So how come most VN's don't use a symphony to compose their soundtracks? I know the smaller companies can only afford a guy with a synth but big companies like Key can have a fully orchestrated soundtrack.

never gonna happen

>> No.2872813

Key is a big company but they aren't THAT big that they can afford an orchestra.

I'm really sick of all the generic, bland orchestral music in ALL of the games lately. Even the C&C series went that way.

The latest Hell March was good though.

Even the big eroge companies don't have that kind of budget. Orchestras are expensive.

Well Clannad was in the top 10 most sold games in Japan 2004 so I would say that they are pretty big.

Well that's mainly in action games. I think orchestra would work better for a VN trying to get catharsis out of us. Like having a full string section playing a haunting melody when Nagsia dies.

Key doesn't really look that big. I'm not really familiar with company sizes, but still: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxBTtkg-Pi0

Klepacki always wanted to make an orchestral version of that track. Nothing beats the original one though. 6 minutes of rock goodness that halfway through goes smoothly into electronica awesomeness.

Changing the subject a bit since we're sort of on the subject. Do you guys know if there are any plans to translate, well more like import the existing translation to the PSP version of Planetarian?

Without an orchestra VN composers are forced to focus on writing good melodies. With orchestrated soundtracks composers often get too caught up in the instrumentation and forget to actually write good music.

It would be cheaper for them to use existing pieces. Pic related.

Orchestras are pretty expensive to hire - a very good orchestra will run you several dozen grands. Most of the orchestral music you hear in games are actually made from sampled orchestral libraries. In fact, I don't think I can think of one game that has a fully live orchestra soundtrack. Even Xenosaga with it's totted LSO recording still had some synthesized orchestral tracks here and there.
Maybe Dragon Quest VIII though, not sure as I haven't heard the whole soundtrack.

PER DAY I forgot to add. So yeah, basically only blockbuster games and movies can really afford it. Even then, it may only be for a partial score.

I think Uematsu has an orchestra, but I could be wrong.

>> No.2873048

That only applies to shitty composers with a big budget. Key's in house composer has proven himself talented. I'm sure he wouldn't squander an orchestra if one was given to him.

>> No.2874619

You can fake an orchestra pretty well these days, so the one guy with a synth must not be that great.
