The GTA server will be having a special Halloween run tomorrow, Saturday, at around 9:30 PM EST. Don't be shy, come blow some stuff up and watch scary movies as your favorite Touhou girl!

On another note, after 407 days the MTA team has also released update 1.5.8 (previously meant to be 1.6!). Not a whole lot new in terms of scripting features, but they've listed about 70 bugs fixed inclusding various memory leaks that were present. I've been keeping an eye on their GitHub page also and it seems like they're diverting some manpower specifically towards keeping YouTube working smoothly interestingly enough. Although given their general slow pace in things it could be anywhere between 5 months to a year before we actually see something come of it, it's worth noting nonetheless for those who like movie nights.

And on the topic of movies - the YouTube script as you may know can be notoriously janky, so I've been fiddling around with the concept of alternatives. This is a little proof-of-concept screenshot taken in-game using CyTube. If someone were to say, have difficulties watching in-game or were otherwise unable to join in-game you could just alt-tab to the actual website and watch it there instead of having to sit it out entirely, as they're synced. It also supports cross-communication. Just a floated concept I've played around with a bit, it'd need some work before it's smoothed-out. Movie nights can be a bit rare anyways so it may not be worth the work, but I'm always open to suggestions or alternatives. I've been a bit under the weather myself so you'll have to pardon the small update, but I do have a fun little thing or two for Halloween too.

thanks for your hard work, I was worried about the cinema thing not working anymore, apparently youtube changed something in their end that broke it.

Shame that cool feature like the youtube script is they way it is. It's really neat and simple when it does work. Cant be helped really, but thanks for looking into alternative solution even it takes long time.
Hopefully 1.5.8 does more good than bad for us specifically.

Here are 4 skins for I rigged Halloween. It's not really Halloween themed, but skins we did not have nonetheless.

YouTube still works, but it's unreliable at best. The old version from about a year ago that was the most reliable used YouTube TV, but sadly Google made changes to what devices are able to access it which unfortunately killed any scripting support for it. Reintegrating support for it is what the MTA team is actually trying to work on right now. The current player is a regular YouTube embed which is why it can be a little jank.

While it's not terribly important given how infrequent it is, I don't like having people sit out, would rather have a slightly unorthodox workaround so you can at least still participate until there's a more concrete solution other than leave people out of it entirely.

I will be hosting a multiplayer 2hu Dominions 5 game starting next week. It is a turn-based strategy game somewhat similar to Civilization. If you're interested, please read this detailed pastebin here:

https://pastebin.com/uhs3pgbt

The game will be Play-By-Email format. Dropbox will be used as a hub to host the game file, and so that players can upload their turns directly there.

The 2hu factions available are based on every mainline game starting from EoSD to WBaWC, plus 1 extra Hakurei Shrine faction featuring Reimu, Marisa and the three fairies. In total, there are 12 available factions, and since players are not allowed the same factions, there are also 12 player slots. Details on how to reserve a faction for yourself are in the pastebin. (let's not flood the thread; please do not post it here)

Why starting next week? Because I assume for most, it will be the first time they've heard of Dominions 5, and so I leave this week as time for you to get acquainted with the faction you like, as well as the basic game mechanics. It's quite a complex game. It's also very fun even on single player, so yeah.

I will try and add as many tips as I can at the bottom of the pastebin to help you on your feet, especially with the more obscure mechanics.

The 2hu dominions 5 game >>28608891 will be hosted starting tomorrow.

If you wish to join, send in your faction pick, as as well as your pretender god to the email address listed in the pastebin under "IV. How to play by email" section. If you've already sent your faction pick, send your pretender god file based on the instructions in the pastebin. Better to send in your faction pick first before your God so I can inform you if your pick is already taken. If you have any questions, feel free to mail them in as well.

The absolute cutoff time for joining is around 6AM EST of Nov. 9th.

Once the game starts, I will invite all players to the shared dropbox where the savefile will be hosted. New players cannot join midgame.

Initial deadline of turns will be 2 days or 48 hours each turn. This can be adjusted by the players once the game is in progress. Generally, once every player has taken their turn and uploaded to the dropbox, the next turn will be generated, so the real turn rotation would likely be faster.

Play by email is an old-timey way of playing turn-based games with others. The concept is, you all play in a pseudo-single player savefile with all slots played by humans and you pass the savefile around to everyone once you've done your turn.

>Is there a limit on how much you can do?
I don't know what you mean by a limit. If you mean is there a limit to the number of players, theoretically, no, but since factions cannot be duplicated, there are only ~12 player slots max, representing all the 2hu factions provided by the mod.

>How did GTA IV-V do the Theatre stuff?
Do those have YouTube/internet cinemas? I've not played the multiplayer modules for either, so I couldn't say. What the server uses though is CEF, which creates a unique localized browser instance drawn every second on the client for each player when they enter the cinema. If the way I've described it makes sense, you might notice something wrong with that sentence. If each player has a unique local instance of a certain website drawn on their own individual client, how is it synced to everyone? The answer is, it isn't. Rather it's actually some trickery to create the illusion of sync. YouTube has the convenient ability for a URL to be made to link to any point in a video. Every time a video is linked in the cinema, a timer is started on the server. When you enter the cinema interior, the time kept by the server is appended to the YouTube URL pulled by your client, which creates the illusion of a synchronized video playing for everyone. This is why when an ad plays it'll fall out of time, but reentering fixes it. You can jury rig methods for other websites to create this illusion as well, though.

