My cellphone camera isn't that great, but I wanted to share some Touhou cosplay I saw at Anime Boston 2008

I also saw one guy dressed as Akius Ikubu at the Moe panel, who I talked to, but I forgot to get his picture D: hitting myself now

These two girls I saw at the dealer's room playing IaMP. I asked if they wanted to play a match, but they mumbled something..."We're not that good at it"? "We have to get somewhere"? and went off. I hope my otaku-ish appearance didn't scare them off.

Not one of these cosplayers is awesome. The only one that's not gag-inducing is Wriggle. But that costume is really just a dress shirt with dress pants hiked up and/or hemmed to the knees. The cape should be readily available at any costume shop. Finish it off by taping some pipe cleaners to your head, and you're set.

99% of all American cosplay is atrocious. The best cosplay I've seen was actually at sci-fi cons. To Trekkies, cosplay is SERIOUS fucking BUSINESS.

Y'see, there are TWO types of good cosplay. The first type is where their body type matches and they actually pay a lot of attention to details.

The second type is when they are so hilariously bad that they become good - which also actually requires a fair bit of effort to make everything as incongruous as possible.

The cosplayers that "try" to look good but fail are the worst IMO.

Yeah, that and the "headband = cosplay" mentality popular among the narutards. But the real problem is that people half-ass it. Most costumes look like the person tried to hammer it out three days before the convention. And unless you're a professional seamstress for Universal Pictures, that doesn't work. Some friends of mine are Serious Business cosplay freaks. They actually produce some top notch shit. But if they're planning to have a particular outfit ready for, say, Anime USA (in November), they're already worried about getting it done in time when it's still March.

The other problem, that goes without saying, is people picking outfits that don't fit they're body type. It doesn't matter how good of a tailor you are, if you are a 200 pound woman there is no way you can dress up like Faye Valentine and not look ridiculous.

And the other problem is how people react to cosplayers. The bar has been set so low that no standards of quality exist, so people not only get away with mediocrity, but get praised for it. No one bothers to say, hey Sephiroth, that suit looks like it came from the salvation army and that sword wouldn't pass as a prop in an elementary school play.
