With that said, when taking into account the current situation of both groups you would see that AKB48 has better odds of coming out on top than MM has of earning themselves a comeback into the mainstream or at the very least redeeming their former popularity.
Dismal sales? Yeah, success didn't come knocking at their door instantly, but perseverance and hard working as well as ACTUAL TALENT has helped them earn proper recognition. Look at MM instead: they started with a boom and fizzled out into oblivion little by little. Are you seriously such a thunderous idiot to believe that the current lineup doesn't owe every ounce of their limited popularity on those who preceded them? If they used to sell six figures sales 8 years ago then why can't they get as many suckers to buy their singles nowadays? I can't deny that during the years they have effectively left a mark, but if those girls have actually something to prove why can't they mirror the past successes anymore? Shouldn't everyone know their names as of now?

In any case, if you consider promotion to be pandering, then that's the kind of attitude that'll make mm disappear. Like you said, people get into idols for personality and music but a medium is necessary to reach out to current and potential fans. How else are you supposed to showcase personality? Also, I think mm members can do much more. Maybe you're afraid of them wearing out like you think akb will, but some of the musumes probably have nothing to do right now. Koharu was billed as the miracle that would bring the group to its former glory a la Maki Goto and failed. The reason Tsunku brought the Chinese aboard was to expand the market into East Asia and two years later those benefical effects are still to be seen.
And as if it wasn't enough, they have been basically deprived of any screen time save for the odd appearance at music-related shows after frittering away two chances in a row due to their inability to hold anyone's interest.
Sales, on the other hand, have been at a constant 50,000 mark but that's just because there's still a bunch of hard-edged wota morons whom would lap up everything indiscriminately.

It's as though UFA is banking on their former glory so much that they've come to delude themselves into thinking that the brand name alone is enough to guarantee them oodles of money and their own ounce of popularity. Even without so much as a single promotion outside of the odd radio sample, which nobody cares about, to propel them.
In any agency worth its salt this would've been looked down as an asinine marketing method, but UFA is no normal agency. It's a fucking joke that's perfectly agreeable with breaking even every time rather than troubling themselves to try and improve their situation.
The more recent the single, the more degraded the voice quality and cheapest the PV. It's an atmosphere of "Don't fucking care" that seeps through every moder MM appearance.

Besides, I wouldn't be that off the mark in assuming that today the only girls pulling their weight in the whole H!P are basically Koharu and Sayumi. How much catering to 6 year olds and making a casual appearance at a quiz show would be of aid to their status or that of their group, however, is up to debate.
As for the rest, maybe the fact they don't figure on anything but gravure photobooks says more than what's due about their station and talent.

See, people have a distaste for Poison the Well because they did metalcore back when they were 18 or whatever. The Tropic Rot is a fantastic album, people that think metalcore is "tha shit!" will hate it just like they hated Versions and the 7" EPs. It's amazing on all levels IMO, even be superior to Versions which was my album of the year 2007. PTW is one of the best bands in music today, not many (if any) bands out there that can touch them.

But anyway, like I said: I don't know shit about AKB except that that one girl is cute as all hell. And I haven't watched Ai-chan's DVD to completetion yet, only watched half so far but from what I've seen it's bound to be really great stuff.

Anyone else here checking out the Chanpuru album songs? Didn't listen to all of em yet, the ones I did listen to, only 3 are actually I'm looking forward to.
Reina's solo should be interesting.. the actual PV for her song is.. nice. I guess it's hard imagining her singing it.
The new Mini Moni actually has a cute song, but holy shit it's gonna be weird, it's not even 3 minutes long, and it's very very soft.
Also checked out Ai's and Linlin's solo songs, Ai's song seems plain, and apparently Linlin has the most powerful song (so far) in the album. Then again, every song I listened to so far has been utterly quiet and soft. Plus I was expecting Ai's solo to actually has some power to it, it's a nice melody but it doesn't have much moments of awesome like Linlin's.. The only thing I see in Ai's song, is for her to cry waterfalls of tears while singing it.

Continuing from what I was talking about, the only reason why MM singles can stay afloat is because of Reina/Ai being centered in the PV with very little distribution amongst other members, line wise and screen time. KT only did decent because it was Yossy's last song, ONSA was only able to pull sales cuz Ai/Reina focus, and only a little because of JunLin semi-appeal. RB was actually nice but nothing special, NCK was because of Reina, and SYO because they shot at a college, not on cardboard dance floors.
Look at all that, than look at Mikan, other members actually got to have screen time and sing, but the sales were a travesty. Also the genre of the music was a good part in sales, but I find that annoying.

Like I said, I got real drunk, by the time I got accused, I blacked out, next morning I was still slightly drunk and didn't say anything for the day after.
Actually fell asleep during work that day.
Also apparently had a small quarrel with parentslol. It was the second time that happened to me, but if I knew I was accused that night I would've said something.

Hey, I finished it aswell, didn't care how terrible it was, it needed to be done.