There's also the issue of pop-ups and other intrusions that need to be clicked to remove them, or actually even see the video as you can't do so manually due to the way the video is rendered. These issues are only present for some. Sadly as each rendered instance is unique it's very difficult for me to probe potential solutions as I can't test it myself. All in all it's not an easy challenge to tackle, most things relating to CEF aren't. It's probably my least favorite thing to work with due to the inherent nature of it.

I guess it can't hurt to ask if there's anyone here who knows DOOM modding well, to see if there's a better way of handling skins for complex doom. Ideally we'd want to be able to ignore the unique classes for each weapon that changes the skin, and use our own skins instead. As of now the edit is a sprite change to turn each weapon skin into a Touhou girl, which means every time you switch weapon you turn into a different girl. I'm not smart enough to figure out a better way of approaching it, so that's the best I could do.

I wouldn't be object to playing vanilla gameplay if other anons would rather play as a specific girl.

I think I remember that one. Is that the one where you had options to do various things? I can't remember the thread but IIRC, 36 or something said something like hug her or something along those lines.

I know we have barely done gang wars lately, but what would everyone think about changing the location of it?
We have been in LS for more than a year now, so maybe we could switch to SF, or the desert (like some people were saying earlier this year).

>> No.29602194

Desert would be nice. But I think the prerequisite for an enjoyable gang wars is the availability of valuable pickups "we can fight for" in and around the territories, which is what I think makes LS and countryside wars more fun than the SF one.

There's no real reason to use SAMP over MTA. MTA offers many more advanced functions and tools for scripting than what SAMP offers, and given the (at-times) ambitious scope of this project that's pretty important. The major pro of course being that MTA utilizes lua allowing for a lot of possibilities, whereas SAMP uses Pawn which is simpler and pretty limited in what it's capable of. Just to drive that point home - MTA has a working emulator for SAMP scripts. So you could technically run anything for SAMP on this server as well. It's a bit unoptimized and with my major dementia about that it likely won't see use, since anything worthwhile could just be remade in lua to run a bit better anyways.
Point is from a technical perspective MTA is by far the better choice no matter how you look at it.

SAMP has a much larger playerbase overall than MTA though, as I recall, which is it's main selling point - it's easy to get into and easy to make content for, but you're limited in what you can do. MTA is relatively more niche. Player counts are of course completely irrelevant to us though so it's an easy choice to make between the two. Furthermore SAMP is closed-source, and their dev team are purportedly terrible ego-trippers from what I've heard.

Not to trail on, but I feel like I get asked about this frequently in-game, don't think I've ever given a comprehensive answer about why we use MTA over SAMP. The simple fact is MTA's vast range of functions along with lua allow us to be very creative in what's made and things are only getting better with time. There's even an SCM (language used for GTA missions) interpreter in the works right now which might one day allow us to play through the actual GTASA campaign co-op.

I might get into SCM scripting so we can have co-op Gensokyo missions

I don't really know how pertinent it is, so I'll try to keep it brief:

Kalcor (the creator of SAMP) was at one point actually part of the MTA team. For some reason or another he branched off from them and started work on his own project which is now known as SAMP. At one point in time, from what I've heard, he was a very hard worker, though he eventually became bitter towards his own playerbase. You'd get banned for incessant things on the forums (the mere mention of MTA or disagreement of how something was handled was enough for a ban).

About a year ago, he mentioned SAMP was a dead project and would likely only receive security updates from that point on. A handful of it's contributors who were sick of the way he ran things and his refusal to do anything meaningful with the source code by this point (such as handing it off to someone else on the team who would actually continue to support it) decided to desert, and formed Open.mp. which is an in-development open-source alternative to SAMP which will offer backwards compatibility. Notably, the announcement of this project was basically one big rant about the way SAMP was handled. In retribution, Kalcor decided to start stripping out the functionalities those members had contributed to SAMP out of spite. He also threatened to delete the official forums. Which, as of about a month ago, it would appear they did - along with deleting the wiki that existed that explained a lot of the scripting functionalities. It would appear they've also blocked the forums domain on waybackmachine so you can't even view any old posts anymore. I'd also heard accusations that they took some of MTA's source as well, but the only proof of that is on their forums - which are now lost to time.

Basically - drama. There's two sides to every story, but all I know is I'd be right miffed if our scripts broke or we otherwise lost functionalities because of some intercommunity fighting that is in no way relating to the server.

What a waste.
The GTA community can be toxic, but you have to be special to genuinely get ticked off about it.
Just from what I'm reading, a proper team would have mitigated most of his problems. Then again, I don't follow that stuff so who knows.

Indeed. It's honestly rather tragic, neither side are particular saints here. Most of the open.mp team, especially it's founder, were apparently quite close to him. The only reason they made the announcement when they did was because they were trying to get some Russians on board and got ratted out. Their original plan was to coordinate it's development - for what they call a better SAMP, through some Discord in secret until it's planned playable release - all the while pretending to be besties with the guy still. They actually mention this much in the announcement post.

Such surreptitious plans are just dirty. It doesn't excuse his fit, but his frustration that some of his more trusted members had been organizing a practical coup against him while still pretending to be on ship with the project is pretty understandable (especially considering the guy's been supporting the thing for a decade, albeit slowly).

Real shame, can't help but wonder if there could've been an alternate solution to things. The "screw it, we'll start our own from scratch" just leads to wasted time reinventing the wheel.

I feel like rambling on a bit, so speaking of development, MTA also has some interesting history. During the early years MTA actually had insiders from Rockstar North who they would contact if they had particular difficulties with something, and they'd actually share small snips of code to help things along. Most of it was just header files and the like, though. But it was never in any official capacity, and once the whole Hot Coffee debacle came to light all their contacts had started going silent.
