obviously this includes hiragana making you wrong here. but anyway the academic world began using hiragana to write names of animals but so switched to katakana to make it easier to read (2). this is where the "rule" comes from, because it's an accepted standard in scientific contexts to use katakana but this is nothing other than a custom. the japanese governments writing on this says nothing about it. even if it did it wouldn't mean anything because every single current piece of legislation regarding japanese writing says this at in the 前書き
