I think that's just because there are more professional cosplayers in Japan. Most cosplayers in America are amateurs.

Calling them professional cosplayers is a big stretch. They self-publish their own cosplay sets, selling them at conventions, by mail or through download sites. It doesn't take much, a location and a photographer and some processing on a comp. Japanese cosplayers that try to earn a few yen on their hobby are in other words also amateurs. A few are lucky enough to get an occasional modeling job for the handful of cosplay magazines out there, but that doesn't make them professionals.

That said I can agree that there are financial incentives for many Japanese cosplayers to look great, and they become trend setters for other cosplayers. Western cosplayers in general don't seem to approach the hobby as seriously as the Japanese.

>Western cosplayers in general don't seem to approach the hobby as seriously as the Japanese.
Well, you see, that's the thing. Japanese take EVERYTHING ridiculously seriously. Like they spend every moment of their life on their hobbies and their work. Here in the West we're chill, we do things to enjoy ourselves, not to show off to other people (which is pretty much ingrained in their culture). Some losers who spend most of their time on an internet message board admire them more than Westerners for that, even though just about every Westerner accomplishes more than he does.

/jp/ folks are like people claiming only Michael Jackson makes good makes, and ANY other artist is total crap. They just apply it to people from a certain country.

Because in America we have something called the Puritan work ethic which stipulates that our work be productive. Taking your hobby seriously makes you look like a weirdo. You must work hard at your job, not your hobby on the side. Not to say we don't have people who aren't hardcore with their hobbies in America, we have plenty. We call them geeks. The thing is that costume playing of Japanese animu characters is not as prevalent in the west. It's fucking stupid to compare east and west when it comes to cosplay of animu characters. Seriously, what the fuck. Are you saying Japanese people are hardcore about costume playing American comic heroes too? I rarely see them.

Nobody wants to cosplay that because they suck. Seriously, I like Western comics and cartoons, but all that American superhero bullshit just plain sucks balls. I was excited about /co/ when it was just opened but was quickly disappointed once it was filled with Spiderman/Superman/X-Men garbage.

If only there was a board to discuss European comics. But all the different languages makes it difficult.

Of course westerners would look better if they used makeup, photoshop and got really serious about cosplaying like the japanese.

>> No.2883771

Anyone else here pronounce it co-splay rather than cos-play?

>> No.2883857

Major difference between japanese and american cosplayers is that to the japanese, cosplaying is all about looking the part and loving the character. So they end up buying their costumes rather than making them. While american cosplayers seem to think that the love of the character will show through if they made the costumes themselves. Also noting that costumes aren't as accessible in America where as they sell them in chain stores in Japan.

That's about it. I cosplayed as Shiki and Akiha with my waifu(inb4 enjoy your hand) a few months back, and some people asked us to take photos with them. Looking at the photos, we didn't really look good at all, but that's maily because we did not have make up or photoshop, we did not even bother wiping the sweat in our foreheads or anything, because we were just taking it easy.
Japs invest a lot in their cosplays, and I'm not talking about money only, they take 3 hours to get ready, while all I had to do was zip my pants, if I were to use make up or some gay contact lenses of course I'd look as good.

TL;DR: japs take cosplaying as if their lives depended on it, that doesn't mean they look any better than gaijins.

>> No.2884086

>>2883857
Huh? So it's the Westerners who are really more creative, rather than the Japs?

>>2884047
Okay, nice excuse, but why don't you try doing that? Why don't you try taking, say, an hour for it and use make-up and crap to make yourself look good? I mean, yeah it will take more time, but if the end result is so much better it might be worth it.

>> No.2884122

>>2884086
I didn't say it wasn't worth, I just don't like taking something like a hobby to that point, we did not even wear them to participate on some shit or for people to look at us, it was just trying something rather different than what we are used to do(and the wincest idea worked well).
It wasn't a excuse to explain why we don't look as good, but rather, to explain why they look so much better.

Also, the pictures of japs cosplaying that look amazing are never taken in closed places, after a few hours of being there. Most of them are always half-good looking people fixed with the computar later.

thats because japanese people do things right, or they don't do it at all, same with ripping videos and music, they don't usually take a camera and film a tv prog, they buy the things they need to do it right. not to say that all japanese do, but it doesnt really matter, because americans aren't japanese, and they have no culture of their own, and all the anime fags want to be... well... fags.

Who are you to say that people don't have fun being serious about their hobbies? It's ok to be lazy (not being sarcastic here) but don't use that as a reason to bash people who are more dedicated than you.

>even though just about every Westerner accomplishes more than he does.
People have different things they want to accomplish. Having a good cosplay might be as much of accomplishment for these people as going out to the clubs and getting laid is for you. Once again you're expecting other people to conform to your values.
