I'm in my third year of studies at Brock University here in Canada; my program is concurrent education with English as my major.

I've been offered admission into an exchange program to one of many countries, and Japan is on the list of available countries alongside Germany, New Zealand, France, and The Netherlands. By studying abroad I can get first hand teaching experience, and my program will be finished 3 months before it normally would. My scholarships will cover it so money isn't an issue.

/jp/, do you think it would be worthwhile to go to Japan and do this? A friend of mine who's finished his studies did a working holiday visa in Japan for 12 months and he said he was treated like a barbarian and often physically assaulted when walking around taking in the sights, so I'm slightly inclined not to.

What does /jp/ think? I was leaning towards New Zealand but Japan seems pretty cool. PS: I don't like anime, manga, videogames, and know fuck-all about Japanese culture.

If you're black, don't go.
If you're Hispanic, don't go.
If you're Korean or Chinese, go if you want to get killed.
If you're American, lie and say you're Canadian.

>English major
I feel bad for you. Hang in there.

Don't go to Japan

>asking /jp/ if going to Japan is a good idea.

Oh, the irony.

>> No.2864716

You seem to think that /jp/ will give you good advice about Japan, while stating "I don't like anime, manga, videogames."

/jp/ isn't actually a board about Japan, but rather about anime, manga, and videogames. Sorry.

Try /trv/.

Serious answer: go ask /trv/.

If you don't really like anything from Japan, why bother going there?

Go somewhere interesting, like France.

New Zealand but you have to deal with shitty internet.

Serious answer:

You should continue your studies in your home country and work to embetter your community.

Another Canadian here. Since you go to Brock, you're probably used to partying and getting drunk a lot.
So, if it's Japan, you'll be stuck around nigerian immigrants and other (mostly weeaboo) exchange students in Roppongi night clubs. So spare yourself the awkwardness and go somewhere more interesting.

No, actually, I don't. I'm concerned with studying far more than I am about recreation.

Well, by all means, go for it. That is, you'll probably be sent out to the countryside to teach, most likely. From all the info about JET and english-teaching I've heard on the net, such experiences really are a mixed bag. You can try asking other forums more educated on this subject than this place. Also, you'll have to deal with culture-shock and some implied racism from day to day. Then again, if you're really interested, a little novelty wouldn't hurt.

Uhhhh. Yeah. Good luck with that.
If it's anything else, like Asian history or politics or something, I don't see what's the harm.

I grew up in NZ, and I have to say it's just simply amazing. The sights, the people, the overall feel is just relaxing and awesome. Definitely go if you can.

Since you're Canadian you probably know a little bit of French, so here's a great chance to brush up on the lingo.

Otherwise I'd recommend The Netherlands or Germany. They can probably offer worthwhile studies related to the Germanic language family. Might also be a chance to pick up your host country's language.

If you don't want something too challenging, try NZ.

If you're a total weaboo, go to Japan. Who knows, they might have something academic that's worthwhile.

Get out of /jp/. I'm sure you have lots of sports to play, rap to listen to and whores to impregnate. God, I hate you.
