2941956 No.2941956 [Reply] [Original]

The main problem with western maid cafes is that they think "maid" means wearing one of those dresses and if the dress is pretty, you are an excellent maid.

Maid is a state of mind. It's an attitude. You can't be a maid if you act like a regular waitress, no matter how you are dressed. You have to give the customer the illusion that he is special; that you are there just for him. That's what he pays for. The dress is just a prop.

>> No.2941958

also, western maids aren't moe

Well that's kind of the same thing.

western waitresses suck, you totally get turned off when they pass you the menu and say "wut do ya want."

>> No.2941964

Well they are probably wary of the North American implications of calling customers "master" and such so the costume is probably as far as they can go.

This would be fine, but all western maid cafes are in California. Someone should open one in Vermont or Maine, well beyond the earshot of any minorities who would be offended by the word. Of course, the owners would also have to take the maid concept seriously, instead of doing it ironically in that "lol japan so randum XD" style.

But maybe it would easier to do a tsundere maid cafe. Then the maids can actually say what they're really thinking, and indeed are expected to do so. Things like "I'm not doing this because I want to" and "You didn't want mayo? Tch, just scrape it off, I'm gonna go smoke a cigarette."

Even the best maid cafe here would be just an inferior ripoff of a Japanese concept. They should make something more uniquely American, so that people can really take it as theirs.

Like a slave cafe. Civil war era trappings, negroes shining your shoes while you eat and calling you 'massah'.

Oh sorry I wasn't implying a minority / slave thing with the use of the word master, I meant I'm sure there would be female complaints about the chauvinism behind it, or something. Pretty dumb either way, but then again I like making tea myself at home so being served by a maid would be pointless ~

I recall a few years ago some minority with too much free time sued a computer parts company because the components being labeled "master" and "slave" offended him. I guess in a more loosely defined sense, the master/slave thing gets linked to racism more, but if it's a girl in a maid outfit calling their presumably male customer master, I just have a feeling some women rights groups would be up in arms. Of course no one is forcing the girls to work there, so maybe they would just try to make you feel bad for being a customer.

Regardless though, it seems like all western maid cafes are doomed to failure.

>>2942067
These exist already, don't they? Perhaps what we need is just a cafe that is free of maids and butlers and has both male and female employ- oh, wait.

I think the objections might arise depending on who one is serving. If you imagine for a moment that you are female, how would you feel about acting subservient toward the regulars in some Akihabara establishment? Probably no objections, right? Now how would you feel about acting that way toward some smirking American (or Canadian) chump? Hmm.

>so maybe they would just try to make you feel bad for being a customer.

They already do that for any reason or no reason. There is a loud-mouthed minority of aggro-feminists who think being male is in itself something one should feel guilty about. Most people quickly learn to ignore them the same way people in cities learn to ignore traffic noise.

The problem won't be in the customer end. It's really mostly in the maid part - there are very few women in this corner of the world capable of, even temporarily, even as a part of agreed-upon roleplay, showing the kind of subservience a real meido needs. It's an attitude question.

>> No.2942155

Well I was talking about objections from external groups about a Western maid cafe, not the girls working in Japanese ones. I'm sure even the girls in Western ones might not mind the language, but others might. I'd feel bad getting literally waited on by a maid so I don't think I'd like it much ~

>>2942138
The pictures that someone posted once from a butler cafe in Japan looked pretty silly anyway. It was a fairly average looking white guy with overly gelled hair serving. You can do better~

Being a maid is certainly a different mindset than, say, being a Hooters girl. But ultimately you're just portraying a character. With adequate training and exposure to maid culture and the moe aesthetic, Americans should be perfectly capable of playing the part.

>> No.2942170

I see. I was just pointing out that even the same girl working in the two different environments might be more inclined to adopt the 'maid persona' in one than another. So even if there were no external objections, it might be difficult for a girl to play the maid role 'properly'.

It's not really about true subservience, it's about playing an expected role that your customer appreciates. Even the girls in Japanese maid cafes are pretty bad actors, so you probably wouldn't feel that bad about it.

I want to visit one of the butler cafes that is actually staffed by women in drag.

Not that simple, I'm afraid. Some western maids are physically attractive.

If anything, they should work worse there, since without giving blowjobs for the customers there's only so much they can do to outperform all the regular shopkeepers.

In west, where all too often service means that you don't have to load the plastic tray yourself, it would make more sense to there be a special place where people pay for just being treated well.
