Study finds no link between child porn and sex abuse

MEN without a prior sex conviction who look at child pornography on the internet are unlikely to sexually assault a child, according to Swiss scientists.

Researchers led by Frank Urbaniok of the Canton of Zurich Department of Justice delved into the criminal record of 231 men who were charged with viewing child pornography via a US website.

In the six years before the 2002 police operation, only one per cent were known to have committed a hands-on sex offence.

And only one per cent of the men committed a hands-on sex offence in the six years afterwards.

The study reinforces previous research which found most consumers of internet child pornography are well-educated and view other types of illegal pornography as well, including sexual acts involving animals or violence.

Mr Urbaniok said men who surfed the web for child pornography were sex offenders, but it should not be automatically assumed that they were a risk for sexually assaulting a child.

Well I've always thought it was ridiculous how some people seemingly push this idea that by viewing something people somehow lose the ability to control themselves. Anyone not blinded by "but it's icky and horrible!" has understood that too. People have to be held responsible for their own actions.

The problem with CP is that it exploits children. I understand that, but simple possession of it shouldn't be treated as harshly as it is. It's treated harshly simply because people view the offenders as sickos and that isn't right. It's essentially punishing people for thought, and ignoring rationale in favor of emotion. Years of jail time and being entered into a sex offender registry is too much for not actually harming anyone.

We (the intellectual elite, not the courts and lawmakers) have already found that saying CP may not be distributed for free over the Internet because it "encourages criminals to produce more" is not a valid argument. If the distributor is not getting paid for it, there simply is no incentive for him to produce more of it. With this same reasoning, we can argue that free distribution of CP actually helps to reduce CP creation because the pedos do not have to pay to acquire it (which they will try to do anyway), which would give the person selling it incentive to create more.

I do not like CP, but I cannot rationally say people should be barred from possessing it or distributing it without proper arguments for it. And I do not consider "ewww it's sick" a proper argument, and since this study now shows people acquiring and possessing CP doesn't increase the chances of them molesting a child, what valid, logical reason is there still left to forbid people from owning it?

Of course, we're arguing with people who think lolicon should be illegal because it "incites pedophiles to commit a crime", an argument so flawed it is beyond ridiculous.

But trading CP does indeed create communities for exchanging CP, eg Tor.

The only reason why they go after you for possessing CP is because the feds don't want CP-P2P networks to get any bigger. When CP-P2P networks get big like tor, it inspires more 'criminal' pedophiles to contribute to it. Why do you think it is that the pedophiles put their videos on the web in the first place? They do it to inspire other pedophiles to share their videos. Sadly thanks to web 2.0, sharing CP has become a cool/popular trend among pedophiles. Pedophiles wont feel content until they can download child pornography on demand. And yes, there has been some people that have made money from pedophilia, eg LS.
