any kind of game balance, like farming for resources, leveling, or ranking. Imagine infinite maruyu or entire base of level 175 shipgirls.
For event maps, it's to gate how long will players (especially the ones mentioned above) finish the whole event. Normally a set of 3 sparkled runs would cost you 2 irl hours. So 30 runs is around 60 hours, or 3 irl days. That's just only for the final map and not even counting gimmicks. Not having a morale-gate would likely break the whole game for dedicated people with infinite time and maruyu.

Farming infinite resources in event maps? If they had such a map, it could be farmed by rotating ships. Ranking gets the bulk of the points from boss nodes and requires a low resource and bucket cost. Killing the boss would end the boost and event maps tend to be expensive to run. It's easy to have low cost event maps give few ranking points, anyway. You can get to 175 by rotating ships, and there have already been cheesy combined fleet sub node leveling strategies in events that didn't depend on morale.
