He doesn't really have depth.
He isn't bad, especially since Tsukihime is only a doujin, but he is a little "uneven".
I think a lot of people here are seeing him through nostalgia goggles or are thinking about the fan material too much.
He really didn't do anything out of the ordinary and his narration was neither really interesting or engaging.

Shiki's mentality is actually unique compared to most leads, with his stance in death, and the lengths he goes for who he decides is his most important person.
The problem with Shiki is that he is mostly similar in all his routes. Aka, like most ledas in VNs, he doesn't have a really different growth per route.
Of course, that means if you like him in one of them, you will like him in all of them.

It's not that uncommon really, and it's not that developed in Tsukihime anyways.
Not at the extent of something like Konata yori Kanata Made or something.

Shiki is a generic, faceless protagonist in Tsukihime. How could he have depth? The heroines are the true stars of the game.

I think people are just confusing the doujinshi with the actual game like >>2871832 said. It's the same thing that goes on with Touhou.

It is.
Most people are plagued or ignore their traumas.
Shiki, exactly because of what he has been through, learns to appreciate his life for what it is.
This is usually the END result.

Though I will admit that I view Shiki as a whole ,aka with the added depth, backstory and dialogue provided by Kagetsu and Melty.

But he is definitely not 'faceless' in Tsukihime.
Not my favorite stand-alone, but he has an obvious characterization that can be appealing.
Plus, prone to rape.

>> No.2871915

Romeo I think, I have a soft spot for unmotivated cynical fucks, and he actually was an adult for a change.
As far as schoolboy self-inserts go, Shirogane Takeru is pretty cool.
I haven't played Sharin, G-string or CC though, I hear they have great mains.

Also, I liked Shirou as a main character. The fucking stupid thought process is rageworthy, I agree, but I just see it as part of the story. Just like most stories begin with boring-as-ass everyday shit to set things up, so the fucked up thought process was needed in order to build up the other routes.
Also, I think many losers had the white knight "I'll be a carpet for those around me so I won't be hated" phase anyways, he reminded me of that.

I don't really see how this matters. Once again, I can't see why one would prefer Shiki over the hordes of other generic, faceless protagonists found in countless other eroge; Shiki is no more developed than the main guy in Wanko. And this Anon >>2871832 is still right on the money.

Ignoring characterization written by the author is teh cool thing these days?
Also, Shiki is nothing alike most faceless leads, due to his initial stance and interactions throughout Tsukihime.
He has an obvious character and reasoning throughout all the routes,, he doesn't just go with the flow of the events.

But so far he's boring, has no backbone in front of his father-dude, has hardly any social sense which is pretty apparent in his conversations. Makes me wonder how he's so good with his business.
