I really doubt that, the open autograph session seems more like to reverse a bad PR commotion over AX.
Considering there are atleast 5,000 people at AX specifically there to see Musume, the signature quotas are really against the spirit of the whole event, but that is how business is done. My question is why was it so strict, is it because they plan on doing more appearances?

It could be several ways. One way it might be is that they simply underestimated the demand there would be, though I think that would be a trifle unlikely. It could also be due to time constraints the girls were under, perhaps they had filming to do for some dvd in LA. Perhaps they were thinking things could go bad in some way, and wanted to have the signings go fast in case things did get out of hand.

Or it could have simply been AX being unprepared faggots.

There is nothing the Japanese love more than instilling quotas. Honestly, I think it simply was a group think mentality, to treat the fans as a high demand commodity and not consider the factors revolving around AX.
After all, they are the distinguished guests, they don't/won't worry about the organization of said events but rather just the time frames set for these events.
Creating demand for their return happens both in the positive and negative, all classical japanese style.

The problem is creating the paradigm in which there is so no expected structure and they have to actually build something new and unique, a fatal flaw in the Japanese idol business. They play it conservative but what they really need to do is be truly progressive and build something entirely new here.

Extremely unlikely, the subculture in which supports Musume and the established Japanese idol groups is erratic and unstable that I doubt H!P would be willing enough to test said waters with a much younger and less established Japanese group.

Do you guys think this trip was a good start to breaking into the American market? Or was it more a sort of test to see how things went abroad? From what I understand (which is not much since I didn't go to ax and don't follow the band as much as most) this event was mainly attended by people who are already fans. I doubt there were many people who had never heard of them and went to the concert/other events and are now fans.

They're sweethearts one and all. They were waving to ppl in line, freely chatting to people at the table (translators were there).

Amazing how different Gakisan looks with a bit of eyeshadow on.

Highlight of the con: after Eri signed my copy of Maple, I flipped to the inside cover and told her "this is my home city". The translator did her bit and she suddenly perked up, eyes wide open, pointed at me and the PB and said "Canada? CANADA?! <something I couldn't quite make out in Japanese> I LOVE IT!!!" I was so overwhelmed don't remember if I gave her a high-five or just a simple handshake.... I'll never forget how wide her eyes got tho.

It seems they love their PBs (too bad some ppl I talked to didn't get their PBs signed due to a misunderstanding of the autograph policy), or at least Aichan, Gakisan, and Eririn did.

AX's autograph policy is broken down to the core. You have no idea how much of the con I missed due to sitting in a line waiting for an autograph I may or may not get (more often did not than did). I missed autograph tickets because I had to be in line for another autograph. I missed autograph tickets because I couldn't get to the door (where they were handing out tickets) during a panel switchover.

They had no concept of line control, staff & volunteers were poorly trained, and the GR Manager even gave me lip when I tried to explain how broken their system really was.

Really inexcusable given how many high-profile guests they've been able to pull in over the years. If you're gonna get these kind of guests, it's expected there will be many attendees wanting autographs. A gross case of convention executives not doing their homework.

It seemed like a system of nightmarish lines poorly coordination and angry high tension staff. Not a great combination for a welcoming for Musume. I can only imagine what island fag is feeling right now, spending 3k to spend a good 20 hours or so in lines, but if he got into the autograph and saw the show, it definitely would of been worth it.

Yea its exactly how I thought it would be, I really wonder what they will do with the autograph and concert footage, that be pretty cool to be on a DVD magazine.
I'm really amazed at the real time streams and updates that were coming out of there, it was fun to watch.

So, while video is upping, I'll report. I got 3 autographs from them!!! This was so so so AWESOME, I have become and even greater wota than before. While in line I got to wave at Lin Lin, Aika, and Gakisan. They waved back at me. They're so lovely, and so energetic, this is when you really see how idols smile all the time.


The first session was the best, cause we had time to talk to them and handshakes. I'm an Aichan fan, and as I expected Ai was the first in the line. I'm happy about this cause I was thinking to not shake anyone's hand before I shaked Ai's. She just looked at me, and say hi, I told her that I was a big fan of hers since she joined MM. That she is great and keep her good work, that I will always support her from my country. She smiled and me and said thanks, and keep staring at me. Maybe because I'm too tall. Then I gave her a letter, she took it and sked if this was for her. I told her that it was, she smiled, said thank you and that she will definetely read it later. Her smile is over 9000 times more charming than I would have imagined, I just love her more now. Sorry about the faggotry, but you would have to live it to understand.

Then Gaki's time came, I was already blacked out and I forgot to tell her what I wanted to, but I told her she was amazing and to keep smiling like that. (I'm also a gaki fan, but just seeing Ai made me forget to tell her orz). Also why Gaki was signing, I couldn't stop staring at Ai, I couldn't stop staring at Ai lol. But even though she was signing for the next guy, she turned around to see me again and smiled at me.

