Across the board Native instruction is important I think, your teacher or teach adjunct should be a native speaker of that language. Ideally you should also be in an environment with peers that also speak that language in order to practice and learn the social elements of the language and culture. Obviously the curriculum and textbooks should be comprehensive and multi-faceted and not grade on a curve.

Private tutoring can also work, but its hard to find a quality teacher than isn't going to just phone it in and keep you at a low level to make their lives easier. Streaming tutors are even more of a mixed bag because a lot of them have multiple students and just want to get paid. If you are in a position where you will likely never get to Japan, getting a good online tutor and then eventually branching out to virtual social groups of native Japanese is you best bet. Without spending a lot of time in Japan, you will also seem a bit "off" though because you need to absorb the "energy" of the culture for lack of a better euphemism.

If you watch someone like Peter Barakan who's spent most of his life in Japan, you can see how his body language and subtle mannerism when communicating in Japanese give the impression of a Japanese man even though he's 100% caucasion. Someone like Matt will NEVER be like someone who has put in the social effort like that.

I've never been anti-input, but you have to break into output fairly early on for it to matter at all. Do you think the Japanese suffer from a lack of English input? Half their music and media is English with subtitles. They have English written all over the fucking place. They WANT to be good at English and think its cool. A lot of them are put into English daycares even. The problem is that their English curriculum is created by autistic Japanese following their own stupid philosophy about the "correct" type of English to be learned with little to know actually communication focus. Even worse, its usually taught by a non-native teacher who themselves cannot speak English well. Even if they are lucky enough to get a gaijin teacher, the teacher is forced to stick to the broken curriculum and grade accordingly. They have no native peers and scant native teaching methods so they are all most NGMI until SHOCKER they study abroad for like 6 months to a year and actually socialize.