Finally Lin Lin, I was somehow a fan of Lin Lin, she is funny, always cheerful, and seem to don't care that she doesn't have that many fans, but still like to have attention on her, but not on the whorish way koharu does. I'm not sure what that number is from, but I can tell you one thing - the room had PLENTY of open seats, the entire back rows were almost empty with a few random people sitting in every other row or so. Aside from that, many many many people left, while many others came in to soon leave again.

So if the number is based on tickets given out or something - the fact that most people only stayed in the room very shortly might explain that.


As for the room, it was in a room teh size of the exhibition hall, just with a small stage and thousands of seats instead of shops. It's no wonder they didn't use the staples center this year for the concerts.

It's an actual fact that the room was never near full for the Musume concert, and that the entirety of the back rows and righthand side of the room were practically empty the entire time.

It's also a fact that you could openly walk in and out of the concert once it began - as there was no more standby line left at that time, seats were first-come first-serve, and the concert was far from being 'high-demand' so the staff didn't keep the doors closed. Actually, when I left they were stuck open by the staff so that people could more easily come in and out.


As for loving it, lol. I couldn't stand it, but I didn't feel like having fags like you claim I was trolling simply because we don't have the same tastes in music.

I've read mumblings amongst the three different boards, seems the demeanor did change atleast for Saturday's events. To think that they were yelled at is so sad and frustrating as well.
I understand where the punishment is coming from as they don't want to create two standards, one for international fans and one for Japanese fans.
I think they were worried enough about all the autographs and then you add on the extremely warm greetings on day one with people crying and giving them gifts.
The staff probably just wanted the same robotic line style as instigated on Saturday, just blast through and yell at anything extra.

When you think about it a little deeper I think that some of these fans got a better greeting than some of the die hards back home.

This is the crux of the issue. While I have not seen the devotion of the Japanese wota first hand, I can only imagine that it crushes the American counterpart. Lets not kid ourselves, there was a certain degree of this going on at AX, if anything we are just witnessing the same process occuring but with first time concert goers and gaijin fans.

So its pretty clear that they were staying at the Westin. Did anyone get photos of this lesser known breakfast event, that would of been sweet to be at. I also hope they did another series of waking up videos up there on the 14th floor.

You should remember that you were one of the lucky ones who did get an autograph, I've read some disgruntled experiences.
But honestly I think it is something that runs different in Western fans, the need to personalize the event and attach meaning to every step of way, in a way they are selfish with they're experience and time with Musume.

In my heart of hearts, I'd like to believe that a few of the girls were thinking "fuck it" and were awesome to those that got to interact with them. Perhaps they were overwhelmed by the combination of support they were getting and being in a totally different country/environment. Unlike the typical vibe exhibited by MM that screams "I am a MM so you should be thankful." undertone but covering it up with their insincere big fake smile, AKB48 in their TV show really doesn't put up any fake acts, and behave the way they normally do with their real personalities. It was so refreshing to see how down to earth they were, and immediately understood their unrivaled popularity right now. AKB48 is hands down superior in "the girl next door." quality, but that doesn't bring their idol status down at all, in fact it raises the mass appeal factor even more so supplemented with their superior looks, proven by some of the more well-known members' popularity in the general public.

Not to sound too pessimistic, but I really think that’s a ‘convenient’ excuse for “Hello Project” agency to get rid of aging performers by saying they are being released to pursue solo careers. Maybe some of them will actually go on to do that but that’s really just their way of nicely telling them “get out, you’re too old now”. jmo

“Out with the old and in with the new”. The bulk of the singers keep getting younger and younger. Next thing you know they’ll be putting toddlers on stage. But I guess as long as it’s mostly the little 15 -16-year old (girls) who are spending Mom and Dad’s money on music and concerts, then they’ll keep catering to them.

In one rather off-beat example, the example of the famous comedian Phil Hartman, in his various skits with SNL or his starring role in News Radio.. a lot of the humor in the sketches had relied almost exclusively on the deadpan comic timing of Phil. When Phil left SNL the cast members and writers had felt they had lost "the glue" that held sketches together.. and ultimately when Phil was murdered by his wife both the Simpsons and News Radio had lost a member of their cast that they relied on to pull them out of tough situations.

During some graduation in MM the group lost their Phil Hartman. They ceased to be one cohesive unit and began their spiral into an assortment of individuals who look like they'd rather have nothing to do with each other. Every emotion seems forced, every appearance seemed awkward. The Hello! Project also suffered when groups graduated (Tanpopo, Pucchi Moni, etc) and replaced with inferior counterparts largely centered around useless singers (Viyuden [Ishikawa], EcoMoni [Ishikawa + Michishige], Country Musume [FUCKING ISHIKAWA AGAIN]) and while some groups hit a chord (Berryz, C-ute, and I guess GAM?) for the large part the feeling of the Hello! Project as one large group began to fade. The Hello! Project began it's spiral into many different groups. No more Summer Shuffle Groups.. not even a "Hello!' to the one-shot Hello! Project All-Stars.
